  • This is a youtube video by Jack Black...listen to his voice...

  • @themoonsbluelight You sent the video response back to me, I made the vid. funny. My wife says I do sound like him. HAHA.

  • I love the bench. Do you know what the brackets were that you used for the bottom shelf? Thanks

  • @mjdirk23 I bought the bottom brackets which are L brackets at Home Depot also. They are a little wider than most and I suggest 2 per leg. Thanks for the comment, let me know if you have any more questions.

  • Blinko656,

Mike , thanks for all your help. I did find the RTC42

    Bob

  • Cant find this KWB1 kit here in the UK,or the brackets to hold 4x4 timber pots.

  • @strongbow57 If you really need them, maybe I can send them to you. Yes Im just one of the few nice guys. HAHA..

    mike

I would try all the hardware stores in your area..

  • Mike, Those numbers didn't match with Home Depot, but I found a Simpson Work Bench Kit

#KWB1 for $39.99 at Home Depot. It's a lot more expensive. Is this the same kit you bought? I tried to include the link , but You Tube won't let me. Bob

  • Mike, thanks for the advise. I will certainly follow it. I copied the numbers & will check them against Home Depot's numbers.

Have you thought about putting casters (locking) on ? That way you can move the bench out of the way for cleaning or just relocating it to somewhere else.

    Thanks again, Bob

  • Yes, I'm in the Chicago, Il area. I just wanted to take a look at them. I'm also planning to make my bench 4' & put a laminate top over the 3/4" plywood. Or, would you go with 1/2" & a laminate?

  • @MrBigNose144 Definately go with the 3/4 inch on the top. 1/2 inch has a tendency to bowe down in the miidlde after a while. Also It would be good to put in a brace underneath from the front to the back. 2x4 would be good.

    m

  • @MrBigNose144 RTO42 and below that number is ESR 2523. I think that should do it.

    m

  • @MrBigNose144 I made a mistake. It is RTC42. NOT RTO42.

    mike

    sorry

  • Hey Blinko656, Nice job on the bench. I went on-line to Home Depot & found 440 Simpson Strong-Tie products. I scrolled through the lot of them & couldn't find the one you used. Can you supply the part number or Simpson model # for the correct part?

  • @MrBigNose144 I will go into the garage a little later and get the number. Hope it is on there. Are you in the US?

    mike

  • @MrBigNose144 Yes I have. I have another bench not scene with the coasters it is nice for cleaning purposes..

    m

  • are there any braces in the middle ?

  • @BethSmith77 No but I would put a 2x4 on the upper part of the bench if I did it again, actually it is not late. On the smaller bench i don't think you need one but on the 4x8 the work bench in the rear of the video it would be a good idea. (run on sentence haha)

  • "mine's a little larger..." Gotta gloat? JK! I really like your design, something about those simpson ties make the table look cool, I like the width too, gonna build something like this and bolt my miter saw. Thanks for the vid! BTW...you could totally pass for jack b. in a prank call!

  • Man...... you sound like Jack Black!

  • @153wellsst That's funny you are the third person to say that. ROFL..

    mike

  • @blinko656 you should be doing voice overs.....

  • @153wellsst What do you think of doing a 'Barry White' voice while describing the work bench. loooool. HAHA..

  • @153wellsst holy shit lol yup

  • what type of brackets did you use fo rthe bottom shelf section?

  • @jtcook1979 It's in the video, they are called simpspn ties. You can get them at Home Depot. Thanks for watching.. Glue everything..:)

  • @blinko656 thanks for the reply. i see the gray simpson ties on the top outside part of the bench that wraps underneath the top 2 x 4s. I don't see them attached the same way for the bottom part/storage shelf. Did you use a different type of tie for the bottom or L brackets? Great job by the way.

  • Nice music.....!

  • Is Jack Black narrating?

  • @djtonyc77 Thats funny..

  • Your son-in law is lucky to have such a cool workbench, but even luckier to have a great father in law to build him one. I like the simple design and the Simpson ties are excellent...

  • Comment removed

  • Some guy wants to charge me over $400 to get 2 of these made. I talked him down to $300 it would be 36 inches tall 48 inches wide by 25 inches. With 1 shelf to put stuff on it. Need it to put my DJ turntables on it. I should just buy the wood & do it myself. I'm not good at building stuff... Lol

  • Did you cut out the corners of the plywood to fit into the 4x4s- and how did you affix the brackets? Thanks!

  • Home depot. Lowes might have them. Thanx for watching.

    m

  • We're. Did you get the Simpson ties

  • The vice is a cheapie I got for 20.00 dollars at a True Value hardware store. Legs; exactly 36" tall - 4x4's Length is 96' Width 24' Top (surface) 3/4' thick I used 2x4's all around the bench. I had to cut them short in order so the 4x4 would meet the bottom of he to piece. I glued everything and used a nail gun to put the top together first then used small nails. The dimensions ar 24' x 96' with the exception of the area where the legs are put in. Hope that helps.
  • What model Vice is that? Great Table. Recessed bottom is nice as well to save Schinn damage LOL What are the esact cuts? thanks!

  • i just followed up at home depot. they are NOT hurricane clips.they are made by simpson-strong-tie and they are called RTC42 rigid ties. they are 4.93 each.

  • @slimsx34 Glad you found them. I think I mentioned Simpson ties at 00:52.

    mike

  • Just curious how tall you made the legs, and do you have a model number on those strongtie clips? My local home depot had nothing that looks like those clips. Thanks

  • @slimsx34 The legs are 36 inches tall. You can make them shorter or taller to fit to your size. I made 2 workbenches. One 24 x 96 and one 48 x 96 inches. I have heard the Simpson ties called hercule ties. The should have them one of the aisles. Usually where they sell all those kind of brackets. The are very popular, keep trying. let me know if you have any other questions.

    mike

  • @blinko656 Thanks. Im going to try another home depot near my brothers house.

  • Saw your video (thanks for posting it) & decided that the workbench you built was the right type for my basement workshop. I just completed it; it was very difficult but I stuck with it and it came out pretty good. Since I have no idea how you actually built it, I had to use my best judgment. It would have been helpful to know the height of the legs & the height of the finished product. Mine is 77" wide, 36" tall, 20" for the top (max dimensions I had space for). Let me know if you want a photo.

  • Simpson ties actually are called hurricane clips if anyone is looking for them. Most hardware stores will know what they are...it is just nice to call them by the correct term. Just built my work bench and thanks for the idea about the cubby holes (1/2" plywood boxes) that is a really neat idea--thanks for the video.//Chuck (nice background music... :-) )

  • @Que14kt Thanks for the comment! When I bought the ties at our Home depot I think they manufactured from the Company Simpson. Anyway the first part of the video has the Michael Jackson song 'Thriller' (that's the creeky wooden sound). HA HA. And then the great Curtis Mayfield. Have a good week...

  • Wicked bench ! Love those brackets, bet I can't get those here in the UK :(

  • What did you use to secure the bottom shelf? You showed the simpson ties for the top but can't see what is securing the bottom... are these the L-brackets you listed at the end in the pricing chart?

  • @teebow98 Yes, I did I use the Simpson L bracests for the bottom shelf. I used 2 per corner and screwed in 4" screws also. The brackets are $1.00 a piece and everything is glued. Turned out pretty nice.

    m

  • @teebow98 funny you asked that question... I was wondering the exact same thang first time I viewed.

  • 4x4 wide legs? or 4" by 4 ft long? Anyway how long did you make the legs lol :)

  • Would like one if I am staying with daughter for a longer time, son-in-law not interested in DIY.

  • very nice job. I like those brackets very cool, thanks 4 sharing

  • I would love to have one of those! but I bet shipping would be a killer to Florida!

    Nice work.

  • looks longer than 48" long. cool.!

  • @manholewisdom Funny, did I say 48" long. ROFL. It is 2 feet by 8 feet, funny. Thanks.

  • @manholewisdom What did you use to secure the bottom shelf? You said you used simpson ties on the top but can't see what is securing the bottom... are these the L brackets you listed in the price at the end?

  • A gift from the heart ! And love the " simpson ties " ! Gona get some for all of our projects.

Still can't get over your nice doggy house you constructed !

  • I like it ! That was so sweet of you awwww :)

  • Wow your good at this stuff man. I suck at handyman stuff lol

  • @Nephtali1981 My Dad was really good at designing and Im ok, there are some pro's out there that do the fine finish work. All ok here in Calif. Everybody doing well.
