I did email this user to point out that a small amount of flow is normal, indeed beneficial to axolotl, as they don't live in completely still water, just slow moving water.
My filter is set to pour water down the back of the tank, and then into plants so that the flow is comfortably distributed!
I'm an adviser for a few axie keepers, don't worry - I always research before I do anything.
I don't know much about this species but I would blindly agree with d1gobest1 if I had to guess... if something is from slow moving water in nature can TOLERATE slow moving water but doesn't like fast moving water than you should keep it in STILL WATER... Just cuz there is SOME movement in nature doesn't mean it won't do better without. Doesn't mean it WILL do better without either... BUT I've heard that they not only do best in STILL water but their gills will get much bigger to compensate...
Hey, calm down. I've kept exotics for years honey, don't worry.
You do need surface displacement to allow oxygen to enter the water better. The water will go stale and fetid if left completely still, which means it will go toxic faster.
The gills are forced bigger to cope with the chemical and oxygen imbalance - which is more stressful than minimal water movement.
Best thing to do is to cut them into portions of about 8mm cubed. That's about the ideal size for the axolotl mouth to sook up. Frozen cubes such as bloodworm will disintigrate into smaller peices on melting and bloodworm makes a good staple diet.
S-Rhyma, you've got lots of potential to be an advisor, but do remember a lot of people are new to it and don't know what info you need from them first. It's no worry, just patience is needed :)
I totally LOVE oxalatl...they are such great pets and VERY responsive to it's owner...they recognize you and star swiming very happily...at leat mine does it. Bue really...I don't know why I've NEVER seen such a beautiful, healthy and big (26cm) axolotl like mine. She's yellow with red barbatans...both the colors are REALLY vivid...especially the red. Someday I'm gonna put a picture of her in here...her name is Eva. ^^
Lol, don't worry about it. You shoulda seen Spyyk this morning! I waved some chicken in front of his nose - he grabbed it and swam off like a mad thing, chicken flapping and smacked into a wall.
My apologies, this isn't raw chicken, this is cooked sliced meat, soaked beforehand to leach out salts etc. You can tear that and ham into nice thin strips to "replicate" a wiggly worm.
Believe it or not - he finds this great fun. If he doesn't like it - he walks off.
:D
He's such a sweetheart - you can see more on spyyk.blogspot.com, and www.allfishforums.com. (Note: on allfishforums.com, the first 4 pages of Spyyk are rubbish)
Does one need a large aquarium and a place to climb out? They look like they have lots of character :)

Update: Sadly, after living comfortably for the last year and a half with his tankmate Benny, they had a bit of a fight and poor Spyyk lost an arm.
Fortunately we know how to heal em and he has a tank of his own now. He's healing very well, skin over stump and seems to be regrowing!
I have dealt with a few lost-limb cases in the past with rescues and bring-ins, but I know it can be scary for newbies!
Chill, cool, clean and care - if you need help at all, just shout me, ok?
:)

I hope that alleviates your worries. :)

i used to give mine pellets...but since he tasted little fish...he doesnt eat anything else..lol
d1g0b3st1 5 years ago
does anyone know how many pellets of food axolotls are ment to eat mine refuses to eat more than three and i'm worried she's not eating enough
tulipfeind 5 years ago
LOL c'mon do you seriously expect us to give you a number w/o seeing the size and texture/density of the pellets 1st?
if it eats 3 then stop eating after that, either try feeding it smaller peices or a diff. food.
Maybe his regular 3 pellets, 1/4 pellet, then a couple super small bits of his fav. meaty-food like worms or something...

I just dangled some food infront of mine to try a different feeding method and it went crazy and nose-dived onto the floor :(

This is pretty common!

why raw chicken? shrimp and scallop would be way better wouldn't it?

It just happens to be Spyyk's favourite treat.

Lovely setup. Is that black sand you have.
Yopur axie seems very healthyand active. ^_^ Love the name too >.<

Spyyk's a little terror!
It's actually 3mm polyresin coat gravel - I swapped it for sand recently, as he kept eating it - I didn't want to risk impaction.
I ended up with the name because everyone wanted to call him "fluffy"...
I like all my animals to have odd names!
