  • "as the whiskey sweat lies like discarded armor on an unmade bed" - love that line, what a great lyricist.

  • why dont they make albums like this no more? i could listen all day its like a story bein told, that is the genius of fish 4 me, i never tire of listening to him, :)

  • not that anyone is arsed however i feel that i have a connection with proper jive and lyrics and Marillion quite clearly top the bill ..... always

  • 2:22

  • great all time band, striking guitar notes, fabulous!!

  • so many memories of hotel hobbies....... the best of times ..... the worst of times, most definitely. But the era was magic.

  • clutching at straws is Great Album .. Fantastic !!!

  • @TheYugo80 Marvelous musicians, fantastic band and probably their best album

  • Not best Album ever. But I'll put it up with Dark Side of the Moon for a twosome...

  • Best Album Ever??

  • @EgoTrascendentale clutching at straws is the name of the album you also should listen to Fugazi and especcially misplaced childhood wich are all masterpieces of music thats if you like musicians whom can sing a lyric that will put you in extasy

  • @challenger3p I Love clutching at straws and Script!!!

  • best album ever?

  • That's Astral Doors with an A--Try it, you'll like it! Recommend studio version

as live stuff is poor quality.

  • This was one of the most compelling opening songs on an album/cd for

quite awhile for me. Then I heard Astril Doors "Bride of Christ." Nevertheless,

having several years elapse till I heard it now validates my perspective.

    Fish the man!

  • Do I hear the faint scratching of vinyl rpms at the beginning? I used to have this album on vinyl, til excessive rain flooding ruined my whole vinyl collection...

  • A song like this can't be done actually.

This is the universe in just 3:40.

  • Ok ...Coming from a RUSH fan ... That's a great solo and sounds very much like the style of Alex Lifeson. Just wondering if Rush and Marillion were fans of one another

  • i love the guitarline ! one of my favourites ! i think the best two guitarlines in rock history are: comfortably numb und hotel hobbies.

  • One of my favorite song lines ever:

The tell tale tocking of the last cigarette

Marking time in the packet as the whisky sweat

Lies like discarded armour on an unmade bed

And a familiar craving is crawling in his head

  • Interesting that this is tagged under darkwave and gothic...I always thought Marillion had a very dark edge to them for a prog rock band.

  • @lcrip Yeah, I can see that, darkwave..... That's interesting, I always knew them as a Neo-prog band.

  • Interesting that this is tagged under darkwave and gothic...I always thought Marillion had a very dark edge to them for a prog rock band.

  • PELLE D'OCA......

  • what can i say just brill

  • On Keyboards Mark Kelly

  • Rothery's the best.

  • I've listened to Floyd, Genesis, Dream Theater etc. and that's the best damn guitar solo I've ever heard. Rothery= Genius.

  • One of my favorites as well. Rothery's playing on this album is unsurpassed. The last song on the album, The Last Straw, is Rothery at his most brilliant...

  • what about Rush? But yes Rothery is a genius

  • @alzico I agree with you 100%. Awesome solo. Very few solos on par with this one. Cheers.

  • @alzico y do i have to agree with you ?

shortest, bestest, most emotional guitar work there is.

  • @alzico

Rothery beats any guitarist from Genesis (although Hackett is excellent), Pink Floyd or Dream Theater. Even Alex Lifeson can't compare Rothery imo

  • @AldorleaGames Rothery's great...nice that u mention Lifeson in such esteemed company even though he seldom gets the praise he deserves...exceptional guitarist. Andrew Latimer from Camel is fucking awesome, and very like Gilmour/Rothery, but perhaps even more emotive, check him out.

  • @alzico I TOTALLY AGREE!!!

  • @alzico - nah Floyd is still the best band... in all categories

    FLOYD IS MUSIC

  • @alzico well in ;)

  • @alzico boss aint it ;D
