I was stationed in Can Tho S. Vietnam in 1969 when I first heard this song on the radio. I have not heard this song in some 42 years and it 's simply amazing and wonderful to relive those memories. Another song I've been able to hear on the internet is called Hayride, by the Flying Circus, an Aussy band and I first heard this song on the radio while on R&R in Sydney in 1969.
An awesome song, pitty some people think today's music is shit. Maybe they don't look hard enough. There are plenty off great musicians out there today. Is having a Narrow point of view a Medical condition or just someones poor choice.
@TheReas93 Hmmm! - This topped OZ charts for many weeks and topped in two US cities. Recognised by APRA as one of the top 30 All Time All Australian tunes.

he dude your mum is right mate,it was a good time the 60s and 70s for music, and if your into it then your ok in my books and a good kid with class and style.
in 1969 the yoy yo craze was alive, surfer sam skateboards the rage in Sydney, chicks walking arround everywhere everyday, red wooden phone boxes on every corner that took 5,10 and 20 cents, 2 bob= 20 cents, model gas airplanes in parks, sling shots, sliug guns over the counter and the best time and era ever for music, cheer,s mate, you rock..
I was very ill with pneumonia at the age of 12 , when i discovered RM on Radio Hauraki. 'Sweet Sweet Love' did it for me, then I found this. WOW. I have his greatest hits on vinyl, and it gets an airing at my thrice yearly vinyl fair.
@cyjon007 Oh bummer, Kyle Minogue wasn't exactly what I was hoping for haha. I'm going to get famous and cover this song and get lots of women. Peace.

i asked Russell Morris over a beer what were they were trying to do when they recorded the real thing , we know molly produced it and Johnny young Wrote it originally for Ronnie Burns but Russell said they were trying to trying to get a cross between Strawberry Fields , Hurdy Gurdyman and Itchycoo Park as far as I am concerned it is the best song by an Australian Artist ever
i seen russel in concert and he was saying that when this song came out they were just putting a man on the moon and that he was very dissapointed that they didnt ask him to go as well as he had more out of space experience than the astronauts.
this always reminded me of dope back then - I am sure some of these guys were doing just that .... I am the walrus - do you hear that in this song too?
Apparently they recorded this song and took it to the record company. The record company hated it. Then they found out how much it cost to produce and decided to release it in the faint hope that it would recoup some of the money spent on the production. Just as well they did! - Peter Morris - no relation.
I have found an old favourite that I love and a time when New Zealand had the third highest standard of living in the world, when you wanted a job you got one and when a pound of butter cost two bob (20 cents) and we all drove flat head V8's and petrol was 3/3d an imperial gallon (33 cents) and a dollar was worth 2/6d (25 cents).
@roxorian The old flat head ford merc V8's and flat head straight 8 Buicks (engines bigger than pool tables) go anywhere in top gear, and cheap to run at 3/6d gallon of gas....although I did own a Chev Coupe with overhead push rod 6 for a while and that was while listening to Russel Morris on 12volt valve radio.
Wow thanks for this, really brings back great memories the Uptight show.
My girlfriend used to date Russell in the 70's. He was so under-rated and deserved much more recognition. I remember that Molly Meldrum had something to do with this song, either he wrote it or produced it, but I remember him making a big deal of it back then on the show, and it premiered to a huge amount of fan-fare.
Fantastic, this record should have been a World wide smash hit for weeks on end, the best thing from the1960's Australian music scene, thanks for posting this great video!
@Breatherable Wow... didn`t know Johhny Young wrote it. He had some big hits in his day, too. Thanx for posting this clip; little trip down Memory Lane for me. Have a good one.
This song is amazing. Reminds me of my childhood. My Dad used to play the 'Trax - Australian Made' album ALLLLL the time and this song was on it. Along with loads of other awesome Aussie songs.
When I was a kid and hearing this song, (it being so cool ) I had always assumed it was American but as I got older, I became aware that this and most other cool songs where actually Australian. Fuck the "Cultural Cringe", we don't need it.
Comparing the lyrics to the actual film clip, what does it mean? Can the lyrics be applied to any discourse and thus can be accompanied by any film clip?
Couldn't find any explanations anywhereeee, give me your thoughts?
This takes me back to listening to the New Zealand top 20 in the halcyon days of my early teens. I thought at the time Russell Morris had 'something' and whatever that 'something' was lifted him above all others (The first single I bought was by Russell Morris.)
Now some forty years later (with a degree in music) listening to this, and other of Russell's songs, I am transported back to the sweet days of my youth - music and memory. oh how I long for those days of yore
This song was on the jukebox at our cafe in Devonport, Tasmania. I used to close my eyes, swaying and singing and wonder what the hell it was about. Sounds great now as it did then. The real deal.
@Jazna1 I can relate to that...Brighton, Melbourne; listening to this song on the jukebox in town at a cafe where each group of seats had a mini jukebox on the wall; we would drop in there before heading off for a footy match somewhere. Memories :)
I will never get over the complexity of this song...it was fantastic back then and is still rocking on. Thanks Russell; it has given me some very fine memories of a someone turbulent era.
ian 'molly' meldrum who basically owns this song could have been a 'prick' had he chosen to ... (years ago) and copyrighted the fuck out of this song song so it was as 'unattainable-as' ... like many songs of this genre.
thanx ian. incase anyone hasn't said so lately. hey, did u hear about 'tut'? go figure!
the moon landing theme from july 1969! it's great auz Oi Oi Oi rock! it is also a footy anthem from 1969. in that thunderclap newman time! 1969 what a great year!
when this song came out it was really amazing, no body thought about the meaning or the of the ending etc, it was just amazing coz of the mind set of the gen etc, russel was unquestionably cool. life was much simpler...so glad my kids discovered the dish-
An iconic Aussie song from 1969. Written by Johnny Young, produced by "Molly" Meldrum and of course sung brilliantly by Russell Morris. Those guys should each have got Orders of Australia for this fantastic song (full version is over 6 mins - this should never be clipped but better than nothing).
1969??? WOWWOWWOW.. This is WAY ahead of its time. It's currently used in TV commercials for Tourism Western Australia, and it sounds like it was written YESTERDAY. I had NO IDEA.
This clip's slightly truncated. Ended with nazi youth singing Seig Heil! then nuclear explosion. I think it was a comment on the growth of dumb consumerism and militarism. "There's a many there...but it doesn't mean a thing." Shut up and shop.
@hsd628 i disagree and am confused as to why this has so many thumbs up. This is pure 60's psychedelic.. if anything with its time, sounds nothing like it was written yesterday?
I am 14 and I love this song!

(years ago) and copyrighted the fuck out of this song song so it was as 'unattainable-as' ... like many songs of this genre.
thanx ian. incase anyone hasn't said so lately. hey, did u hear about 'tut'? go figure!

Bit of trivia for you. Ian Molly Meldrum produced the song which was written by Johnny Young of young talent time fame.

when this song came out it was really amazing, no body thought about the meaning or the of the ending etc, it was just amazing coz of the mind set of the gen etc, russel was unquestionably cool. life was much simpler...so glad my kids discovered the dish-

Russell morris is cool and who ever dosent like him thats ok.
