Getting good performance from a computer is all about the environment you operate it in. My IBM Stinkpad T42 for example is not giving me any more problems now - since I lost my temper with it, threw it on the floor several times and it's now in the environment that it's best suited to - it's in the dustbin.
@joc69uk32 Thanx for responding - especially when my comment was so negative about the IBM Thinkpad. I must have read your mind because I've installed Suse (Linux) & it runs well. However, I still don't like the bounciness of the keyboard keys. Many of us men are clumsy when typing, & bouncy keys don't help. The browser back button on IBM's is great for browsing but 3 times I've lost half-written e mails through accidentally hitting the back button while typing. I've lost around 4 hours work.
@joc69uk32 That's interesting as I saw a review of a modern Lenovo & thought "Are my eyes deceiving me or are those keys very different?!!" My reason for going for an IBM was that they'll boot a system through a USB socket. Being a non-technical person I cannot fix file errors so I simply ditch a system & re-install it! - & I'm aware that DVD players can (& do) fail. Strangely, I originally ordered a Toshiba (which looked very old) but changed the order to an IBM. Did I make the right decision!!
@joc69uk32 Nah, even linux is as slow as a slug on my T42. I had an X41 before this (just for 2 weeks) & although the screen was too small it went like the clappers. I have an axe to grind with Open suse who seem to think people are psychic!! How the hell do you access software?!! I understand the principle of repositories but hell, this YAST package management system is a pain in the ass. If Synaptic can get it right why can't YAST? It really is crap.
MORE: I've read all the "how to" passages on the suse forum & all "how to's" on the net & still I haven't got a clue how to get programs onto my suse. When we're on the verge of solving all the mysteries of the world suse remains unsolved. Who makes suse & is he of sane mind? The developers have the nerve to call suse "user-friendly" no doubt it's user-friendly as long as you look at it but don't actually use it! Where's synaaptic - it's built fror humans? Yast is built for aliens.
@joc69uk32 Hi again, I'm feeling happier now that I've ditched Suse 11.2 & after installing Suse 11.3 discovered that 11.2 was faulty. I've managed to do it now. Yes tried Kubuntu but I didn't like it. I also strongly suspect that Ubuntu is a Microsoft hijacking of Linux.(a south african multi-millionaire wants to give something back to the community?!! Oh yeah, sure, & pigs can fly lol. The 5 flavours of PCLINUXOS are very user-friendly (I love 'em) but my laptop doesn't!
@joc69uk32 My piece of crap's done it again, completely obliterated yet one more another e mail through typing fast. It is just one step away from getting a sledgehammer through it - which would give me a whole lot of personal satisfaction. Sorry but I agree with you that the IBM T42 is ace. I've had it with this piece of shit I'm off to buy a Compaq or a Sony. I'll never buy IBM ever again (Lenovo). It's no wonder they sold this part of the company! Stail old IBM!!
@joc69uk32 Thanx for repying. This T42 has the standard 1.7 processor yet is so slow when compared to the Thinkpad X41 I has before this which had a very resposive 1.6 processor - nothing slowed it down whereas on this T42 you only need 2 programs open, to bring it to an almost standstill. This has 1 gig of RAM & I'm running Open Suse 11.3.
Nice Video How Come Its running windows 95 its origanal operating system is xp professianal and how come your account name in jesus I Am watching this on the same computer
God this is so irritating to listen to. I'm sorry dude, but the way you speak with the lags and spaces of time and useless stuff just really gets irritatating to the point of wanting to just shut it off. I'm sorry, I know your trying to help, but jeez, this video just gets under the skin.
T42p would not have xga screen resolution, the strength of a thinkpad lie in the fact in the workmanship, toughness and easy serviceablility, try to take apart a hp or dell and then compare it with a thinkpad.

I've just tried 2 IBM thinkpads over a 6 week period. The best place for IBM laptops as far as I can see, is on scrapheaps. They're shit.
getjiggy211 2 months ago
@getjiggy211 you need to run linux on thinkpads, then you will notice the difference
