@yonderboogey Thank you very much! Yes, I picked up the banjo parts by ear. They are based loosely around Rob McCoury's playing in The Del McCoury band's rendition.
wow, really epic man, this is by far the best version of this song. by a long shot haha it has the soul and meaning of the orignal lyrics and the bluegrassy Badass banjo. amazing man. iv been playing mandolin for a few years and banjo for a couple weeks now, if only i knew more people who loved music
I hate when you just take up and instrument and then you watch kids like these that are at Asian level...and your just like, "yeah....I can do that..." In my case its a banjo...
I thought Del wouldn't have any competition on this song but these guys are proving me wrong. Go ahead and use Knoxville in the American Version because it fits when your playing in the US and also playing it in a traditional Bluegrass style. Alot of things change when other people play someone's song. Just don't butcher it. Stay true to the melody and lyrics. The lyrics in this song tell a great story. The story is about James, Red Molly and a 52 Vincent not Box Hill or Knoxville.
I've listened this over and over again...I cant stop....I love the harmony...and Josh your a great muscian....This is a wonderful version of this song....And Carson, my wife says you should not always where your glasses
Great stuff guys. The relaxed look is intoxicating. I,m now checking your other classics, what fun. Thanks for the old stuff. Joe (46) Edinburgh. It's funny seeing you guys being good at MY dads music. I love Lazyhand (all one word, it's a band name) too. My guitarist mate just got a banjuitar. Vincent 52 is first on the list. Hope to see you on tour or telly soon. Joe
45 years old and in 10 mins a big fan. my father plays (a bit) the banjo and makes them too (they're amazing). but the big news is that my 8 year old son is just signing up for lessons. you guys coming to portland, ME to play at all. have the best venue for you! going to itunes now to get your album. nice job!
how long have you been playing the banjo? im 15 and really want start. i have been playing guitar for about a year. im ok i guess but nothing special. Banjos are quite expensive and i just want to know how hard it is to learn?
@theoncegreatfugitive I started playing banjo about a year and a half ago with zero musical experience and I'm doing okay. Having a bit of experience on guitar you should pick it up even faster than I did.
It's hard to pick a banjo and sing at the same time. I'm impressed! You guys sound great together. I see a big future if you choose it, you've got that X-factor that's hard to find.
I'm 54 years old and in the last 30 minutes I just became your biggest fan !! I love you guys. I would love to see you guys live sometime. Is that happening soon anywhere ???? kencecilia@yahoo.com
THanks so much, glad you like our stuff! alas, it isnt happening any time soon. we are at school several hundred miles apart, but will be reunited next summer.
you can however, find our album on itunes. it is called Novelty.
Never would have thought it - the great RT's '52 VBL played as bluegrass! It works brilliantly - well done, lads! Excellent playing and super harmonies! I think you play it in Bb - may I ask how the banjo is tuned?
@200000028 Thanks - that's not a tuning that I'm familiar with - I'll try it. Have you seen RT live? If not, you must - he seems to spend most of his time over in the States these days. BTW. I'm in the UK.
@Lineman1664 Think of it as double c tuning down a step and a half. and yeah, I'd love to see him some time! I gathered you were from the UK by your use of the word "lads" haha
warren wilson is so amazing and indeed a beautiful campus, do you guys go there? the music is great by the way, i fuckin lovee the cover to don't think twice (i prefer it to bobs version) and that says a lot haha keep up guys.
Good stuff, as always! I'm learning to play the banjo, so I'm especially impressed by your arrangement for this song. Hopefully, at some point, you'll break it down for us using your newly demonstrated skills with the split screen. Keep on pickin' & grinnin'!
second comment on this and ill leave you alone . but man i have turned a bunch of people in the direction of this video . you guys are so badass . and to shooow away that bug and catch up and ride that song out without a hitch . man im just floored . my fav cover of anyone in a LONG time, signed or not
Wow, fantastic performance! You both sing great and your voices match perfectly. I hope to hear or see more of these kids in the future. Excellent video and audio quality by the way.
HOT DAMN JOSH !!! i love the shit out of your videos brother !! you guys kicked ASS !! way to go . what a toe tapper . really loved it . great job . i really you guys do some more stuff together . its always entertaining . thank YOU
You two are FINE! You play great. you sing great, and your cover of Vincent Black Lightning is a worthy tribute to Richard Thompson, perhaps the greatest singer, songwriter (not to mention guitarist) of our time. It's gratifying people your age are inspired by him. I only hope his music continues to be appreciated by generations to come. Thanks to musicians like yourselves the old boy might someday get the respect he deserves.
@thebetterhalf37 we are both at guitar/contemporary folk week as we speak. Carson does more of the contemporary folk stuff; i do more guitar. this is our fourth year coming.
