  • Well I have to say I prefer the T1 by a country mile

  • t1 is so much better sounding here. im sick of moog making claims that the new stuff is true to the original sounds. vintage will always sound better, cos its more nature, rough and free.

  • @cprostudio for me too. the T1 use linear VCOs, the T3 exponential VCOs and the sound is really very different.

  • @retrosound72 yeah, i was considering purchasing the minitaur but after i listened to this then listened to the macbeth minimac on sonicstate, im so getting a minimac, i think it sounds better than both and therfore worth the extra cost. BOOOOM, i cant wait!

  • Well I took the plunge and bought myself a set of T3's after stupidly selling a set of T1's back in the late 1980's. I have run these new ones through a decent sized PA and have to say they still have the same ground shaking effect of the T1's........ When you listen to them on a small studio amp they dont sound quite as "dirty" as the T1's but racked through a few K's of PA they "feel" lovely...... and that is the point with the Taurus....... you have to feel them!!........ and you can..

  • well now the only thing is the new minitaurus

  • I like the brightness of the Taurus 3 ... isn't anykind of synth supposed to sound different after being used 33 years ?

  • BTW, I also wanted to say that this is a great sied-by-side demo.

  • This is a great demo and the original Taurus 1 wins. I tried the 3 when it came out and returned it immediately, it's just a Phatty rehash and sounds like it has pillows in front of its output. Got a proper Taurus 1 and can't be happier: Nothing beats up the real thing. Plug it into one of the new light GK bass amps and the rumble will sound so clear it's unbelievable.

  • I think Cyril Lance (Moog Music's chief engineer) should have both his ears examined. There may be some wax in there. I've heard him say that he and his team have worked for days in the studio to try to replicate faithfully the sound of the original Taurus 1. I must say that it's a FAIL. Nothing else sounds like a T1: punchy, aggressive, defined, sizzling. The T3 is mellowed, thinner, blurry, muffled.

  • @AlainHubert I absolutely concur. Back in the days when the T3 was released, there was so much hype that this opinion was trashed by anybody supporting the T3 project. None of the new Moogs sound defined, they are all muffled. I own an original Musonics Minimoog and it destroyed a Voyager sonicwise in a second. Even a Taurus II/Rogue sounds better than any Phatty - I was a long time Taurus II user. The current Moog company is so based in hype it's sickening.

  • @drkam6 A couple of weeks ago, I went to my best friend's house with my 1975 Minimoog. We directly compared it to his Voyager Old School. We came to the same conclusion. The Minimoog's waveforms are much crispier, more defined in the high frequency range. The Voyager's continuously variable waveforms are its downfall. Even the simple triangle wave is sharper on the Mini. Even the filter has more character, tending to sync to the input signal when slightly overdriven. The OS filters are bland.

  • @AlainHubert I think it also has to do with the availability of components as time passed by. It is interesting to notice how quality of sound degrades listening to the three Tauruses, Probably they sacrificed sound in order to keep oscillator stability. What I criticize is that these T3 pedals bear the name "Taurus", which they're not. Moog could have called it Aries, Capricorn - whatever, but they knew it wouldn't sell. On top of that, they added the "faithful replica" hype.. scammy?

  • Taurus 1 wins

  • Comment removed

  • Both good, but my vote is still the T1. The T3 reminds me more of the T2. Cripser but wimpier. The T1 just has a very full and satisfying bass, like gravity on Jupiter pulling you to the floor. The T2 and T3 are more like regular moog synths you play with your feet. They should have copied the exact original T1 circuits and then added some bells and whistles over it.

Instead it sounds like they tried to modernize it and of course ended up watering down it's bass magic.

    I own a T1 and T2.

  • Rembo FB Part2

  • The good thing about the T3, is that it will finally drive down the price of over-inflated T1's found on EBay and elsewhere. But the bad news for the T1 is that; replacement parts are hard to find I'll most likely grab the T3, and 'scope' it with a comparison to the T1 via high-end 1/3 octave graphic. The T3 can be software updated as well, if enough buyers scream loud enough.

  • This is a well-done comparison, especially if you go to 'Moog's' youtube vid with the engineer tweaking one in his lab. Unlike the Moog vid, your sound quality, through expensive earbuds via laptop is more correct for playing moog pedals. How could Moog screw up their own video!? Anywho, They both sound pretty close to me. If one ran the T3 through a Klark-Technik eq, I bet one could get even closer to the T!. Well done.

  • This sounds awesome! The beginning sounds like the Mass Effect jawn

  • Thank you very much for this video.

T3 is a joke. Nothing can beat the T1's clarity, and this video proves it.

T3 is not a replica of the T1 as Moog hypedly propagandized it. It is an entirely different synth with new components, "based on the Taurus".

They could have called it instead Aries, Scorpio, Libra - whatever, except Taurus. But hey - the Taurus name sells! Isn't it?

  • One thing I noticed during the "reso bass" demonstration is that on the T3, Oscillator A was set an octave above Oscillator B. When "reso bass" is played on the T1, both oscillators are set to the same octave.

  • T1 All The Way

  • It is not really a very true comparison as the Filter on your Taurus 1 is fully open and not on the Taurus 3. You should have tried to match the filter settings as it is giving the T1 a 'cutting edge' over the T3. I own a set of T3's and have also owned 2 sets of T1's, the T1 is slighly more 'mean' sounding, there is a subtle difference between the 2 synths, the T3 is possibly a bit smoother sounding?

  • T1's sound better by a hair. T3's can do more (obviously). I have the T1's but I'd still like a set of T3's. If you never had a set of T1's and want that sound the T3's do a fantastic job of delivering the Moog bass sound. T3's look good but I love the way the backside of the T1's look with the classic Moog logo.

  • I agree. The T1 does sound a little warmer and juicy! I had a heck of a time keeping the contacts clean back in the 80's. It would also drift sharp a bit. It made sound men tremble with fear when I walked into a club with that monster.

  • @leftygeezer Not this soundman! I own a set of 4 LABhorn subwoofers. I would just die to get a chance to hear some Taurus (I,II or III) pedals through my PA. I have a ton of synth plug-ins but they never have that fullness the real analog stuff has. Maybe when the plugs get up to 192k at 64bit.....

  • I happily own a Taurus III... I wonder if this was a fair enough comparison??? The Taurus I is sounding fatter than the Taurus III almost all the time, almost as if the Taurus III has had some cuts on the very low-end frequencies... Especially on Reso Bass, at 1:37, it's very noticeable there.

  • @MagellanOfBass

the same mixer, settings and audio recording, the T1 is also calibrated

  • @retrosound72 thanks for info dude.... I guess they DO sound quite different.... I wonder if the T3 can be tweaked to get that extra low end like the T1? Have you tried?

  • @MagellanOfBass

the sound is really different, but no better or worst. the T3 sound is more modern like the Voyager and Little Phatty, the T1 sound is more raw like the Vintage Moog synths.

the biggest difference is , the T1 has linear VCO´s and the T3 exponential VCO´s

  • @retrosound72 The main thing I wonder is whether or not the Taurus 3 might end up sounding like a Taurus 1, after it has had 30 years to age...like the Taurus 1 already has! I'd love to own a Taurus 3 so I can find out after a few years.

  • @retrosound72 & @MagellanOfBas:

I would assume there are more factors than just the units respective engines... the output on the T3 could be different and more modern... which could be an issue with impedance differences or gain differences, etc.

Question, what output are you using on the T3? the Hi or Lo impedance?

  • noticed that the filter pedal is all the way up on your Taurus 1 and only about 1/3 up on the Taurus 3. that definitely effects the presets. how do you feel about the two? i am currently selling my 1 to buy a 3. as painful as it is, i'm a touring musician and need a reliable instrument.

  • @bellurypants

I have tested both over 2 weeks. I think it is a matter of taste what sound you like. The Taurus 3 sound more clean and modern with Midi , a cool Arpeggiator and more presets, the T1 sound more raw and and more deep. I like the T1 more.

  • i dont want be an ideot but, i reahced the same sound with the 3xOsc in FL Studio.

For the analog sound, just define de Osc a little bit, but anyway. i'm lookwing forward to buy a prophet'08, do someone have any suggstions?

  • I think by body is resonating.

  • they sound different, could not say that one of them sounds better than the other.

  • too bad my garbage can doesn't make those sounds when i use the foot lever. do you do any trashcan modifications? moog-bin cross-breeding? maybe make the knob/handle on top to control freq env :)

  • no way, moog foot synths? damn, never even heard of these before. they look like cousins of the Hoover vacuum!! lol so cool

  • @MosesHightower listen to some RUSH, and you'll hear em.

  • @mokuchley

the sound is a bit different, the old one is more raw and powerful, but the T3 has the arpeggiator, Lfo and Midi

  • The only diff I hear is the original has a wee bit more phasing between finely tuned unison oscillators, that discrete mixing tends to bring out.

However, your Taurus 3 appears to have some kind of droning higher pitched sound mixed in pre-filter. Dunno if that was intentional. They both sound great!

  • i've heard the new one in person and it's HUGE

saying the old one's fatter is totally splitting hairs - a 1dB nudge on an EQ erases any difference/perception

  • people keep going on about which on is better,

    isn't 'better' really subjective?

I think Moog have done an amazing job on the new Taurus III bringing it up to modern specifications and maintaining the legacy of the sound

  • I have to say the T1 sounds bigger deeper and more analog, especially with the Reso Bass. It almost sounds like they are filtering the sub 20ish HZ on the new T3. Yes the T3 sounds more transient but it does have that modern day sterile sound in my opinion.

  • Cool (:

  • From this short demo, I have to say Moog did a great job! The Taurus 3 has al the fatness and warmth of the original. The sound is a little different from the Taurus 1, but certainly not less great.

  • It seems to me that your T 1's filter is too dull...out of calibration, perhaps?

  • @Voltor07

The T1 is calibrated and serviced

  • my god this sounds so damn great

  • Seems like the T1 has less higher frequencies in the sound, not quite as bright. That or Moog didn't do such a great job of replicating presets? Good job, hope to see more comparisons.

  • This may be the only video where someone actually played it with there feet I've seen . For my vote the T3 sounds the best , but they both sound pretty close and obviously the T! may suffer from age .

  • excellent vid - ive never seen those before, quite interesting to see

  • hehe so kann man sich also das geld für den statiker sparen... alo leute eine investition für die zukunft :-D

  • You can hear a difference, the resobass isn't quite like the original but isn't bad. Further tweaking will make the T3 an awesome pedal.

  • I think this needs to be a bit more rigorous to be a fair comparision:

    1. Has the T1 been serviced/recapped/calibrated (some sound change will occur due to age anyway)?

    2. Did you use the stock factory presets? Moog are tweaking these as they shipped with the wrong Beat settings on the classic sounds. You can tweak them closer yourselves though.

    3. Reso Bass is a variable preset on the T1, the T3 does not have the same parameter access so it's difficult to know how well you matched them.

  • @swisstoni69

This is no competition, which Taurus is better. Yes, the T1 is calibrated and serviced.

The sound is a bit different, not only the presets. The sound of the old T1 is more raw and the T3 more clean. Its a matter of taste what sound any like more.

    I like both versions.

  • I'm amazed, I actually liked the sound of the new Taurus better.

PS> Retrosound72, you are one lucky guy ;)

  • @destructorbeam

the taurus 1 has 3 unchangeable presets and one variable presets, the T3 has these 3 presets and more ram memory sounds.

the Taurus 1 presets are legendary and very important for the progressive rock in the 70s like Genesis, Yes ....

  • It's remarkable how well the Taurus 3 captures the essence of the original. They did a really good job. Is it the same? better? worse? Who knows, it's a youtube video. it's on your computer speakers. how can you tell? All I can tell is that they both sound great in the video, and I KNOW what Taurus 1 sounds like. Thanks Marko for the post! Now I have to buy one, and it's all your fault! ; )

  • @ShadowOpsProject

    :) thank you

  • Is this like what Geddy lee and Alex used in Rush?

  • @afimearts

    yes the Taurus 1

  • @retrosound72 Thank-you for posting these great video's.

  • The TONE is nearly identical to both synths. However, the Taurus I has a different analog grit than the Taurus III in my opinion. It boils down to this: Both are made by the same company with the same components and circuitry. The difference between the I and III would probably be the same between two III's or two I's! GOOD video!

  • Such a crunchy sounding instrument, I love it :D

  • Taurus 1 does it for me.

  • @ZeroCool1971

    mach ich!

    danke

  • Where can I finde these synths? I'd like to buy one maybe as a starter to play. I love your videos too!

  • @videodude4

The new Taurus 3 can you buy.

  • Great sounds from Great synthesizers

  • cool demo marko there very diffrent from each other :)

  • @soundmanhaven1

    thank you :)

  • heavy tunes :) good !!!

  • @031doolittle

    thx :)

  • BTW, this is Gregsynth! LOL

  • This kinda reminds me of the whole "Minimoog vs the Moog Voyager" debate: Both sound very similar and the newer synth is almost identical--but the original has that "phat" sound you can't 100% emulate!

  • Thanks for this. There aren't too many T3 videos yet.

    Rhythmicons

  • Got to get one soon....or both....!

  • Tolles Video!

  • Is it just me, or does the Taurus 1 sound better?

  • @mikeycomputer

    its just different...

  • excellent!

  • @MikaTechnika

    thank you

  • The old one sounds the best I think... but then again - its all a matter of taste :=)

  • super... ;-)

  • @sloneczkoist

    thx a lot :)

  • jaja, immer fein die nachbarn ärgern. ;D

  • @unknowntomillions

dafür ist das Teil gemacht ;)

  • great demo! :) keep em coming!

  • @kingofkeyboards

    thanks :)

  • In the first preset it sounds like the Taurus 3 oscillators are more detuned than the Taurus 1.

Muss jeder halt schauen, welche Klangcharakteristik man bevorzugt. Beide Geräte sind auf ihre Art super.

  • they are cool looking things
