For those wondering which album this is from, after a lot of searching I've found it. It's from an album called "The 9 Volt Years," and the song can be bought on Amazon. I like this version a lot more than the "regular" version.
@LifeSizePotato This is the demo that was sold to Robert Gordon. Robert Gordon's version of the song sounds a lot like it. When MC recorded it himself a year later, he changed it up a bit. But this is the song in its pure form. "9 Volt Years" is a great CD, full of gems like this.
What a great tune! Brings back the memories...This version sounds slightly different than the LP version..Marshall still rocks!! even 28 years after the release of this classic tune!
@BOMBAYBOB1 I've been enjoying this song since like 83 and this is the first time ive ever heard this version. I like the other version a lot better, but this is neat
Hey! It's been 7 months since you asked, but if you haven't found it yet, you can get it for 8$ and some change on his, "The Best Of marshall Crenshaw:This Is Easy," at deep discount.com.

Saw Marshall Crenshaw in the pub at St Clair College, Windsor, Ontario probably about 1979... loved this song ever since!

The minor diffrences between different versions of the same song often have the effect of recreating the magic of first hearing the song.

I saw him at Chicagofest in around '84. He was so great. Like Buddy Holly, reincarnated, maybe.

did he borrow the melody from "cruel to be kind"?

@calimar28 there's definitely some similarities in the chorus, the chords but I don't think the melody.
