  • I will never get sick of this song!!

  • So what did Mao think of all this?

  • @MrGutley He implemented it as the National Anthem

  • John Sayers engineered the track in 1969 on a Scully 8 track.

  • Another song Molly was involved in, hang in there Molly ...

  • Thinking of Molly :( Hope he pulls through.

  • Yes I came here cos of Molly too. Our thoughts and prayers are with you tonight Molly

  • I came here cause Molly is in Critical condition .Get well soon ,Molly

  • gay as aids

  • I was stationed in Can Tho S. Vietnam in 1969 when I first heard this song on the radio. I have not heard this song in some 42 years and it 's simply amazing and wonderful to relive those memories. Another song I've been able to hear on the internet is called Hayride, by the Flying Circus, an Aussy band and I first heard this song on the radio while on R&R in Sydney in 1969.

  • @Mr16175 Thank you ....

  • Soul.

  • Grew up with all this awesome stuff and have my 25 addicted to it also, what an unreal era for music in Australia!

  • Still a fucking awesome song.

  • one of my earliest memories in terms of music

  • An awesome song, pitty some people think today's music is shit. Maybe they don't look hard enough. There are plenty off great musicians out there today. Is having a Narrow point of view a Medical condition or just someones poor choice.

  • just love the 60's,would never change them, the best childhood .sixties in Sydney .

  • Really kicks in at a 1:45.

  • Compared to the rest of the music of the 60's. this isn't that great. Compared to todays shit? Masterpiece.

  • @TheReas93 Well put, TheReas93!!!

  • @TheReas93 Hmmm! - This topped OZ charts for many weeks and topped in two US cities. Recognised by APRA as one of the top 30 All Time All Australian tunes.

But we agree on the comparison to current day music.

  • cool

  • Aussie classic rock! Can it get any better?

  • The only good thing Molly Meldrum ever did.

  • Faith No More did it better.

  • 6 people want the fake thing.

  • Good meories

  • love 70's music

  • This song is the best song in the whole wide world!

  • has anyone noticed the reesmblance - Russel Morris & Julia Gillard?

  • @charcoalbirdy Not really, unlike Julia, people actually want to hear Russell Morris

  • Woah, is that what he looked like with hair?!?!

  • 6 people haven't seen the real thing.

  • 6 people haven't seen the real thing. What is it anyway?

  • @AdmiralofU2

The real thing is Lucifer, the light bearer. He will set you free.

  • @AdmiralofU2

    A Coke ad.

  • I'm from the latest generation but I can't find myself to ignore this great music I really should of been born during this era

  • that car ad :D

  • I saw an documentary that was done on him awhile back, and some of his fans, would show up at his grandma's house and she would feed them, and show his baby photo.:)Innocent days.

  • @laurel614

    lol.

  • Cotton, Keyes and Morris will be playing at the Centenary Rocks! Festival. Rocks Riverside Park, Brisbane, Australia. 23 and 24 July 2011.

  • Anyone else think this song blows past every other record released in the past 30 years? I miss when music was good.

  • I was 10 years old when I first heard saw this song on "black & White" tv and I loved it then and now even more. Russell Morris, you are an Australian treasure!! Memories of a long gone Australia, how sad.

  • @ptripidakis I am jelouse of you and my dad who grew up listening to this stuff! Imagine having to put up with the garbage on the radio every day!

  • i was the real thingin a small country town loved it

  • he dude your mum is right mate,it was a good time the 60s and 70s for music, and if your into it then your ok in my books and a good kid with class and style.

in 1969 the yoy yo craze was alive, surfer sam skateboards the rage in Sydney, chicks walking arround everywhere everyday, red wooden phone boxes on every corner that took 5,10 and 20 cents, 2 bob= 20 cents, model gas airplanes in parks, sling shots, sliug guns over the counter and the best time and era ever for music, cheer,s mate, you rock..

  • Still staggering after all these years...and Russel was the perfect face and voice for the song.

  • New Australian National Anthem?

  • someone is going to remix this and release it and it will go to no.1. I guarantee it.

  • grates song ever

  • OMG i was born at least 45 years too late

  • molly is a genius!

  • I love this song. Shame it doesn't go on for the full 6 minutes and 20 seconds as it does on his cd Retrospective.

  • classic

  • Russell Morris, great singer, had to learn Karate as he kept being attacked for looking a bit of a sissy. His words to Molly Meldrum on Countdown.

Shame that a lot more of our singers didn't make world standards in those days.

    Sooooo many good ones.

  • Would this be the beginnings of Indie Rock in Australia?

  • I was very ill with pneumonia at the age of 12 , when i discovered RM on Radio Hauraki. 'Sweet Sweet Love' did it for me, then I found this. WOW. I have his greatest hits on vinyl, and it gets an airing at my thrice yearly vinyl fair.

  • Yes, a classic from Russell Morris, love everything about this nugget, nice sounding bass intro, goes on a nice trip later on too...

  • my all-tie fave song

  • man i wish i was alive in the 60s :(

  • @boggy32 I wish this was 60's right now.

Don't wish you were from the sixties ages ago because if you do, you would be very old.

  • @xBlackxOpsxIsxAwsum I "resemble" that remark!!

  • @boggy32 you may HAVE been alive, you could've been an itch in your dads pants for a couple decades, you never know

  • You're a legend nzoz

  • Hey guys, did they write this song? Is this the original? I honestly can't understand why it's not more popular??? Has someone recent covered this?

  • @JoelsTunes Yes, Kylie Minogue covered this relatively recently. Doesn't compare to this though, IMHO.

  • @cyjon007 Oh bummer, Kyle Minogue wasn't exactly what I was hoping for haha. I'm going to get famous and cover this song and get lots of women. Peace.

  • @JoelsTunes Win

  • @JoelsTunes . Not sure if he wrote this - it may have been a bloke called Johnny Young but if not it would have been Russell. Amazing production - huge hit. Has ben covered by Midnight Oil , Kylie Minogue and a band from Melbourne did it as well. Few difff mixes issued since 69 also but original is probably the best. PS Check his other stuff- paper Walls part THREE is the end of it.

  • legendary song . .pity is the shortened version.

  • why so quiet?

  • its unfortunate that my generation missed out on this music!! today's stuff is just crap compared to this!!

  • @Yumsie117 I totally agree with you -60's 'Revolution'; -was the bomb... It Really was the start of the spiritual revolution...

  • @Yumsie117 i must agree

  • @Yumsie117 You just need to know where to look

  • @Yumsie117 are u kidding me finally some one notices!! high five brother. no one notices that the older music is way better. im 14, i was born in 1996 and mum always says i was born 10 years too late for the music i listen to.

  • @alienkilla22 I know man. we missed the all the good stuff. (Beatles, Pink Floyd, The Who etc)

  • @Yumsie117

What's wrong with 50 cent 'window shopper'?? Get the 50 dollar bill ya'll?

(I am being sarcastic, I am as sickened as you are).

  • @Yumsie117 you cant have missed out on it if you commented on this video

  • @Yumsie117

It was a written-to-order pop hit, made to prove Australian production values were equal to any, and it totally did that. As a jr teenager of the right demographic in the day, I can say our reaction was (1) it sounds like an OVERSEAS song - highest possible accolade! And (2) he's really cute :)

I still kinda like it, but I wouldn't be playing it on a daily basis.

  • @Yumsie117 feel sorry for ya mate..saw russell at triggs beach in perth in 1972..was talkin to him last year..that day at triggs beach he met his now wife ...oh yeh..they were great years..daddy cool..stevie wright....i could go on forever

  • @Yumsie117 what do you mean missed out? All the fucking amazing music is right here on YouTube.

  • Excellent. Thanks for uncovering all these lost treasures!

  • The Dish.

  • you would all of found yourselves singing the song 40 second in

  • oh god this song is so fuckin' GREAT

  • i asked Russell Morris over a beer what were they were trying to do when they recorded the real thing , we know molly produced it and Johnny young Wrote it originally for Ronnie Burns but Russell said they were trying to trying to get a cross between Strawberry Fields , Hurdy Gurdyman and Itchycoo Park as far as I am concerned it is the best song by an Australian Artist ever

  • @enrisrestaurant Man you are so right! I hope to write music like this one day :)

  • "theres a meaning there but the meaning there doesn't really mean a thing, come and see the real thing come and see"

these lyrics were very confusing to a nine year old.I think I got it now!

Thanks for the post. A true OZ classic

Cut & paste I know, but so true. Thanks for posting this clip nzoz1960s

  • i seen russel in concert and he was saying that when this song came out they were just putting a man on the moon and that he was very dissapointed that they didnt ask him to go as well as he had more out of space experience than the astronauts.

  • RaaaaaaaaAAAAGE! Good Ol Rage :D. I'd be a very boring person if it wasn't for Rage. Late night Rage is the best. Love Russell Morris.

  • this always reminded me of dope back then - I am sure some of these guys were doing just that .... I am the walrus - do you hear that in this song too?

  • @OnceAJumbuck yeah

  • I remember this song, the year the US landed on the moon. All the kids at school sang this song in unison. Were you there?

  • @FandangleProductions haha school as well, seems like yestereday! Getin old, gotta have my bonox & head off to bed. LOL

  • The movie The Dish brought me to this song. Amazing movie. Just like the song's amazing.

  • I think Wolfmother ripped this song off with 'mind's eye'

  • the chorus sounds suspiciously like the trashmen- Surfin bird from 1963

  • YU GOTA GET OUT OF IT B 4 U GET IN 2 IT BECAUSE IF YU DO GET OUT OF IT B 4 YOU GET IN TO IT HOW THE FUCK YU GUNNA GET IN 2 IT UNLESS YU OUT OV IT

  • i wish i had a double string guitar so i could learn it :P

  • Apparently they recorded this song and took it to the record company. The record company hated it. Then they found out how much it cost to produce and decided to release it in the faint hope that it would recoup some of the money spent on the production. Just as well they did! - Peter Morris - no relation.

  • yeah loud and louder..........

  • adore

  • absolutely legendary.

  • Exellent song when your trippin' man.

  • @veteran2000 when you what?

  • Russell stood out from the rest because he could/can really sing....

  • Classic Aussie rock.................

  • I have found an old favourite that I love and a time when New Zealand had the third highest standard of living in the world, when you wanted a job you got one and when a pound of butter cost two bob (20 cents) and we all drove flat head V8's and petrol was 3/3d an imperial gallon (33 cents) and a dollar was worth 2/6d (25 cents).

    Russell you entertained us.

  • @wepu67 and you still drive the same flat head v8s haha

  • @roxorian The old flat head ford merc V8's and flat head straight 8 Buicks (engines bigger than pool tables) go anywhere in top gear, and cheap to run at 3/6d gallon of gas....although I did own a Chev Coupe with overhead push rod 6 for a while and that was while listening to Russel Morris on 12volt valve radio.

  • @wepu67 Thats how i remember it

  • Wow thanks for this, really brings back great memories the Uptight show.

My girlfriend used to date Russell in the 70's. He was so under-rated and deserved much more recognition. I remember that Molly Meldrum had something to do with this song, either he wrote it or produced it, but I remember him making a big deal of it back then on the show, and it premiered to a huge amount of fan-fare.

Cant understand why this didnt make it overseas.

  • @topaz567

Produced by Molly Meldrum and Johnny Young (from Young Talent Time)

  • @joessnow Yes Johnny wrote it and according to legend Molly banged on Russels door @ 3 am demanding he record it.

  • @topaz567 Russell and Molly go back a long way and they still have a lot in common. For instance they both love to wear hats

  • Fantastic, this record should have been a World wide smash hit for weeks on end, the best thing from the1960's Australian music scene, thanks for posting this great video!

  • I oke up to this song this morning, love the synths at the end =))))

  • Didn`t Molly Meldrum produce this ?

  • @owling9 Yep, Molly's production, written by Johnny Young (Young Talent Time)

  • @Breatherable Wow... didn`t know Johhny Young wrote it. He had some big hits in his day, too. Thanx for posting this clip; little trip down Memory Lane for me. Have a good one.

  • i really dig this. Awesome song.

  • this song is so fucking loose

  • great Australian song, probably even in the top ten best Australian songs ever

  • This song is amazing. Reminds me of my childhood. My Dad used to play the 'Trax - Australian Made' album ALLLLL the time and this song was on it. Along with loads of other awesome Aussie songs.

  • When I was a kid and hearing this song, (it being so cool ) I had always assumed it was American but as I got older, I became aware that this and most other cool songs where actually Australian. Fuck the "Cultural Cringe", we don't need it.

  • Comparing the lyrics to the actual film clip, what does it mean? Can the lyrics be applied to any discourse and thus can be accompanied by any film clip?

Couldn't find any explanations anywhereeee, give me your thoughts?

  • Light years ahead of his time, fantastic song

  • great song

  • How the shit have five people not liked this? Get your heads checked.

  • On a DVD I have, the filmclip of this song was of Hitler and it had all these dying kids and stuff and at the start a rocket goes off.

  • Late 60's. Hot Hit! heard so many people talkin' bout real thing?

  • This takes me back to listening to the New Zealand top 20 in the halcyon days of my early teens. I thought at the time Russell Morris had 'something' and whatever that 'something' was lifted him above all others (The first single I bought was by Russell Morris.)

Now some forty years later (with a degree in music) listening to this, and other of Russell's songs, I am transported back to the sweet days of my youth - music and memory. oh how I long for those days of yore

    My instincts were spot on.

  • Damn! This is AWESOME!

  • One of the best songs of the time. No-one could have sung this one better or looked the part!

  • classic !!

  • Fantastic Aussie rock

  • flash-back to the great 60s music. Wouldn't have missed it for quids

  • Marvelous.

  • realistically, this was 'one hit wonder' ... russell morris at his prime!

    ... but that's ok; right>?

  • Russell has a mind of a genius!! Way ahead of its time!!!

  • On repeat. Can't stop. Help. This song mellows me out like nothing else. Makes me wanna grab a drink and lie down somewhere comfy.

  • This song was on the jukebox at our cafe in Devonport, Tasmania. I used to close my eyes, swaying and singing and wonder what the hell it was about. Sounds great now as it did then. The real deal.

  • @Jazna1 I can relate to that...Brighton, Melbourne; listening to this song on the jukebox in town at a cafe where each group of seats had a mini jukebox on the wall; we would drop in there before heading off for a footy match somewhere. Memories :)

  • I will never get over the complexity of this song...it was fantastic back then and is still rocking on. Thanks Russell; it has given me some very fine memories of a someone turbulent era.

  • i remember watching "go-set" and "happening 70" in melbourne when I was a young 'un.

    thank you all soooooo much!

  • ian 'molly' meldrum who basically owns this song could have been a 'prick' had he chosen to ... (years ago) and copyrighted the fuck out of this song song so it was as 'unattainable-as' ... like many songs of this genre.

thanx ian. incase anyone hasn't said so lately. hey, did u hear about 'tut'? go figure!

  • Bit of trivia for you. Ian Molly Meldrum produced the song which was written by Johnny Young of young talent time fame.

  • the moon landing theme from july 1969! it's great auz Oi Oi Oi rock! it is also a footy anthem from 1969. in that thunderclap newman time! 1969 what a great year!

  • whats the dish got to do with this song?

  • The song was released at the same time as the moon landing, which the Dish is based on.

  • This is my favourite song of all time.

  • This song is absolutely a masterpiece!

  • Love this song and recently found an Midnight Oil version (very cool). Ended up using it for my video Reds Shed.

    Cheers

    The Perfect Corner

  • One of my favourite songs of all time!

  • Love this song, it sounds so esoteric.

  • when this song came out it was really amazing, no body thought about the meaning or the of the ending etc, it was just amazing coz of the mind set of the gen etc, russel was unquestionably cool. life was much simpler...so glad my kids discovered the dish-

  • never watched the dish i want too see it since im intrested in the nasa and its programs mainly the Apollo program and the constellation program

  • such a great song timeless

  • REMINDS YOU OF OUR CREATOR'S GOOD WORK FOR US.

    Joy.

  • all i have to say is "the dish"

  • TOP SONG THANKS FOR UPLOAD!!

  • An iconic Aussie song from 1969. Written by Johnny Young, produced by "Molly" Meldrum and of course sung brilliantly by Russell Morris. Those guys should each have got Orders of Australia for this fantastic song (full version is over 6 mins - this should never be clipped but better than nothing).

  • Russell morris is cool and who ever dosent like him thats ok.

  • 1969??? WOWWOWWOW.. This is WAY ahead of its time. It's currently used in TV commercials for Tourism Western Australia, and it sounds like it was written YESTERDAY. I had NO IDEA.

  • This clip's slightly truncated. Ended with nazi youth singing Seig Heil! then nuclear explosion. I think it was a comment on the growth of dumb consumerism and militarism. "There's a many there...but it doesn't mean a thing." Shut up and shop.

  • weirdo

  • @hsd628 how is this ahead of its time the chorus is ooo mow mow mow mow

  • @hsd628 Also used in Tourism QLD recently

  • @hsd628 i disagree and am confused as to why this has so many thumbs up. This is pure 60's psychedelic.. if anything with its time, sounds nothing like it was written yesterday?
