The same thing happened to Jacki Evancho on America's Got Talent (her first audition) That's my theory of what happened to James. He was just way to good.

This was probably the best performance on all history of american idols (I didn't watch every single one, but this is definetely the best i did ). I think this guy lost just because of that. The following performances didn't match with this one, he should've either reserved You Got Another Thing Coming to the end or continued taking metal classics to sing along the competition.

He lost because there was a huge majority voting for country music. (Texas, Alabama) I do like country music as well but I feel Scotty didn't live up to James or Haley. From the beginning I wanted Casey Haley and James top 3. I don't feel Lauren deserved to be where she was but I will admit Scotty deserved to be there.

@GunwallsJoBailey They have to cut each song down to 2 minutes, no time for solos. The tone was awful, because this was during top 24 week. They don't go for good quality until the top 13.

When Scotty & Lauren somehow recieved more votes than James, it became obvious that we were going to have an all-country finale. Haley couldn't save us from feeling the wrath of the teenyboppers all by herself. Man, a James v. Haley finale would've been kickass! But, instead we got the Hoedown Showdown.
The metal heads who say "James Durbin isn't real, James Durbin is nothing like real metal!" are hypocrites. They are the same people who are begging rock and metal to become popular once again. @dahrb .....this is YEARS of sound engineering talking... unless a person goes back to some pre-mid 80s equipment for their production/live performance, get used to it. Vocals can come through much brighter than in days of old. The guy's voice is amazing. I'm just glad to hear someone with the upper range that can consistently keep the notes in proper pitch.
The GNR contrast doesn't work boss. Mainstream was pop & ROCK in '87. It's not that way anymore. Most kids listen to club dance crud.

@dahrb I respect you do not like James, we all have different views of Hard Rock/Metal. I grew up in the 80's and to me James has a Hard Rock vocals. As for "Appetite" given modern sales, your right he will not match that Album Sales. It sold over 20 million and only a few have done over 20 million (15 or so) when the album was out (First Year to 18 Months). Given this 99% of all Albums DID NOT sell like that and is just about impossible NOW! No One will given sales history NOW!

The point i failed to make originally was that people say james durbin in this time is a breath of fresh air in a pop laden world but you can find the classic bands from the era he covers going strong and there are loads of excellent newer rock/metal bands with way better voices and can write their own music at least e.g. black stone cherry ,shinedown, alter bridge and black country communion

It's a narcissistic issue of "who's better" ALL the time, and it's this weird sense of fan control... perhaps because metal has historically drawn more individual musicians than most other non-mainstream genres. Go to a metal concert, and chances are, 30%+ of those in attendance are musicians. Weird crowd...

Bands like Meshuggah, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Veil of Maya, Animals as Leaders, Periphery, Opeth, Between the Buried and Me, and many more. are some of the most important metal bands of this generation and the future of the genre. A7X is a solid band, but provides nothing new!

@Dabanskiboo Around the top 5 or so, James and Haley were saving the show from becoming complete horse dung. When Scotty & Lauren somehow recieved more votes than James, it became obvious that we were going to have an all-country finale. Haley couldn't save us from feeling the wrath of the teenyboppers all by herself. Man, a James v. Haley finale would've been kickass! But, instead we got the Hoedown Showdown.

The metal heads who say "James Durbin isn't real, James Durbin is nothing like real metal!" are hypocrites. They are the same people who are begging rock and metal to become popular once again. And when a really good rocker like James comes around, and everyone starts supporting him, all these "metalheads" turn into massive hipsters, saying "It was way better in the old days." The only reason these guys don't support him is because they do NOT want rock to be popular, they just want to complain.

@Iason100 I would love metal and rock to be popular. James Durbin though is NOT REAL METAL for crying out loud. He is a man who entered american idol to do covers. I would not believe that zakk wylde or judas priest would want him spearheading a new wave of popular rock/metal with his shitty non metal voice. Compared to the great Dio and Plant who he covers he is a piece of crap. If he decided to write his own album than I doubt severely it would be rated as highly as appetite for destruction.

@dahrb .....this is YEARS of sound engineering talking... unless a person goes back to some pre-mid 80s equipment for their production/live performance, get used to it. Vocals can come through much brighter than in days of old. The guy's voice is amazing. I'm just glad to hear someone with the upper range that can consistently keep the notes in proper pitch.
The GNR contrast doesn't work boss. Mainstream was pop & ROCK in '87. It's not that way anymore. Most kids listen to club dance crud.

I would say Axl's best performance was on the Use Your Illusions albums by far. Durbin's a breath of fresh air in the era post-Korn, Limp Dicksit, marilyn manson, and every other wave of non-sense that road in on that late 90s pseudo-metal horse.

@quentedlin the thing is i wasn't comparing him to GNR i was just trying to make the point (at first badly i admit) that this guy is nothing compared to the people he covers and will never be a legend like Halford or Dio or Hagar and that people should listen to the classic originals instead of one covered by james durbin who has a frankly bad voice and how is he a breath of fresh air there are many bands from the era he covers still going e.g Magnum's album the visitation released this year

@dahrb I respect you do not like James, we all have different views of Hard Rock/Metal. I grew up in the 80's and to me James has a Hard Rock vocals. As for "Appetite" given modern sales, your right he will not match that Album Sales. It sold over 20 million and only a few have done over 20 million (15 or so) when the album was out (First Year to 18 Months). Given this 99% of all Albums DID NOT sell like that and is just about impossible NOW! No One will given sales history NOW!

@ross121670 yeah i agree no one since some usher album in 2004 has sold over 20 million. The point i failed to make originally was that people say james durbin in this time is a breath of fresh air in a pop laden world but you can find the classic bands from the era he covers going strong and there are loads of excellent newer rock/metal bands with way better voices and can write their own music at least e.g. black stone cherry ,shinedown, alter bridge and black country communion

@Iason100 So true... this is why I quit following metal about 10 years ago. I couldn't hardly stand the hypocrisy of avid fans of the stuff. It's a narcissistic issue of "who's better" ALL the time, and it's this weird sense of fan control... perhaps because metal has historically drawn more individual musicians than most other non-mainstream genres. Go to a metal concert, and chances are, 30%+ of those in attendance are musicians. Weird crowd...
But James does rock, no questions asked.

@dran219 Metalcore is a disgrace? It is one of the defining subgenres of the new metal generation; along with Progressive Metal, Mathcore, and Tech. Metal. You may not personally like it but you shouldn't dismiss it. Bands like Meshuggah, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Veil of Maya, Animals as Leaders, Periphery, Opeth, Between the Buried and Me, and many more. are some of the most important metal bands of this generation and the future of the genre. A7X is a solid band, but provides nothing new!
