  • Huahuahua. Bono seems like Mick Jeager

  • Isn't it interesting how somebody who isn't that great of a singer can grow up to become one of the best, most influential singers in the world? Just goes to show that with ambition, passion, dedication and perseverance.... anybody can attain their goals. :-)

  • I wish I could go back 33 years and tell these boys that they are going to end up being the biggest, best band in the world! Blows me away how far they have come!

  • The song isn't that good, but the solo's amazing!

  • Its so interesting! U2 on their first performances... you can notice how Edge style is not yet defined as what we hear know and he has some traditional rock & roll influences... AMAZING!! :D

  • Comment removed

  • Edge is doing a cockrock solo!!!

  • LARRY MULLEN JR. LOOKS LIKE JUSTIN BIEBER OMG

  • jajaja bono como se motiva de hai crezeria un gran grupo!! :D

  • lol... its so funny what people thought was cool back then!

  • It's all downhill from here, lads.

  • not bad to say they only formed the band 2 years before they did this

  • larry mullen looks 14

  • That attitude, that stance, that bass playing, that hair and those glasses. He got all the girls back then, didn't he?

  • Oh c´mon this song is so cute :BBB

  • This is the first song Bono ever wrote.

  • Gosh Napoleon, put down that bass!

  • The move at 2:24 is straight out of The Brady Bunch!

  • dios q desastre como se compara eso con I will follow si que crecieron

  • Larry Loooks Great:D

  • They look nice:D

  • It's funny how much the edge wants to sound like television. great guitar solo on this one.

  • I saw a clip of this in "It Might Get Loud" & had to see the whole thing...looks like Bono Vox was learning some moves from MIck Jagger.

  • same thing here

I saw the movie and it was great! And I was so interested in this song^^

  • Woah the Rory Gallagher influence really comes out on that solo!

  • brillaint solo from the egde. bass, lead guitar drums and singer all working perfectly in conjuntion with eath other, thats what i love about u2

  • Fucking hell, I'm so glad The Edge got an Electro Harmonix Deluxe Memory Man and discovered minimalism. The Edge is and always will be my favourite guitarist though.

  • best first album would have to got o van halen.. sorry.

  • dirk diggler doing heat will rock you, with reed rothchild on guitar.

  • lol...wow, it's an actual traditional guitar solo by the Edge!

  • Thats true Edge usually plays down his guitar solo in almost all the U2 songs except this one. Probably the Fly would be second.

  • Thankyou so much for posting! Amazing. Pretty punky and glammy. Glad they developed their unique style after this, because if they stuck with this, I don't think they would have lasted too much longer!

  • yes you're right

  • This is so fun to watch: Edge has hair, Adam had the crazy blonde fro which i still want to see again, OMG Larry is smiling! and Bono....well Bono hasn't changed much, still crazy weird but I think he has managed to put a sort of cap on that lol

    Love U2 <3

  • Whoa! They are so young!!! haha

  • I think the lads did great, it's obvious they loved what they were doing. They grew by miles by the time they released their first album, a true epic.

  • Nothing bashful with a teenage U2. This video is so primitive that I love it even more!

  • Where the video has filmed?

  • the kids bacame legents... they gave hope to my band! :p

  • WATCH MORE TV

    SPREAD THE WORD

  • OMG This is insanely early . . . what is Bono doing in those trousers?! Barry Gibb wants them back . . .

  • Ha! thats funny! I love this track its my fave,my brother plays the solo, badly! But he wont tell me the tab and i can't play by ear like him, he sucko bigo time sometimes?

Whose your best member in u2? mine is Edge because my brother drilled him into me ;0

  • The Edge has a shaky leg that won't stay still! Maybe he was concealing his nerves..I bet he was wetting himself during the solo! Bless him..still by the looks of him he was still in dipers anyway!

  • oh my goodness i know its wrong..but i'm getting orgasms watching baby Edge!! Has he got a soft-bristle toothbrush in his back pocket? Baby teeth!! Ah...i'd die for him...he's soo cute!!

    Love from Ireland!!

  • best irish band ever.

  • wow! such a kids :)

    and the little edge :))

    Larry is great :)

  • Edge's and Bono's voice is very similar!

  • Haha, Larry noticed the cam:) I think he was caught by the "I-will-be-on-TV-tonight" feeling:) He was in the same age I'm in now (if he is 17 in there).

  • The Edge and Larry being the youngest, It looks like they were in their puberty fase.

  • very true!

  • that would be phase not fase! lol......yeah nonetheless what an amazing glimpse into the early early early days!

  • Ahh.. look at 01:12 when Larry tries to look cool infront of the camera but can't help himself burst into a smile! So cute!

  • these songs i never heard from U2 sounds great like do they have a cd out that shows they're really old songs like this?

  • Larry looks really bored up the back...

    Poor baby...

  • 1. I want to break into this video an hug edge. and larry, but mainly edge.

    2. Bono was trying WAY too hard back then. He still didn't have his "voice" yet.

    3. Adam looks cool, even though he couldn't even play back then. ( he and Bono really had no musical talents before this)

    4. Edge and Larry have the coolest jackets EVER. period.

  • shut the fuck up dude. they had the best first album i think any band has ever had

  • Yes, they had an epic first album.

However, the first record doesn't sound anything like this (fortunately). If it had, they would have had an epicly forgettable first album (and, perhaps, never had a second one).

It's a good thing they weren't signed and introduced to the world until 2 years later.

  • Yeah i thought that! They really matured in a short period of time! I love this early footage though! It's so life-affirming to see these vulnerable young faces develop into rock stars! cos really deep inside they are eternally children!

  • Well, that solves it. They ALWAYS sucked.

  • Your opinion doesn't matter. Just be quiete and don't insult a great band like U2.

  • U2 is great, but your comment is funny!

  • The thing is, isn't it obvious that these earnest little lads were wankers and Duran Duran were fucking awesome. Honestly.

  • Well, Duran Duran had their own thing going that was great in its own way. They certainly revolutionized the music video.

The U2 shown here was far from great, but okay for kids around 16-to-18 years old. Not everyone that age can be as good as Silverchair.

  • They were 14/15 and still in school.

  • edge is sooo cute

  • Holy crap they were like 17!

  • Chris Issac met the Clash

  • They were just babies here. Unreal how far they've come.

  • Love The Edge Solo, never hear he play this way before!

  • haha this is really cute!

cos Larry looks so small which is adorable!

    Edge and Bono are cuties

and Adam looks cool! cos he his "POWER OF THE AFRO" :)

  • larry smiled!

  • He smiles on the Elevation tour on the Boston DVD, before Desire.

  • Haha, U2 is awesome but this song completely sucks!

  • Excelente video de la primera parte de su carrera, viva!!!

  • They audtioned for this gig by playing a Ramone's song which Bono said U2 wrote, just so they could get the gig.

  • True

  • bernardo ta caladinho.leles o crl.u2 é e sempre sera a melhor banda do mundo.e agr volta la para os teus cds de tony carreira e toy

  • loool tonu carreria e toy ???? loool deixa o zé cabra e o crl LINK PARK E SAM THE KID sao os maiores ok ? beijinho bom bejinho bom

  • quantos anos tinham estes lelés ?

  • aahn, se você ainda quer saber, o bono tinha 17, o edge 16-17, o larry 16 e o adam 18.

  • Yes this is the first time U2 appeared on TV.

They were very lucky to get the gig.

  • They were wicked talented for their age in my opinion! I like their sound when they were younger than their sound today

  • agreed! and they were barely 18! I enjoy their stuff most from the beginning to about 1984..... Their other albums are great too but they really had an edge back then, pun intended, LOL

  • Edge looks so cool with his strat and his collar up! I've been a big fan of u2 for quite some time but im only discovering their earlier stuff now and to be honest i think its much better

  • omg larry looks 12

  • Damn this video came out of nowhere! Could this be the earliest video of U2 out there?

  • This guitar Solo is great-and despite all the comments on "how different they sound"-it's not at all unlike the solo from "New Years Day" - sad and echoey- Edge is a true original.

  • People-THIS IS A HIGHSCHOOL BAND!- amazing- they developed an ORIGINAL sound that was not unlike what they were to carry on thru the 80's and 90's - at such a young age! Don't say"how far they've come....etc.". You have to start somewhere! -and most at 17 years old aren't even close to this. New sounding music then and still.

  • You know...at the Grammys--2005, I believe, Franz Ferdinand won for Best New Artist..and then later U2 got up on stage to accept their Grammy(out of many), and Bono says, "a;; these great new faces out here, new sounds...Franz Ferdinand, they're gonna kill this country." I strongly believe Bono said that because they looked EXACTLY like FF back in the day(see: this vidoe), and look at them now!

  • God they were SO young...Bono and Adam 18, and Edge and Larry 17 (at the most) in 1981.

  • and this video is from 1978 it says.

  • woa its so hard to believe the same band wrote lemon or the fly orbullet in the blue sky i sware their musics never the same amazing how bonos stage acts have changed

  • I like Larry's jacket.

  • What hams they were! They've come such a long way musically. LOL, they had loads of confidence!

  • Me too, I've just been reading about this early period. Cant believe I'm now seeing it. YouTube is just mighty. The Hype, crikey they look about 12 years old.

  • For those who want the details: They were still in "High School" (the irish version, anyway) when

this was done. They managed to get themselves on

a local Dublin TV show called "Youngline", which

would was a kids/teenagers program. When they

auditioned for it, they still called themselves

"The Hype". They had just changed their name

to U2 when this show was recorded.

  • I looked this up because I'm reading the book "U2 on U2". Pretty surreal to see this after reading about

it and thinking I would only have to imagine what

it was like! I just went to U2 in Honolulu 2 weeks

ago. This is SO painful to watch. I kept waiting

for Bono to grab his buldge. Youtube is amazing. This

is like a really old photo that U2 probably hoped

was lost in a fire a long time ago =D

  • o but they did!

  • It's O.k. but these guys will never make it big.

  • larry is still using the traditional grip..

  • Did somebody financed them to be as big as they are now? lol They begin like at 16 years old.

  • great video!!!!

  • Edge is fridden amazing, even so long ago.

  • WOW! I started listening to U2 in 1982 and I don't think i've heard or seen anything from them prior to 1980. This a remarkable piece of archive! Its really a like seeing film of the Beatles perform at the Cavern for thee first time! Didn't realize they were together back then... who knew what a phenom they would be back then? NO ONE WOULD HAVE GUESSED NOT EVEN THEM!

  • Adam Clayton looks like Napoleon Dynamite!! It is an awesome song...

  • Nah, looks more like Velvet Underground-era Lou Reed!

  • This is the Greatest U2 Song EVER! It's amazing it's not on all of their greatest hit albums. Simply remarkable!

  • Back when they weren't that great. But this video shows where they were and how they've grown over 28 years. Not too many bands can make music sounding like "Street Mission" and ten years later do "All I Want Is You"

  • Never seen that. Yeah Edge guitar solo wow i never seen him play like that either. It was Dire Straits. The way Larry is holding the sticks too. Bono spoils it lol. They said they cdn't play when they started out i dont believe that

  • I believe the Edge and Larry were the only ones in the band that could play their instruments from the start.

  • OMG Wonderful! Thanks for putting this up. Larry is so cute in this video!

  • This is an awesome performance. Bono, Edge, Adam, and Larry seem very young. I think that this one of their best songs I've ever heard and it is one of my favorite U2 songs along with Sunday Bloody Sunday and With Or Without You. I wasn't that big of fan of U2 until I heard about their influence on Angels and Airwaves.

  • Nice Richard Lloyd-esque guitar break from Edge, on an otherwise bass-heavy track that would not be out of place in a high school talent contest. They came a long way between writing this and "I Will Follow", that's fer sure!

  • i read that in my book too this is great but it's packed with late 70's cheezy ness

  • larry mullin looks like he is 10 years old lol

  • Oh my God. How adorable is Larry in this video? I'm reading their book right now, it's amazing.

  • Wow its pretty incredible how they went from that to the Unforgetable fire to Joshua Tree to Zoo to Pop to where they are now...amazing

  • man, that is great i love all these old u2 clips wow cool.

  • they would have been around 18 right? thanks for putting it on, never seen it before

  • that's most classic rock solo I've ever heard the Edge play

  • before U2 got famous, or hit puberty for that matter

  • They were great even in those days !!

  • Man!!, how old are this guys?!!!

  • I have this on a bootleg i bought off ebay, great piece for any collector

  • they were better then

  • wooow! wierd but really cool!

  • Adam = Napoleon Dynamite

  • like franz ferdinand?:-Dit's too funny but I love U2 too much...:-D

  • Never seen this before and I grew up a stones throw away from Bono and Larry, amazing, where did they get this from?

  • I LOVE THEM! ahhh lol they are AWESOME

  • Wow. The Edge is so awesome... is that a straw wrapper in his back pocket? Either way, he's the most amazing guitarist. Ever.

  • this is legend!

  • This is so great to see, at least for knowing where it all began. I love The Edge's solo in this, but holy cow who told Bono he looked good in what appears to be like this all white jumpsuit? And where did he go during the solo? :D

  • I have never seen this!! I thought I'd seen it every U2 video ever. Sheesh, what were they, like 12?! Just goes to show you the best bands in the world all sucked at one time or another.

  • Coolt;D

  • they were really young and might have looked a bit weird, but their talent is noticeable, especially the Edge´s guitar solo! There´s certainly no band better than U2!!!

  • Haha what a crack up ! I saw them three times last year ! They truly are the best band in the whole world ! I can't wait till theyre next album !

  • HAHAHAHAHA they are my idols U2 is the best in the whole world. Go U2!!!

  • Im a great great U2 fan if you would like to contact me id be really cool thanx. e-mail: ebfsoto for hotmail.com

  • omg they look so dorky ^_^

  • please, can you send me this trailer to my e-mail?

  • Where did you find this???????

  • Adam sucked at Bass at this time. You can by just listening. :P LOL. How things change.

  • Correction, Adam is the oldest.

  • in 78 .... Bono is a few months short of 18, and he's the oldest in the band. I'm guessing Larry is still 16.

  • jesus christ, this must have been when they were in high school

  • Awwwww!!!! They were all so cute!!!! Back then, those little guys had no idea they would grow up to be the biggest band in the world.

  • COOL SONG

  • Wow, they were REALLY young when they did this. But how about how different their music was then. They don't have anything else like that that I can think of. Wow.

And yeah, Edge's solo was cool. He never plays like that.

  • lmao

  • can't get over adam's 'fro. it's always super funny to see it live! :D

  • This Lizzy meets David Bowie!! Oooooooooh Wham Bam Thank you Ma'am!

  • oh my god, cute boys!!!!!!!!!

bono looks like saturday night fever... =)))

  • Intresting....

    ???

  • I've never heard U2 sound this much like Thin Lizzy! That is a side of Edge I've never heard in my 24 years as a U2 fan.

  • great video... well many hair and so jounger

  • loved The Edge's solo

  • Fantastic!!!

  • that was so awesome XDDDDDDD

  • Larry is extremely cute in this video. I wanna pinch his cheeks =] And I think Bono had been watching too much Mick Jagger...

  • oh my!!!

  • They got big because they had total belief in themselves.

  • How Cool!! U2 "I boy tries hard to be a man"

  • Wowza. Watching things like this, I have no idea how they ever got big. Larry looks like he was 12, and the rest of them looked like they had absolutely no idea what they were doing. Funny stuff.

  • Do you think Edge might have refused to wear white pants?

    Smart man.

  • Hello, we're Bowie fans
