Re: Turkey-They have systematically taken steps to emasculate the army and the free press. These institutions have historically been the only bulwark against Turkey becoming a De Facto theocracy. Dershowitz brings up the issue of functionalism, that once elected, the gov't has to maintain democracy. What's Israel's excuse, then? Israel is elected, but once elected the Israeli gov supports dictators like Mubarak, dictators in Jordan, unelected groups in Lebanon (the Phalange), and of course, keeps Palestinians under military dictatorship and blockade. Furthermore, as much as we can celebrate the fall of Mubarak, it is a risky set of circumstances for Israel, when the only government that has a real peace treaty with Israel in the Middle East has just fallen. Israel obviously is watching closely in the hope that a true, peaceful democracy develops. But whether that happens or not - no one knows.

Germany was run via emergency powers f the president who appointed governments as parliament was deadlocked. Hitler came to power in January 1933 because he was appointed by the president, not because he was elected by the German people. If you must use a german comparison, Leipzig 1989 is far more relevant than Berlin 1932.

Dershowitz brings up the issue of functionalism, that once elected, the gov't has to maintain democracy. What's Israel's excuse, then? Israel is elected, but once elected the Israeli gov supports dictators like Mubarak, dictators in Jordan, unelected groups in Lebanon (the Phalange), and of course, keeps Palestinians under military dictatorship and blockade. Israel is undemocratic.
To talk about the election of Hitler is utter nonsense. They're getting rid of a dictator, not electing one.

Israel is NOT a democracy. Within Israel proper there are +35 laws that privilege Israeli jews over Israeli arabs & christians (ie Palestinian Israelis), with more in the pipeline. At best this as an apartheid ethnocracy, and then there are the Occupied Palestinian Territories; where 1/2 a million illegal Israeli settlers live under Israeli law & 4 million Palestinians live under military law, and don't even have suffrage (right to vote) despite Israel controlling their lives for 43 years now.

Unfortunately, many, many people in the West are frankly frightened of fundamental and political Islam, and worry that an Islamist govt will come to power, or even an Islamist-lite govt as in Turkey. In these sorts of debates, it is necessary to acknowledge these fears, and marshall facts to show the audience at home, and the debaters in the studio, why these feelings and misperceptions are wrong.

Israel can probably expect Egypt to end up like Turkey - which is to say, a strong, democratic nation well grounded in it's own history and culture, and responsive to the demands of it's people and an active promoter of justice for the Palestinians and peace in the region. Israel is dreading the loss of it's free ride in regards to the Palestinian question.
