Before the original version's ill-fated première, or prior to the edited version's release???

I had to rent this after I saw that documentary that talked about how all the critics hated it. But after seeing it was like geez it wasn't that bad, it had good music and beautiful scenery and the acting was no where near as bad as Pearl Harbor.
