I don't agree with some of this....I used to be one who hated to go in front of the class and write on the board even if I knew the facts or not.To force those kinds of kids to go to the board like that makes them HATE the class even more.
@rtds9fan I completely agree. When teachers put me on the spot without me raising my hand, I just shut down. It makes me not want to even try, because I don't even want to be in that class, and I just end up with a panic attack every time.
I loved Sonia Braga as Mrs. Westlake!!! What else has she done, or been up to as far as TV/Movies??? And doesn't she have a daughter who's an actress???

Personally i think Cliff and Clair ahould have been a little more understanding about how Theo felt about his math teacher coming over to the house. If Cockroach found out, he might of made fun of Theo. Kids have a way of being cruel.
What strikes me about this video is when Cliff tells Clare it's a 68 (a decent result) and she says "Oh Theo", she then is surprised that it is an 89 and is so happy with Theo. Very sad...
I wish we had teachers like this now, who actually CARE about our precious children. Such a large majority are in the WRONG field of work. Our poor children. My experiences were so bad with teachers and administration that I home school my 5 babies now. Sad! My tax dollars aren't even being used for my own children because the schools are going down, I HAD TO pull them out. The few teachers WITH integrity are being worn out. God bless them.
Malcolm was priceless in this episode. His reactions were great.
As for Mrs. Westlake, too often parents don't see the fair but hard=driving teachers are the only ones worth having. This show lasts because everyone does what they should.

This is how teachers should be displayed becasue that is how they are, now all we see our the ones who live like a nun and nerds. The media needs to show caring teachers that also have a life

I grew up during with the Huxtables!! Dr. H and Theo remind me of exactly of my Dad and my brother David! The dynamic between the two of them is truly wonderful. Sadly my brother passed away shy of his 18th b-day. (car accident) \\episodes with Theo amd Dr. H always remind me of the good ol' days.. :-)
I love the Cosby Show!!! Fantastic, but Sonia Braga is one of the most sexisit Latin women on the universe. Classy, elegant, intelligent, slender, exotic. And to top it all off I hate long hair. However, it fits her to the tee. WONDERFUL Episode.
This is a great episode. The comedy timing is great, but I think the it shows several points, not only do we get to see the reason why Mrs Westlake is tough on her students, but that there is also a lighter side to her.
I totally messed up. I bought seasons 5,6,7 on DVD... when I should have bought seasons 1,2,3 on DVD since this is quintissential TCS. It feels more like a true to life depiction of family life during the 1984-1987 seasons. This was a wonderful episode. In my opinion, Bill must've wanted something so he can interact with Malcolm a lot and also evolve the Theo character from where he was first season being happy getting low grades. Now Theo's inspired to do better. Good job!
I LOVE that concept of studying at the end with the airplane. That makes a lot of sense, I'm gonna try to think of that from now on. It seems like it will help me w whole lot. =)
This was one of my favourite episode. I wish I had a high school math teacher like her, she is so passionate about her job and her students. I agree with Claire, Theo is lucky to have her as a teacher.
I'm sorry to disappoint you, but Portuguese is my mother tongue and it was a bit hard for me to understand her, but again it was awesome to see her trying to speak my language and Claire is just great... all of the huxtables are great.
As I said on part two of this episode, Phylicia Rashad (Clair Huxtable) speaks Spanish fluently, so her Portuguese isn't that bad considering. I think it's easier for Portuguese speakers to learn Spanish than the other way round so I give her points for trying.
I just have to say that although she's a great actress... she may speak spanish, but that doesn't make her a fluent portuguese speaker. I speak portuguese since I was a baby, but I can't speak Spanish.
Some words sound alike, yaeah, they do, but they're not, e.g. If you ask for a moment in spanish, you are asking for a rat in portuguese. If you say that a woman is embarassed in portuguese, you are also saying that she is pregnant in Spanish. The spanish word for coat is the portuguese word for the male genitals, and so on.
They're completely different languages and speaking one does not mean you can speak the other.
@ViewerNextDoor yeah, Phylicia can converse and understand Spanish just fine, but she still has a thick American accent (native Spanish speaker here). I assume it's the same with her Portuguese.

Thank you for posting this episode it was always my favorate. Theo's relationship with Mrs. westlake and his view of her changes from that point on. He cames to like and respect a Teacher who was very hard on him. Later on in the season when Mrs.Westlake had her baby early and a sub took over, Theo was not happy when his class started to misbehave. He brought them back into line by telling them that this was Mrs. Westlakes class and this was not how they should behave.
It was Cockroach who wasn't happy with the students who were misbehaving when there was a subsitute. I love that episode too. Mrs. Westlake didn't deserve that.
