I'd like to hear the theory, too! When I visited England, I was struck by the green all over every part of a tree, trunk and all. And the very ancient feel of some trees and of the land. Of course, the entire planet is the same age, but somehow, the very soil in the UK felt well-trodden and full of a special deep something. When I returned home to the northeast USA, the land felt very wild, huge and strange in comparison...for a few hours.
I'd love to hear his theory about the difference in leaves. You should've given him a follow-up question on that (and if you did, could we maybe get the answer? Hehe). Anyways, I like this series on different trees.
@AlanKey86 After hunters killed the Great Bear in the sky his blood splashed down and turned the leaves red. The yellow leaves get their tint from the bear's fat splashing out of the pot that it's being cooked in.
@AlanKey86 Researchers at New York's Colgate University have found evidence that the brilliant red colors of maple leaves is created by a separate processes than those in chlorophyll breakdown. Maple trees are involved in an additional metabolic expenditure to create anthocyanins. These anthocyanins, which create the visual red hues, have been found to aid in interspecific competition by stunting the growth of nearby saplings in what is known as allelopathy. (Frey & Eldridge, 2005)
@AlanKey86 Learned that in my Bio class. It's something called anthocyanin, which my how I was explained, is that it keeps the leave on longer to just give the tree more of its products before the leave falls off. I don't know beyond that point.
@AlanKey86 actually, as I understood, the theory was more about the reason why the trees there have bigger leaves, etc. But I would like to hear too, to thumbs up!
I am feeling hurt...You see I am a Canadian....I love Maples

Have you any idea why the maples in southern Ontario would get twoonie-sized black spots all over them every year?

at least blue oaks of California (quercus douglasii) have tiny leaves, but that's probably because of the difficult conditions they live in.

I don't know if I want to eat out of tree measles. Maple leaves are nice but they make the train rails slippery.
