I was a pretty fair hand bonist in my younger days. I especially liked the mouth popping thing. I had never thought of that. Take care of them elbows, I have developed arthritus in my right elbow to the point of pain when trying to hand bone.
"Hand Bone Elbow" Glad to see this "art" still being practiced....
well it probably dates back even further when the African Americans had no instruments and they just did whatever to accompany their music - clap their hands, knees, stomp.. and the song Hambone is connected to vaudeville, but originally it comes from the Juba dance, which has its roots in Africa. yes, it's some very old and fundamental stuff :-)
@alicevoiceprague It should be noted that Africans have ALWAYS used their hands, feet, and the like to make music. It is still done today. Making music, rituals, and dance withe the hands and feet was not a result of simply not having instruments. It has always been done and its continuation was simply the continuation of rituals and culture for African-Americans.
But you're right, this does have its roots in Africa. My African husband was surprised to see Whites in the US doing this, now.
I might make a vid response to this. Theres something that I did called "Stepping" This vid is awesome and inspired the heck out of me.
