I have dealt with fungus on the sides of my toenails before. I just get some surgical tools and bite the bullet and cut the fungus parts out myself. It bleeds quite a bit but I have gotten rid of probably 90% of the problem & the nails grew back perfectly. I am very sanitary using only sterile tools and antiseptic fluids constantly. My toe probably would of looked like this one did if I had not intervened when I did. I have done this on every toe I have with just a couple that didn't work
@kekemuffin3 This procedure is not very bad, I am the treating doctor not the patient. Lamisil is an excellent choice for treatment as well. Best of luck.
@padeheer - Hi Dr. I have recurrent ingrown toenails on my right and left big toes. I was told about the Phenol matricectomy and wondered if it is best to do both nails at once or one at a time? What is the healing time?
I highly recommend this.......many doctors won't do it......because just like a tooth once it is gone it's no longer a revenue stream.......but think ahead people......ever watch a 60+ person and all the trouble they have trimming gnarly toenails.......both my biggies are long gone and I love it
I had really bad toenail fungus on my big toe nail to the point where the nail was lifting up from the nail bed. It also hadn't grown in a year. My podiatrist just removed it this past Tuesday. Is there a certain amount of betadine I am supposed to be putting on it? I just put some on a cottonball and squeeze it over my toe. (I haven't really been able to touch it because it is really painful to the touch!) He recommended that I take oral Lamisil for 3 months. Is that really safe?
@shelloz09 Lamisil is very safe, it has been around for a long time now. There are no more side effects with it than any other medication. I usually do not remove the nail if I am treating orally. Just use a small amount of betadine. It will be sore until the tip of your toe scabs over. Best wishes.
i have fungus on my big toe nail. what do you recomend thats very efficient and fast. i know it will not be a next day thing but i wudnt like to wait years lol ??? please reply thank you
@KandeeNation Sure, you can treat the fungus with topical or oral medications and also laser therapy. I hope this helps. I would suggest you seek a consultation with a specialist. Best wishes.
@angiepeters1 If the nail is ingrown or fungal it will not grow back normal. You must treat the condition to fully cure it. I rarely remove a toenail and let it grow back. If it is just fungal, there are several better treatment options. Best wishes.
@angiepeters1 I will treat fungal nail infections with oral or topical medications, or with laser therapy. They all have pluses and minuses. The most important thing is to make sure that is what is going on with a nail PAS stain. Then you can make an educated decision of your treatment. Best wishes.
@farris562 The nail will not grow back (95% of the time) when we use the Phenol, which is acid that burns the nail growth center. If we want to allow it to grow back, we do not use the Phenol. Best wishes.
@camerond47 This is done under a local in the office. I have had the sides of my toenails removed and it really is not a big deal. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
Most residency programs in podiatry are 2 or 3 years now, with 3 being the most common. After that, there are many options on practice type. I would suggest visiting a podiatrist in your area to get a good feel of it. Best wishes.
I am a pre med student but I am seriously considering podiatry. Seems like you doctors handle a variety of ailments and perform a vast number of procedures. You see patients of all walks of life and you specialize on one area of the body. How many years after podiatry school did it take for you to start your practice? Thank you so much for all these videos.

The toenail does not grow back 95% of the time. This is what we want. If the acid (Phenol) is not used, then it would grow back. Best wishes.
