  • As a massive AIC fan, and a massive Ryan Adams fan, this pleases me greatly :)

  • i'm a huge AIC fan as well as Layne Staley and this is a GREAT cover..very unique.

  • good fuckin cover

  • Very good... but i prefer the AIC version...

  • I like this version, its different. Its a fresh approach. You can jazz and blues up any music. There is good music and bad music.

    This is good.

  • ur right i dont know shit abt this guy, and he honestly duznt sound tht bad, but this is a grunge song,, its just not jazz/blues, its like having clapton cover nirvana, it just duznt work, there ment to b separate

  • i wouldn't agree that they're supposed to be separate. there's a lot of blues in grunge

  • dude chill the fuck out,, the only reason i dont give a fuck about my spelling is because its fucking youtube, ur the ignorant dousche bag if u care abt spelling, it my opinion, so stfu

  • I get the distinct feeling you don't know shit about Ryan Adams if you think that this song doesn't capture the meaning of the lyrics in this arrangement.

  • Comment removed

  • Oh, man... I certainly hope English isn't your first language (EXEMPLARY use of punctuation and grammar throughout). And, if so, I suggest the immediate cessation of all YouTube commenting -- people might start, you know, thinking you're some kind of ignorant douchebag. And by the way, something (like, say, a song) that you yourself describe as "bluesy" is by DEFINITION "abt depression," and expressing that you"[feel] like shit." You just forgot about that "aspect," I guess.

  • dude I'm a die hard fan of AIC, and while this is different, it's really good. Much better than oasis...haha

  • classic rock version nice twist

  • i thinks it awesome that someone dose a cover in laynes memory rip.

  • seriously?

  • I dont think that anyone who would even come close to bashing Ryan Adams just isnt worth any bit of time wasted in listening to, from anyone. I think that you may say that this isnt one of his best songs, or covers at least, but dont speak badly about Ryan. Regardless of what poser hard-core music taste you may have, Ryan has proved himself worthy of musical goddly status, and you cant deny that. So please listen to his other songs before you say this is just oh so terrible.

  • no a great song is always a great song just a different take on it is all

  • 10/10 for song choice!

    4/10 for execution!

  • I think this sounds to "up" sounding for this song.

  • Lovely version of this song. Ryan Adams does some good interpretations of other peoples songs.

His Oasis 'Wonderwall' cover is better than the original.

  • his Wonderwall is so much better than Oasis' version, in my opinion

  • I agree. Makes Oasis sound like the lumpen pub rock chancers they were.

  • its a way differrent version but i kinda like it cuz wHOW i just got to the chorus ....never mind this is fukin horrible i agree with eveyone else ......idk its a wierd version of this song

  • yeah, the chorus sounds a bit off, but kudos to the guy for doing what is, essentially, a damn good cover.

  • right on right on

  • they were a little out of key in the first chorus; but the idea was spot on.

  • what a fag!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I wish I had four hands.....

...so I can give Ryan Adams FOUR THUMBS DOWN!!!

  • I don't think all the yuppies in the crowd knew what they were listening to!

  • this is great interpretation, your an idiot if you think he is trying to be layne. Just don't comment your thoughts if there retarded like yourself

  • this is totally lame, nobody should copy or try to copy Layne

  • Great interpretation but I'm not a fan of the vocals, particularly. I don't really like his phrasing but the music is badass. I would love to hear Shooter Jennings cover this.

  • Think I'd have liked this better if I'd never heard the original.

This guy's voice isn't as good

  • I feel the same

  • I'm a huge Alice in Chains fan and I looked this video up because I heard Shooter Jennings mention it in an invterview. Seriously the best part of music is that it's not confined and there are no limits. Some people are so narrow minded and think music can't and shouldn't be changed or re-done. I love the original but I applaud this version for keeping the art and spirit of music alive. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

  • I personally think it was a nice try... but it's nowhere near as good as the original. I'm not even one of those die hard fans of AIC. I've just been listening to them a lot lately, and stumbled upon this cover.

I honestly don't think this is very good.

  • AIC fan to the end, don't particularly like Ryan Adams, but he does one hell of a fucking cover. Great job!!

  • I think this guy is a douchbag, and why cover a song that is perfect already? Fuck this guy!

  • really nice cover I really like ryan adams' covers

  • That was a great cover

  • Shadows we play, and think all is solid, we are substantial; our dreams too. The world cares not, only the night claims us, shadows we run from the sun; if you are looking for me, you will find me,

down deep, in night, that other light,

    down in a hole;

  • wtf is that? original lyrics w/ the same name or what. not critisizing, just asking. im not an asshole who passes judgement just curious

  • No, I am a poet, when I find a video inspiring, I write a short poem. I do my work on You Tube.

  • so I return haunted , a fading, flickering shadow, I walk these white one way back streets,

lingering, if you are wondering what has become of me,

just look for me down in a hole; the world a shadow play, to be, fading flickering moonlight,

down in a hole, that is where you will find me.

  • Love both bands but definitely prefer the AIC version. I think it's cool that RA is a metalhead. He did an a guest dj spot on sirius 27 a couple years ago as dj doom. You might be able to find it on the web somewhere.

  • ruined it

  • your mother ruined it.

  • it's ok but will never be held up to the greatest band in the world

  • what is that guy in the white jacket playing at 1:00 ?

  • A pedal steel guitar

  • a pedal steel guitar... It's normally a country or western instrument... Hats off to that guy. you have to push pedals with your feet, knees, and play slide while banjo finger-picking... way too complicated for me

  • great song.

  • never been better than the original but good cover. the only part im not too keen on is the "my wings have bin so denide" bit, sounds a bit corny but the rest is gr8.

  • Down in a hole again, I am haunted by what is expected of me,

down in a hole you will find me.

we men are told we must yield to nothing,

    It is down in a hole I linger, a shadow;

the world is cast in shadow,

a ghost I can not escape these voices that crowd in upon me.

Down in a hole, you will find me, I am a shadow, i am darkness, and I hunger for the light.

Look and find me, down in a hole.

  • pretty good i think and i'm a huge alice fan at least he brought his own style to it he made the song his own layne probably wouldve dug this version

  • down in a hole with your cover...

  • wtf is this shit ? why ruins such a great song by alice ?

  • beautiful sound..

  • Sounds like shit

  • Told. Better than the original and than the studio recordings.

  • Good cover? Yes, it's a great cover.. But it's no where near better than the original.

  • niceee cover even thats cool make a song with ur own way

just thinkin of singin alice in chains songs its a great idea

  • cool he isnt a layne wannabe...he put his own twist...i like it..

  • he killed this song.

  • he killed this song

  • Damn, I don't even like Ryan Adams, but that was pretty damn good! I gotta new found respect for him now!

But on a different note, he looks ridiculous in his emo get-up. He's gotta be pushin 50, he's not pulling it off very well.

  • Pretty sure he is like 32....

  • Man, I got him confused with Bryan Adams.

  • he was born in Nov, 1974 - making him 34 years old.

  • Yeah...I got it. I said I got him mixed up with Bryan Adams, who's like 50. Fucking mind your own business ou fucking johny come lately.

  • No Bryan Adams is the Canadian guy who sucks; Ryan Adams is the guy singing here, asshole.

    LOL, just messing with you.

  • great cover cus he doesnt try and imitate layne

  • wow, cool cover. this is the 1st time i've listened to ryan adams... only reason i clicked on this link was coz i thought it said bryan adams! but clad i checked this out...

  • nice cover, I think AIC's version has a more powerful vocal delivery, but this is a damn fine cover of one of the best songs in the 90's

  • Well said Fraeg....

  • he gets to the root of the songs meaning, probobly cause he can relate to it.....ryan is a true artist

  • RYAN ADAMS WAS A HEROIN ADDICT. LAYNE STALEY WAS TOO. See why he covered it? It's an homage from some one who won their fight to someone who lost. Keep that in mind and listen to the song again. You can hear it. It's not even that he was trying to put his own spin on it. He was saying..."man, I get it...". This song clearly spoke to him and music had nothing to do with it.

  • jerry cantrell wrote the song mate!! there may or may not be a drug related message, but i dont think its as clear cut as about "Heroin" its up for interpretation something that ive heard both Jerry and Layne state in interviews about lyrics to their songs.

  • Nothing like 'Junkhead' hey...

  • Sorry for coming in so late to this convo. Just found the video so just found the comments.

I agree that the interpretation is something left up to the listener. Whatever the lyrics mean to you and how it applies to your life or situation is what it means.

With that said, one may want to know that Jerry wrote this song shortly after the death of his mother. Maybe that helps shed some light on where his head was at when he wrote it.

    Peace

  • ok

i really like how he changed the song to match his style but i respect the real AIC alot

so i cannot say that i like this song all that much though this man is a genius for being able to do this

i take this for wat it IS

a good tribute to a LEGENDARY song LONG LIVE THE LEGEND OF ALICE IN CHAINS!!!!!!!

I respect that he made it in his own style

that is brilliance in itself but the one and only legend is AIC themselves

i do not have words for what they mean to me

    the real DIAH is....LEGEND

  • I been looking at some covers of AIC songs, and this was pretty damn good, compared to some others. Yes, I love the original, but take this for what it is. A tribute to a good band and song. I never heard of this dude, but I like how he arranged the song to do his own thing with. Still bringin' the intended feeling meant for the song. I like when someone covers a song that meant something to them in their own interpretation of it fitting in their own style. Also, thanks for posting this.

  • listen to his cover of wonderwall. Noel Gallagher actually said Ryan Adams' cover of it was even better than his Oasis version. And Noel Gallagher is an egotistical prick, so him saying that means something. (he actually believed that Oasis should be mentioned in the same breath as the Beatles and the Rolling Stones)

  • Ooh, I actually love Wonderwall... I'll do that now. :D

  • Clean version, you don't need to scream when you are down in a hole.......

  • it's interesting, i give him that. I like that he arranged the song to fit his style. The verses are good but i just can't get into the chorus.

  • I was surpirsed when I found this, I'm a huge AiC fan and A huge Ryan Adams fan, didn't expect this to work but he really pulled it off, fantastic cover.

  • class

  • terrible!!

  • such a good version

  • Im a HUGE aic fan and I gotta say that this was a cool version of the song because it was unique, the arrangement was different giving the song a little bit of a different feel. And I love the "I'd like to fly but my wings have been so denied" part! It sounds so full when the entire band kicks in. :)

  • tjanks dude,i cried.

  • what a great version of this song! The original with layne had so much feeling and when someone can remake a song with a deep level of true feeling like this it is a blessing. You can tell the song meant a lot to him like many of us. his medium works!

  • Ryan's version is damn perfect in soo many ways.

  • Whoa... Impressive choice of a badass song to cover. While I feel this version pales in comparison to the awesome original, I give Ryan Adams props for doing it. Long live AIC!

  • ...OR, you could suffer through Duvall trying to sound like Layne and pumping his fist in the air like he's in an 80's hair band.

I'm with wharfratt82 - I think Layne would much prefer this.

  • ultimate complament any musician can recieve is to see other musicians doing their work.

  • .....this song tells me they approve of his version, as well do I!!

  • Being a fan of both, AIC and Ryan Adams I really love the fact that one can be a fan of the other. One thing EVERYONE has to remember, in order for Ryan to "cover" this song he has to have permission from the original artist in order to perform it live or to put it down on CD, and he did put this song out on a CD. From what I know about Jerry Cantrell and the rest of the band is they are very picky and very rarely allow anyone to do any of their songs, so the fact that they allowed RA to do

  • This is one heroin addicts tribute to another's desperate cry of helplessness and despair. If any artist would get this song and infuse it with his own pain it would be RA.

  • wow, very interesting version. I give him credit for even being an AIC fan

  • you negative people need to see the beauty in this..he turned a classic 90's rock tune into a powerfull country ballad..layne would dig i think

  • I still prefer Summer of 69

  • THATS BRIAN ADAMS..NOT RYAN ADAMS

  • Wharfratt82 "Sarcasm - Coming to an idiot soon!"

  • Wharfrat, it's actually Bryan Adams. Get your info straight if you're gonna YELL. Dickhead.

  • nope, its Ryan Adams, Not BrYan Adams, Learn your musicians ;-)

  • different, but i liked it. props for adding his own thing :]

  • are you kidding me? you can't deny it that this song is pretty good... I mean did you want someone trying to sing it exactly like layne from alice in chains..it has it's own style and the guy's vocals aren't that bad. He doesn't ruin it at all in my opinion. I like it and i am a huge fan of aic.

  • Well said. It is called an ARRANGEMENT. It is not a cheap cover. It is well done, an interpretation, and is a tribute to the greatness of the original epic and the band.

  • super-ryan!

  • pretty

  • It's sad how many people interpretations of great songs do not extend beyond "its about drugs". This songs about Jerry's relationship with his girlfriend at the time.

  • Why people always compare cover songs with originals?! This is a completly different version!

  • wtf he fucked the song up, it used to be my favorite song, since when does it begin with "I give this part of me for you" and "down in a hole" sounds so %@#@ gay. you want to make a cover song for amazing bands DONT MESS WITH THE TUNE AND LYRICS!! alice in chains forever!

  • By the way this song is about kicking herion Cantrel did write it as most of ALC I just read atell all book written by Cantrel

  • ["Down in a Hole"]'s in my top three, personally. It's to my long-time love. It's the reality of my life, the path I've chosen and in a weird way it kind of foretold where we are right now. It's hard for us to both understand...that this life is not conducive to much success with long-term relationships.

  • GREAT COVER! Song adapts well to this arrangement.

  • Love Ryan Adams, Love AIC. Not a fan of this cover. The composition was great, but the vocal stylings were not my cup of tea..

  • this has nothing on the alice in chains version. his voice is exaggerated and forced. he doesnt have the soul for this song.

  • it sounds forced

  • Anyone who takes anything away from Ryan Adams or Layne Staley is an idiot and by the way the song is not about Heroin, just about trying to get laid. It was written by Jerry Cantrel, Layne just sang. Jerry was the brains, song writting and sang most of the best parts. So the dreamers can keep making shit up.

  • Ryan Adams covers a great song brilliantly and what's wrong with that fact alone? Its clear he's got absolute respect for the lyrics. Is the AIC original better? Its a moot point. The song itself is strengthened by Adam's reading of it.

  • Very well stated...

  • This is POOPY!

  • he makes it his own which is a raw talent for sure...but this making it BETTER shit is way off and a not really a smart comment especially since this song is one of the most intense Alice in chain tracks ever!! Dont belive me, watch the unplugged Version ......something else.

  • Well put....couldn'tve said it better myself.

  • Not really.

  • Ummm....fail for that comment.. Layne Staley wrote this song about his overwhelming heroin addiction that he could not overcome, although this is a well done cover, he could NEVER sing it with the conviction and emotion that Layne did. EVER!!!

  • that might be a safe comment to make. However, I'm sure this song means quite a bit to Ryan because he also suffered from a heroin addiction that he felt he couldn't overcome either.

  • Well that is something that I never knew, thanks for sharing that, I myself am just discovering Ryan Adams, I'm dating a girl that is absolutley obsessed with him so she turned me onto his music, I love his version of wonderwall. Again, thanks for telling me somthing I didn't know.

  • ryan adams actually had a crippling drug habit of his own, so do your homework...

  • Hey, MORON...Look down a couple of statements and you will read two things,

    1. That I admitted that I was just getting into Ryan Adams, and 2. Told the person that stated that he had a drug problem, "Thanks for pointing out something I never knew." So before you look like and idiot again YOU do YOUR homework by reading the whole page of comments before you send someone a repetative, smartass comment that he has already been corrected on. imbusul.

  • nice spelling on that last word, 'imbecile', and that wasn't even directed towards you...

  • Oh, All Hail the grammar Nazi!! If it wasn't for me then why did I get an email from you saying it was a "reply?"

  • Seriuosly guys I think Layne would have loved this, someone in this world had the bollox to cover a classic and actually make it his own. Good work mr Adams in my opinion!

  • bollocks, great cover of a great song!!

  • bman...Adams has about 10 albums of his own shit, so don't worry. Life's too short to be a narrow minded fuck.

  • Life is way too short, and Layne Staley is an example of that. Life is also to short to waste insulting people, because their opinion doesn't match yours. Oh, but, I'm a narrow minded fuck, so don't take my word.

  • Yeah, this sucks.

  • ooh.... well the positive point is that he didn't copy the song but.... the original version is much better. And it is the one who bring me tears to my eyes instead of this one.

  • Ryan's version of this songs brings tears to my eyes. Just fantastic.

  • And Layne's doesn't? This is simply a cover, admittadley a good cover, but the desperation and hopelessness of Layne's voice on his own song can never be matched, c'mon. Need I say it again? Please watch the unplugged session AIC same song and then listen to this one, if Ryan Adam's version brings tears to your eyes again then I feel sorry for you. I'm not saying that this attempt is poor, quite the opposite, but you have to admit that it lacks the emotional charge that Layne did w/ it.

  • You really know what you're talking about. As much as I like Ryan Adams and this particular cover I gotta say it doesn't touch ANY live performance I've seen of AIC doing the original. I think its just a great songwriter recognizing a great song and covering it. To make more of it than that is wrong.

  • Awesome

  • Nice cover - yet another tastefully done by Ryan Adams.

Can't you people complaining open your minds a little - it is possible to like both versions and both artists/groups.

  • i respect ryan adams, but i don't think he should cover alice in chains stuff. genres are too different.

  • shut up Mr/s nobody... This is awesome!

  • who the fuck said you can't make a cover your own. both versions are awesome.

  • record shops invented genre's so they could sell CDs to people easier.

so why should anyone pay attention to them?

  • This wanka is shit!!! he ruined a good song, make it sound like shit.. this is the most untalented piece of music ive ever heard.. somebody shot that loser

  • Listen Dickhead, I don't think he decided to cover this to fuck-it-up. "untalented piece of music" Clean out your ears you drug fucked bafoon?!

  • Nice rendition, Ryan. Any reminder of Layne Staley and Alice In Chains is always welcomed. {Pointing @ Heel Brother Ross for the assist on this one}

  • funny how everybody here says that alice in chains has no talent. all this guy did was take the same song and take out all the good singing and shit. AIC is fucking great. Layne staley is the best singer EVER!

  • mattiego...

i really don't think you can call Alice in chains "talentless pricks"

and this cover really does not do justice to the original... sorry to disapoint.

  • Cuts like a knife NAH NAH NAH NA NAH NAH NA NAH!!

  • Wow. He fucked this song up. I thought it was going to be a good Nashville style cover at first...but then he started to sing

  • this is not his/their most depressing song. To be the one, in my time of need, luminol, others. Hes just depressing sometimes and thats fine.

  • What we have here ladies and gentlemen, is probably one of the finest collection of musicians on the planet today, making le Euro rock pub band Scorpion-a-like talentless pricks AIC song actually listenable. THAT'S A FACT! You bunch of self harming, ripped jean wearing, lighter waving teenie mongs should be grateful for that at least.

  • probably the most ridiculous comment ever, clearly intended to get a rise out of people.

The fact is that this version while good, has nothing on the original and that's a fact. Layne Staley is god!

  • whiney shite this

  • first of all jerry wrote this song, not ayne, but either way this is a complete fuckin insult. this asshole should be shot for this.

  • oh yea totally spaced on that... thanks.

Seriously, petition to have ryan adams put to death.

  • Seriously... Layne came back to life then od'd all over again when he heard this garbage. This song should only be covered by people who are TRULY as unhappy as Layne was when he wrote. This fag is way too happy to be doing this. Overall opinion?

    GAY.

  • Comment removed

  • joelovesacdc, that's the most absurd statement i've ever heard. this cover is incredible, and in someways superior to the original. unhappiness has nothing to do with writing a good song or cover. listen to some ryan adams albums and tell me he isnt the saddest mother fucker around right now. oh yeah, and ac/dc sucks.

  • Sorry man, but insulting one of the greatest groups of hard rock isn't going to change the fact that Ryan Adams doesn't make me believe him. To me, him doing this song makes him a liar. He doesn't sing like he knows what this song is about, and to me, that's what's important when covering a song. I'm sorry, but a majority of people aren't going to agree with you, and you need to learn to deal with that.

  • I hear dogs crying in the chorus

  • oh i hate it that when people do covers of songs, there's always someone that says "oh fuck off... this guy is shit... the original is better" yeah... maybe that's true... or maybe not, but this version brings out emotion that Alice in Chains did not.... but both good versions
