A know a place where I can find lots of those in the wild I've actually caught them before they're VERY cute. Don't worry, I always release them afterwards but I will never tell where their secret pond is!
Gorgeous snake. Are there any known captive breeding programmes going on right now? I have had several Madagascan Boas that were endangered but thanks to such programmes they are now plentiful. I would love to be involved in getting this population going again.
This species became endangered due to habitat loss. They congregate around seasonal pools to feed on frogs, and the ponds were covered over for housing. These are the suburbs in San Mateo County just south of San Francisco. The main hold out population resides just SW of the San Francisco International Airport (SFO). Catching ("taking") one, or attempting to, i. e., "disturbing" or "harassing", is looked upon by the state and federal authorities as felonious conduct, with criminal prosecution.
@strandwolf How does this animal stand a better chance at surviving? Domestication or a dream concerning saving its habitat? One way is guaranteed and the other isnt.
i used to find what appeared to be a range extended virsion of the sf garter in corte madera in the ealry 70s.same colors lacking one stripe and had red blotches instead of the side stripe.have not seen one in 25 years!
My dad thinks that he may have one of these living in his yard, but I think it would be a range extension for the San Fran garter, his might be a different one, but I haven't gone to go see it for a positive ID. (Eureka CA is a bit far from Phx AZ.) LOL
Coast range garter snake is what youre dad is seeing, Thamnophis elegans terrestris or its the California Red-sided Gartersnake - Thamnophis sirtalis infernalis.
great video...thanks for posting this

@SimonMiriamfan Where I come from there are a couple of breeders who have these snakes, last year one breeder had about 40 babies from 1 female.
But they can't bring them back to CA, cuz they live in Europe so do I.
bayenne5b 7 months ago
@SimonMiriamfan The babies cost only about 70$

If it wasn't endangered, I'd have one of these. I love the color pattern.
