@OxfordBlondie if a puppy is sick and/or dying the mom will eat it so it doesn't have to suffer. She does it in a way that the puppy won't feel pain. All dogs do this. But there is also a chance that your friend saw wrong and the mom wasn't attacking her puppy. Considering how dogs are really loving towards their pups I think your friend might've seen wrong. Also it depends on the size of the litter or if it was the runt

There have been many reported instances when a mother do eats their young.Sometimes the mother is lacking in nutrition so she will eat her young because she instinctively knows she is not capable of nursing and taking care of her young. She does it quckly so it won't suffer. LOOK IT UP.
