  • To Mr. Butler's Family; My utmost condolences to you. I hear this song 30 years ago, and have been searching for it ever since. I traveled to Canada searching, but was never able to find it. My daughter, finally found it for me on the internet. This is one of my most favorite songs in the world, as an Italian I consider myself to know great music when I hear it.'m purchasing the vinyl today in 2012. My compliments to you and your talented father. Sincerely, Vince Vitale

  • It has been 16 years today since my father's death. It touches me to read these wonderful comments. @janicemun53 - Did I meet you? Your name is familiar and think I might have as a young girl. Dad was born July 10, 1943. Re: "Lie to Myself", I will check my albums - I'm sure it was on a B side somewhere. Will post it if I find it. Thank you again for all of your kind words. I miss my dad every day. On his grave we wrote "Your song will play forever". It is so true!

  • wow i had to look up this as it was the first album i ever had my mom bought it for me in the early 70ts he was my grade 4 or 5 teacher

  • You will always be in my heart Marty! I miss you so much :((((You were a real sweetheart! They dont make guys like you anymore!:(((( LoveForever always your freind Attila Yves Elek, On Youtube its > attilathehunkygentleman <

  • HI this is Attila From Montreal I Went out a few times together! Do you remember me? How Are You Marty! I miss you!

  • Could you upload "Savin' It Up" ? It would be great. Thanks.

  • Hi kimmibutler1. My name is Janice Mundy and I met your father, Marty in 1983 at the Bellair Cafe. (now Sasafras) I was probably his biggest fan and I have all 3 of his albums and all the 45's I could find: Once-Loved Woman, Lie to Myself and Savin it up. I grew up in Montreal and moved to Toronto in 1982. I was saddened when I heard of his death in 1996. My mother died that same year. I never knew when his birthday was and was wondering if you could tell me?

  • Count me as another who would love to have "Lie to Myself" up here.

Kimmy: thank you so much for your contribution to this discussion. I loved your dad's music, and was shocked to hear that he's gone. I'm 46 now, and I remember "Lie to Myself" so fondly. To this day, it remains one of my all-time favorite songs.

  • I knew Marty in the early 80's. We met at a great restaurant/piano bar on Front Street in Toronto called 'Mushrooms'. He was playing there as well as the Park Plaza at Bloor and Avenue Road (and was also involved in real estate). 'Take Another Look' was a hit on the radio at the time. We used to lunch down on the waterfront at Pier 4 and drinks at Bemalmans on Bloor Street. We lost touch over the years as people often do. I often think of him.

    Thanks for posting his music.

  • I have both Savin' It Up and Lie to Myself transferred to Cd from a radio taping - quality isn't so good and would love to find this music!

  • @sirgawain2007 I'm sorry to say, I don't have "Savin' It Up" and "Lie To Myself." What radio station did you tape the songs from?

    Cheers,

    James

  • The Marty Butler song your looking for with the line, ''everyday would be so much brighter'' is the first line of the chorus, ''everyday would be so much brighter if you'd only care.''

The name of the song is. ''Lie to myself.''

I have the 45RPM record on the WAM label, released in 1977.

  • Fantastic trip back to my youth! Thanks collinsjamesl !!!

Would you happen to have "Saving It Up"? It was one of my favorites at that time.

So sad to hear of Marty's passing.

  • TommyMiddleFinger, sorry, I don't have "Saving It Up." Please let me know if you find it.

    Cheers,

    James

Love your online name, by the way...lol

  • hola collinsjamesl tendrias la cancion time de marty butler para subirla? me gustaria escucharla, gracias, cariños desde paraguay!!!

  • I've looked all over for material by Marty Butler and this is the only thing I've found so than you very much collinsjamesl for posting it.

Might you have "Every Day Would Get So Much Brighter" (is that what it's called?) because I've been looking for decades.

I also wasn't even aware that Marty Butler had died until I found out here; what a shock.

kimmybutler1 , I love your father's music. I also consider him to easily be one of the greatest musical talents in Canadian history.

  • Wilmot, I'm sorry I can't help you with "Every Day Would Would Get So Much Brighter." I'm really not aware of that song. You're not thinking of "Make My Life A Little Bit Brighter" by Chester are you?

I wish I could've had the pleasure of seeing Marty perform when he was alive.

    All the best!

    Sincerely,

    James Collins

  • Jamesl,

It's definitely not "Make My Life A Little Brighter." What I wrote could be the chorus and not the name of the actual song. I guess my decades long search will continue!

    I appreciate the reply.

  • record companies need to re release some of these precious gems. (like marty butler) the shit they call music today is horrendous. the most talented and diverse groups and artists were the 1960's and 70's, from the british invasion to bubble gum, early fm sounds, motown, am pop and acid rock to its endings in disco in 1980. YES DISCO. SOME OF IT WAS FANTASTIC, LISTEN ON A GOOD STEREO SYSTEM, you can hear every instrument, every harmony. people could sing, write, produce and play instruments. wow

  • Hi Kimmy.... God Bless for having such a gifted father, he has and still does bring smiles to millions of people with his music that lives on.

I have a question, where can I find the song Lie To Myself.... this was my favorite song when I was a teen, and I havent heard it since, I had the 45' record back then....

    Thank you

  • Thanks so much for doing this. Our family appreciates it. Let us know if you need any other information.

  • Kimmy! Thank you so much for your comments. I'm thrilled to be able share Marty's songs with the world via youtube.

I really like your father's music. Unfortunately, there wasn't much information posted on the internet. That's why I decided to post "Take Another Look" and "We Gotta Make It Together"

Sorry about the wrong year, regarding the date of Marty's death. The date was posted on a Canadian music website.

Please give my best to your family.

    Love and music,

    James xo

  • Thank you for posting this video of my dad. It makes me so happy to hear him and know other people loved his music too! Miss you Daddy!

  • @kimmybutler1 Hi, my name is Janice. I met your father, Marty, on this date (November 8) in 1983. He was my favourite singer and it was a real thrill for me to meet him. He had a wonderful voice and I miss him very much.

  • I got to know Marty through mutual piano gigs in Toronto '85 through '95. He was the real deal; writing great songs, then presenting them as stellar solo performances at the piano. Marty was forever upbeat, personable and encouraging. I still learn from him when I imagine the sound of him singing and playing, or when I recall our conversations about the music biz , and life.

  • Hotskel

    PLEASE post Lie To Myself....

I have been looking for this song for years.....PLEASE

  • I loved Marty Butler's music & I still have most of his 45's like ONCE-LOVED WOMAN, ONCE- LOVED MAN, LIE TO MYSELF, etc. I'm so glad I listened to CKLW or I never would have heard of him. R.I.P. Marty, your music lives.

  • sorry, that was "Lie to myself..."

  • collinsjamesl, if you have Marty's "Lie to me," from 1978, and can share it with us, I would be your humble servant for life. Name your price...

  • Marty Butler passed away in 1996 (not in 1995 as indicated in this video)

  • djjazzyjeffcanada, unfortunately, I could only find one reference to Marty's passing online....and that website states he died on February 10th 1995.

In fact, I was a little disappointed that there was hardly information to be found on Marty Butler at all.

  • I just wanted to share some of the great music Marty left behind. I didn't want it to get lost in the digital age.

  • Marty was a friend of mine and the last time that I saw him in person was July 1995. He passed away in February of the following year, which was 1996.
