Before Jayne's acting roles declined to the level of campy self-parody, her natural ability for both comedic and dramatic roles was definitely present. Marilyn was a much more gifted comedienne in my opinion, but she did not pull of drama as naturally as Jayne.

yes, Ekberg had the biggest breasts but you have to see Jaynes nudes when she was nursing plus Ekberg lost her hourglass &became zaftig so it really is an unfair comparison but agreed when she was trim, no one but perhaps an early Loren had breasts as big as Ekberg

He did not like her publicity antics but then he was married to Eve who had a similar body type and there was obviously some rivalry. Plus JM may have rebuffed him. He always spoke very poorly of her. He also did not like Sophia Loren and preferred the smaller busted Gina LolloB partially because that was his era of films and also because aggressive and Amazonian woman (despite his hype) really freaked him out. Lorna Maitland was the only true tall actress he ever worked with and he hated her!

I have heard that it was Jayne Mansfield that did not like Russ meyer. When she was a starlet befor stardom, he DID photograph her once, but she found him rude and agressive. he pretty much was just a T&A photographer and she new it. She wanted to be a MOVIE STAR not just cheesecake. By 1955 when he photograped her, her career was just taking off. Latter of course when the good roles dried up she would once again take it off for Playboy in june '63 it became their biggest seller of its time!

Meyer just was not very good at/into dealing with aggressive women. On screen he always made them powrful but then they were always beat up, trapped and forced into impossible situations. I wrote huge parts of his wikipedia pages and found he preferred average height actress with massive natural busts. Later when surgeries became more advanced he got out of control!

I disagree jayne had the biggest boobs of her time. Ekberg was better looking but out busted Jayne when she put on about 30 pounds. Really Anita never made it big, except for the Fellini movies. Jayne was an international icon. Russ Meyer was full of shit, anyone can clearly see this woman had HUGE breasts, and her wide ribcage made he look like she was 50 inches! in England in 1967 her bust was taped in at 46 inches and an E cup!

If you're wondering what Jayne was doing at around 1:01 for a few seconds... she was very frugal and liked freebies. She would promote a store or supermarket with her personal appearance, and be allowed to "free shop" and load up on goodies. The very last photo is best, and likely as close as we'll ever get to seeing her without makeup... it seems like she just woke up and is yawning. Sweet.

That's true but don't think that's from the supermarket openings she would attend, she also went shopping in between stage shows in costume for publicity I think. I even have one one of her shopping in a bikini.

There are a few photos of Jayne without any makeup. If you do a google image search for her LIFE magazine photos by typing in "jayne mansfield source:life" you will find many of her being rescued from a deserted island as well as some of her without makeup before an appearance.

Scarlett's body is definitely more like Jayne's, and so are her full facial features. hmmm, i don't see that at all. Scar Joh is built nothing like Mansfield though facially they look alike. Her body is closer to MM's but even then she's not that hourglassy. As budget as the Loni film was , Anderson was built much closer to Jayne than SJ. Her breasts are much bigger and she has those long elegant very slender legs and arms and a tiny waist. Scar Joh should play Harlow, a big improvement over Stefani who looked far too thin and gaunt faced.

Really? I've always thought of Scarlett as being very full figured, very similar to Jayne. Loni definitely had the body, but I didn't think she was anywhere near as pretty, her face lacked the softness.

I agree Gwen was a terrible choice for Jean, but I don't think Scarlett has enough innocence to play The Baby. Jean was vampish but so petite, I can't really think of any modern actress like her. Maybe if someone like Kirsten Dunst was sexier and more plump.

Although a very beautiful woman indeed, she took the marilyn approach and took it waaaaaaay over the top, marilyn was able to portray that bubbly and sensual personality with some subtleness, Jayne just puts it allll out there, however both woman were definitely iconic in their own light, great photos by the way! I don't think Jayne took the Marilyn approach at all (unless you are referring just to using the blonde sexpot shtick) specifically because as you said, she never wanted Marilyn's subtlety. Because of this lot of MM fans say Jayne was a cheap version of Marilyn, but it all boils down to personal preference. Some of Jayne's fans are just as easily put off by Marilyn's affected childlike innocence and fragility.

It's an interesting paradox. She was stuck with the dumb blonde stereotype because being a sexy blonde in the 50's was the quickest route to fame for a woman, and Jayne's primary aim in Hollywood was to become a famous star. She did lament over her image as a dumb blonde at certain points of her career, but she was thrilled with simply being famous and never refused a film due to issues regarding the role she played.

Not in 1957, Jayne became the Queen of the Fox lot and the biggest box office draw.

Of course, you are right that overall Marilyn was a bigger star, but that does not mean all the others who were below her in terms of star appeal were imitators. Personally, I find them to be complete opposites, aside from blonde hair and shapely figures.
