I was an ice cave in the previous ice age, and when the climate changed and the ocean level rose, the sea water obviously melted the ice and the top of the cave collapsed in on itself creating what we see.
It's a sink hole, people see them all the time in the ground when the top of a cave can't hold itself up anymore, this one was in the ground as well until everything above happened.
Honestly though, it scares the shit out of me. I keep waiting for something to pop out of it.
Maybe it was a mine long long ago for previous civilations and when the pole shift occured and the face of the planet was changed, the ocean moved and now fills the hole

Think about this, people.....
Before the end of the last Ice Age that was at least 400' above sea level. That said, who dug it and why? Was it a mine of some sort? Was it actually a natural above ground cave (the stalagmites and stalactites show it was dry once and had water trickling through it's walls/ceilings)?
Just something to think about. It really should be thoroughly explored, though.

@heyycarolinee It's a very unique activity - diving The Blue Hole, but they tell you "chillax & everything will be fine" so we did, survived & loved the experience! :o)) Btw, my boyfriend and I have done a few adventurous things in our life so far (white water rafting levels 4-5 in Alaska, river sledging levels 4-5 in New Zealand, even skydiving 4 solo jumps), but we consider scuba diving The Blue Hole the BEST one of all...

All caribbean region including continental land such as Belize, Yucatan and Guatemala has these kind of holes. Look for "GUATEMALA SINKHOLE" it is the same type of hole, but in the city!!

I would like to live in Belize. I know you can get a visa for 30days then renew for 6 months. Does anyone know how long you have to remain out of the country to come back and do it all over? My husband I spent a day in Belize city and fell in love with the people there. We didnt even see the gorgeous islands but would love too soon.

I was an ice cave in the previous ice age, and when the climate changed and the ocean level rose, the sea water obviously melted the ice and the top of the cave collapsed in on itself creating what we see.
It's a sink hole, people see them all the time in the ground when the top of a cave can't hold itself up anymore, this one was in the ground as well until everything above happened.
Honestly though, it scares the shit out of me. I keep waiting for something to pop out of it.
