This production wasn't superb, but Sherie totally stole the show. She had such a killer portrayal of Ursula, and that voice...holy shit. So much power and control. How can you not love her?
@ExcoriatedZero You're right. I think Sherie did a better than Carroll's version. She's a much better Ursula. Her voice is perfect for the psychotic role.
Everyone has a different outlook on their character, maybe this was the way she thought she could use her voice and acting better. I love it b/c it's different.
Sherie might not be who I'd imagine as Ursula because we are so used to her being a contralto like Pat Carroll was. That said I think she is an amazing singer. All the best singers are mezzo-sopranos who have remarkable control over their vocals. Sherie is one of them.
Based on some previous comments I am guessing it has closed all ready and thank G-d for that. Gave me nightmares what they were doing to one of the best and most Iconic of Disney's gems.......
she is good if misguided for getting involved in this travesty of a production. I would have had hope for it had Disney not pissed off the one person who may have been able to do The Little Mermaid the justice it deserves and requires to be anything other than some awful monstrosity of theme park meets Broadway meets Disney on ice minus the ice. All the talent Sherie Rene Scott may have wont be enough to save it just make the medicine go down a bit more easily........
This musical brought tears to my eyes!!!! I really wish they would reopen for a weekend or one night!! This is the first Broadway play that I've seen!!
@roxie761 since its based off of the movie isnt it a given that the play is going to be compared to the movie and while i like this version the movie version is 1 million times better, sherrie doesnt use enough theatrics and isnt dramatic enough for the character of ursula, i mean the movie ursula is soooooo much better, and she doesnt belt the whole time so it leaves her somewhere to go throughout the song and they changed too much in the play
Okay, don't get mad at me, but why is there so much editing on her voice? Yeah, she is a talented singer (believe me, I LOVE The Last 5 Years), but I feel like there's a hefty amount of pitch correction.
I hate when people compare this version with the movie, this is theatre, is way different; she plays with the tones to show the twist of the character, is a part of the construction of the character.
What the fuck?... You cut the best part out... (The wrap up of the score) The singers are great, but the scores are what I want to hook to my veins and of course no one will release those unadulterated...
I can't stop listening to this version! The original is great, but I like how the actress interpreted Ursula in this version as well. She makes the character seem more lively and fun-loving, perfect for a Broadway show.
I agree. To be honest, I hated the film. But I do enjoy how the musical made it a lot more fun-loving. Ursula's voice/appearance always bothered me in the original, it fit, but it still was creepy as hell (probably the intention). I like this actress because she's a bit more humorous and distracts the audience from her scheming, hahah.
You're not alone! Ursula scared the crap out of me when I was younger, probably because of how androgynous she was. Now she's one of my favorite Disney villains. I think the reason I like both interpretations of the character is because the actresses understand her motives and add psychotic, power-hungry undertones to their performances. I really can't choose one over the other because they're both fun to watch.
I actually like this version of the song better :) Beacuse she kinda makes Ursula seem more... exciting.. She makes it funnier.. and she's acting like Ursula has a lot of self confidence I think thats way COOL!! And her she has an amazing voice :O <33
this is the best version of Poor Unfortunate Souls I have EVER heard!! the one with the other person is really bad after every note she goes "ah" or "eeh" lol sheri is sooo awsome
I think some of the negative comments here are unfair and think Sheri's Ursula should be judged within the context of the stage show - not the movie.
If you think about it, her portrayal is perfect for the character. Ursula is evil and psychotic. Sheri manipulates her vocals to reflect those unstable aspects of Ursula's personality. That said, I don't think her Ursula would fit the movie just as I don't think Carroll's Ursula would fit the Broadway show.
Honestly, this has got to be one of the best Broadway adaptation albums I've ever heard. Beauty and the Beast rocked, Tarzan was cool, and Lion King was amazing, but this is so on the money as far as talent and music.
OH WOW!!!! I LOVE Sherie!!! She is just STUNNING in this song! I think i might have heard this before, and i was like, 'Hmm.. her voice sounds familiar...' AND NOW I KNOW WHY!!! Wow, i never knew it was her singing!!!! =DDDD She is AWESOME!
She is so AMAZING! I just saw little mermaid last night, and I loved it!!!! I was really sad that she didn't come out to sign autographs, though. I got everyone's but hers (and I wanted to meet her so bad!!!!)She snuck out the back supposivly! =-(
Sherie is amazing. I would kill to see her in this. But my parents took me to NYC to see RENT earlier this month so I doubt I can go again for a while. If Sherie is still in the cast next year I am definitly going. Does anyone know when her contract expires?
Sherie's amazing, I would looooove to see her in this... Little Mermaid was my favorite movie when I was little, and I adore her version of this song!! She has a real nasty but brilliant edge to her voice that I love very much.
...If you don't make the music your own, you're a pretty bad performer, for one thing. And for another, reinterpreting music from a movie to make it a Broadway show is a different issue than just simple reinterpretation to begin with.
I think you misunderstood what I was trying to say - it's a sloppy reinterpretation - it's all over the place. there's nothing particularly consistent about her performance. I'm all for reinvention, as a performer I understand how necessary it is.

I agree. Completely overdone and loses the creepiness of the original song. I remember watching The Little Mermaid as a little girl and that song gave me the chills. That, the Scar song from the Lion King and that creepy-ass guy from the Hunchback of the Notre Dame. This was just over-the-top and silly. I'm going to get a lot of hate for this, but ... well whatever. it's youtube. lol
I would have expected Ursula to have a deeper and more menacing voice, but Sherie possesses the tone of a more refined and sinister evil. This is great, thanks for posting!
