Tower was shocked that a pilot was actually willing to do this himself. That's certainly against the union contract in the U.S. We should take a lesson from the Germans on this one.
my question how is the pilot going to get out and back in the A340 w/o stairs or a bridge? just asking i am that is part of what the atc is laughing at
@4thsubaru There is an access door thru the avionics area below first class, it leads all the way out side of the aircraft just behind the nose gear. its quite small so the person climbing thru it needs to be careful.
@4thsubaru I do believe there is a way down through the flight deck into the hold and then out via the nose gear, just a guess but its a similar system to that on other aircraft :)
@4thsubaru Some airliners have a small retractable airstair hidden (unlike those of corporate aircraft) directly underneath the first door; it hardly ever used due to the availability of ground stairways, followed by terminal gateways. an A 340 might have one of those installed.
@4thsubaru and the response is simple... many aircrafts have airstairs, which you can deploy from it... used only in special cases..., you think engineers did not think about that ?
@Pa1895 you should review your atpl course or else.... I'm pilot and I can guarantee you that many a/c have airstair....aare you so retarded to think that an airline pilot would have been a mistake to ask it to atc then ? come on!
@Bugy34 neither me nor the pilot is so retarded to think that there is no way to get to the panal. outofpower is explaning how to get from the cockpit down to the tarmac. A retractable airstair on an A340 is quite inconceivable. The doors are about 6 to 7 meters obove the tarmac, so the engineering and design of retractable airstair which will have a acceptable weight seems almost impossible. You, as a pilot, should know that a increase of your DOW brings you a decrease of your payload.
@4thsubaru there is a extendable Stair in front of the nose gear. Witch is a direct access to the avionic compartment. And of course there is a direct access from the cockpit to the avionic compartment
that's how aircraft/controller radio talk should sound. the pilot's were professional, quick and respectful and the controller was doing a bad-ass job especially with that fuel door situation and the plane not being able to stay in position & hold.. You guys that fly into JFK and the tower controllers that work there, all of you have my respect.
haha i am so ashamed of that german english.. he is a fucking lufthansa A340 pilot, he must be able to speak english much more fluently and with a better accent :D but apparently you dont have to be the best english speaking guy to fly for LH
@AxCYeR well actually you have to go through a couple of tests to become a LH pilot including one english test. but they test only your grammar and vocabulary knowledge. the pronunciation isn't importent at all. I've been through that test and I can assure you it's pretty hard. Butt still you're right when you say that you don't have to be the best english SPEAKING guy. you just have to understand what's said and express yourself in a way that you can be understood, with or without accent :D
This just put a smile on my face! But I'm not laughing at the Lufthansa driver. I think his solution was perfectly practical! He saved an unnecessary, time- & fuel-consuming taxi back to the gate. And I'm only guessing here, but I'll bet he just used the emergency rope egress from the flight deck. Passengers wouldn't see him climbing out & get nervous, though they might have seen him shut the fuel door. And what would passengers on nearby planes think to see a pilot crawling out of his plane? ;)
@dcs002 Another thought: Does the A-340 have flight deck access to the baggage compartment? If so, there must be a hatch in the baggage compartment used by ground crews. I don't know why, but I think this is such a cool friggin story!
@dcs002 Below the cockpit, you can access an electric departement and from there you can get outside through the nose gear's bay. You risk some stains on your uniform but its kinda possible. Engine 3 might get turned off for this, tho. Hats off anyway how the crew handled this incident without creating a huge delay by going back to the gate and let it check by the ground crew. And hats off too to the JFK controller staff. They're always worth some clicks. Keep it up guys !
@stfn1986 Thanks for the explanation. And yeah I'm with you, hats off to the controller who recognized the unconventional, kinda funny, yet practical solution! Problem solved, and everyone's got a great story! (Guess the pilot wanted to get back to Germany more than he wanted a clean shirt!)
And much respect for all you aircrews! Guys like Capt Haynes & Capt Sully did amazing and heroic work, but I also know most of you could do the same if placed in the same situation. Hope you never have to!
@phobal: So how the hell would the pilot be able to close the fuel panel on a 340? At least 30ft from the R1 door to the ground...
JM: Some aircraft...like a 747...have access to the lower electronics bay from the main deck. Then there is a ladder that can extend out of the E&E bay to the ground.
@giandrago - It's funny because the Lufthansa is in the line of planes waiting to take off. He's right next to the runway (or near it) and the captain is gonna get out of the plane and close a fuel door. That never happens with big jets at JFK airport.
Lufthansa .. maybe he translated poorly. He means outside the pressurised compartments only. Why would he have to leave the plane to close the door ? Its on the fuselage. He will just open up the floor and descend into the cargo bay, lift another floor panel and access the refueling lines ,valves , and so on, and the door mechanism .. Electric motor has burnt out - so Wind on a handle attached that winds it up, lock it closed. Fly now, repair during turnaround time not flight itme.
In an A340, behind the Captain's seat, there is an access door that leads down into the avionics bay below that also allows for access outside of the aircraft via an attached step ladder so very well said numb.
Well this is a smart pilot!saving the company and the passengers Fuel and Dealy time!imagine if he taxied back to have maintanance take care of it!back of the line and delay time!

Reminds me of the one joke... an cop is clocking cars and all of a sudden his radar gun reads 999.99 and won't change back. The police later got a message from the RAF which explains it something along the lines of this-"We have received word from one of our pilots that his plane's automatic systems jammed an 'enemy radar station' on the ground and was prepping to auto-lock/ fire ATS missiles, but the pilot recognized the situation and stopped it manually. Good Day"
