I'm not sure how much you know about the Ottoman Empire (I'd hazard a guess at very little) but cities in it such as Jerusalem and Bagdad were largely self governed. They attacked Israel because Israel was (and still is) a racist state where the Arab peoples (who were there before the majority of Jewish settlers) were being treated as second class citizens. They saw it as freeing thier brothers from oppression. If it had been Hindu people instead of Jews they still would have fought them. Indeed it was an agricultural society based on plantation farming for the mass production of crops. The system was so effective that the Irish would rather imported american grain than grow it themselves because the manufacturing costs were so great. It was the rich slave owners paying most of the tax, not the poorer peoples. So the Majority of taxes would have gone towards interstate and international commerce and the military. Look, I don't defend everything in the confederate government but what is the difference between 13 colonies wanting independence and 11 states? slavery was constant in both cases. california is actually an economic basket case. texas is equally strong and there is a move to push for independence.

You're analogy is pretty irelevent because the west (this time America not Europe) continues to mess around the middle east to this day and obviously favours one group over the other, exacerbating the situation. Rev Wright is against Abortion, Gay Rights, and only wants to hear people who agree with him.
Rev Wright has taken a Malcom X position on most 'pro black' issues. Yeah that sounds so much like the positions Obama has taken (who is more like Dr. Martin Luther King).
Malcom X and Dr. King agreed on a number of areas related to the black community. But they had very different views on how to attack those issues.
