The original Parliaments were the shit. You can see all through this TV show. Their dance routines & voices are amazing. It was a different band with Fuzzy Haskins etc. I like Parliament/Funkadelic but this is the line up I'd really like to have seen. I can only guess how happening their shows must have been.
In retrospect, the linkages between Jimi Hendrix and the Funkadelic ensemble are clearly evident. Maggot Brain is an homage to JMH and Eddie Hazel is a leading disciple of Jimi's hard funk prototype. The 1969-70 incarnation of JMH was blazing trails for the prolific likes of George Clinton and many other cutting edge black musicians (not to mention Miles Davis). What a very rich cultural period that is still relevant and contemporary sounding, generations later. High culture is always on time.
@gangstertubedotnet Bootsy was playing with James Brown when this was made. He joined P-Funk in 1973. You do know that Bootsy played along side Hendrix, which is where part of his persona comes from. He even voiced a recent Jimi Hendix documentary because of his spot on impersonation.
@dte21 HUGE MYTH, since Collins often did a dead on impersonation of Hendrix. Also why I thought he was chosen to do Jimi's voice in the recent documentary. Makes sense when you look at the chronological order. Thanks

@bobbyz23 if I corrected myself 3 WEEKS ago why YOU feel need to chime in? I stand corrected, it's a myth based on Bootsy Collins claiming years ago that he and Jimi played together in Curtis Knights' band and doing a impersonation of Jimi to fellow JB members. The over-active imagination of a teen age musician. And again THANKS to DTE21 for clearing the air.
@VRBPRO-Actually, Bootsy and older brother Phelps Collins, didn't hook up with JB until 1970, damn near a full year after this performance. Then they joined P-Funk in 1972, not 1973.
im surprised george clinton got signed, he looked and sounded like crap. BUT im GLAD he did. he gave us THE greatest funk and some classics. atomic dog, flashlight, aquaboogie, heck every song is a classic.
@coolpapa1 I think he was signed based on his previous show of talent when he was with the parlaiments .... So they knew he could do something....they didn't base it on this. If he'd gone into the office screaming with his head skinned on the sides sweating like a runaway slave i'm sure they would have backed away slowly without making any sudden moves! HAHAHAHA
Starts off like a Sly Stone rip off, but it sounds so funky, I don't care. Into my own thing--Sly Stone1968(Dance to the Music) I am glad someone posted this!!!
The only thing that could have possessed George into looking like that has three little initials: LSD. He was having a bad hair AND wardrobe day! Amazing amazing clip though.
How the hell could he afford to pay a band that freakin big?? Some of these brothas look like they weren't doin anything but shakin their butts on stage.

when he was 18? hmmm he was quiet, but had that cocky 18-yr old strut. when i got to know him, there was no ego at all.
he was somewhat shy, softspoken and pretty much stayed that way. he was just so normal that when you heard funkadelic you looked at the guitaists wondering where the heck that great sound was coming from. eddie never showboated that i saw. he didn't dress crazy either.

this is what i saw when i walked into a mcdonald's in 1968, the first year they toured!
it's too bad the band didn't stay together, they were the new sound back then.
Eddie Hazel was 19 in this video and just starting to work on Maggot Brain. I was blessed to know him for 15 more years.
According to Billy Bass, Funkadelic was never meant to be the permanent band...don't ask me why.
i still communicate with him and tawl ross, 41 years of funkadelic friendship!

he didn't talk a lot. i used to call him my man of few words.
funkedbyinjection 2 years ago 2
he was warm and affectionate (i'm female).
i guess he let his guitar do all the talking for him. he said he wanted his guitar to be an extension of his voice.
he loved to play jokes on people and could take them right back, too.
yet there was a vulnerability about him. i always felt very protecitve of him.
he liked kids and would spend time with them showing them this and that on their guitars.
funkedbyinjection 2 years ago 4
