  • I've been a fan of Ricky and Kentucky Thunder for a few years now. This old vid just crossed my mind after 27 years. To jump on the youtube and find it is too amazing. You guys are the best. Ray's solo is something special.

  • Love this video! I worked with Bobby Hicks in a band here in Reno in the early 70's.

  • This is just an awesome song with some awesome pickin! I love it!

  • I love this vid. How can you NOT love this? All band members are so on it.

  • Is that Bobby Hicks playing rhythm guitar?

  • @smoothprox

It is...Damn Bobby Hicks is cool as hell....Check out my vids to see Bobby today.

  • Awesome playing ray, proud to be your cousin :)

  • The real deal . Ricky and the whole band .

    " Musicianship " .

  • Ray Flacke is the badest sob that ever shit "tween a pair of boots!!! AWESOME You can tell where Brent mason and Paisley got some of their licks...

    TEX

  • @txdaddad Yeah, but Ray got his licks and the B-bender from Clarence White!

  • @smoothprox

What B bender?? That tele don't have one!

  • @smoothprox

What B bender?? I've played that Telecaster and it doesn't have one!

And as far inspiration is concerned, that came from Albert Lee and James Burton, not Clarence White.

  • WOW - Ray Flacke smoked it!

  • Thanks for putting this one up. I remember watching this live on Austin City Limits - I think it was around 1980. That was a real good band he had back then. It was one hour of excellent musicianship. I was hoping I'd somehow get to watch this cut again someday before I croak..

  • When this was first on the radio I thought it was called "Don't Eat a Fuzzy Raisin" !! LOL!

  • @kittyat6 LOL! You made me laugh hard at that one. Too funny!

  • Loved it tks for vid

  • Brings back memories,..........."THANK YOU"!!

  • I like this Ricky Skaggs song, especially the musical interludes when Ricky wasn't singing, eith the piano player and the guitarists playing, I thought that was cool to listen to.

  • well they don't call him "Picky Ricky" for nothing lol great song good guitar work

  • Ray Flacke is awesome!

  • I got to see this guy a couple of times at Ponderosa Park in Salem, OH as a kid. Not such a big fan of him now but I loved early to mid 80's Ricky Skaggs.

  • I've been playing almost 40 years and Ray Flacke continues to amaze me! The guy smokes!

  • Good old Ray. Great to see a good ol' London boy showing the rednecks how to play hot Tele!

  • Ray Flacke.

  • this was Ricky's Super pickers from the 80's:

    Guitar : Ray

    Piano : Micki Merritt

    Drum's : Rodney Price

    R Guitar: Bobby Hicks

    Bass : Jessie Chambers

One of the greats bands of our time.....Very talented group.

  • I hung out with Rodney back a few months ago. still the great player he's always been

  • one of my favs , go Ray!

  • The nut bend killed me!!!

  • okbouncer...that bend sends me into space everytime i hear it!

  • BigBoiJC I hear ya brother!!!

  • Smokin' tele! Good job Ray!

  • good lord,this GREAT STUFF,I'm A BOUNCING!!SHIRLEY>>>>>>>>>>.'B'

  • Rainman!...smokin the tele!

  • I like the version of this song that he did on the Live In London alubm with Elvis Castello

  • Ray Flacke! His thrilling, risky maneuvers make my ears spin with delight.

  • i'd like to see a video of that!

  • hey... a little suprise for all you flacke fans...I just found out that ray actually has this video linked to his myspace page!

  • I just checked it out and it's great! Thanks for the tip.

  • I put up a video of a Ray Flacke song as a reply to this video, but I guess the owner didn't like that idea. It would have shows just how great as guitar player he is. While I don't like the term "Fulanito is the best whatever", Ray is definitely my favorite guitar player of all time.

  • The owner of the video? What was the performance?

  • It wasn't a video of a live performance, it was just a song off of his CD, "Untitled Island", I put some photos of Ray, because I don't have any actual video. I tried to post it as a reply to your video here, and I got the message saying it had to have your ok first, and it never appeared, so...

If you go to my YouTube page, it's Squeeze The Weasel.

  • Oh, I see. Well, I think Youtube has to maintain some control over links to other addresses. I didn't think that applied to other youtube links. But thanks and I will check it out!

  • Hi, I guess I'm kinda confused here. When I had my other acct., I would reply to some videos with the "Post A Video Response" feature. Most would have it set where the video reaponse would just appear. I guess there's an option where the owner of the original vid can screen them first - which is what I figured happened when I tried to post one here. Sounds like you weren't even aware that I tried to do that???

  • No. but I am not a very proficient you tuber.

Sorry I can't offer any help......

  • Ok, I get it now :) . My apologies for thinking that it was you who prevented me from posting my video as a response.

  • love this video one of my all time favourites.ricky skaggs is great but ray flacke is absolutely the best there is bar none.

  • I think Kenny Vaughan would have to disagree!!!

  • i still say ricky skaggs is the better guitar player

  • oh boy, ray flacke!!! I remember learning my first serious country lixx by watching ray's instructional videos in the mid '80s. Wow!!

  • Such sweet memories of growing up in my small town and watching Austin City Limits on the weekend. I remember this performance.

    Thanks for posting!

  • Ah, Ray Flacke! Totally awesome. Ricky's sound never was the same after Ray left. Does anybody know where Ray is today, and what he is doing? Is he still in Nashville?

  • Last i saw Ray he was working for Terry Clark but that was some time ago. he still looked the same (plus a gray stubble).

  • He has a great MySpace page where you can purchase his original recordings and some cool merchandise. I especially like the torment the Drummer T-Shirt.

  • Ray Flacke!!

  • Thanks so much for posting this, really enjoyed it. I've worked with pickers like Brent Mason and Albert Lee but indeed, Ray Flacke's playing is absolutely awesome!

  • One of the greatest songs ever! Ricky Skaggs is so talented! This whole band is compiled of the greatest musicians on the planet! Go Ray Flacke!!! This is what music sounds like when you're having fun, and it comes from within.

  • Everything about this song rocks! ...from Skaggs' hillbilly twang and shrunken telecaster to Ray Flacke's incredible solo beginning at 2:48. Great video!

  • that's not a telecaster..it's actually a cross between a tele and a mandolin. it's called a Mandocaster. it's played like a five string mandolin but with the tele look and sound.

  • Thanks for the info on the Mandocaster. I didn't know they existed and I never bothered to count the strings!

  • it's alright...camera really was never close enough!

  • I wondered what that little instrument was. Mandocaster is cool. I thought it was an electric mandolin or just a small electric guitar.

  • RAY FLACKE!!!

  • yeh ha

  • Thank you thank you thank you! I have been looking for this rendition for months.

  • RIP Mickey Merritt (Piano). we will meet again brother

  • Ray Flacke is a god...Thanks for posting this. Been looking for this video since I saw it on Austin City Limits in the 80s.

  • great to see this video with Ricky, Bruce, Bobby, Ray, Rodney and of course who could forget Jesse Chambers back there on bass?

  • and I failed to mention (sorry about that) the great piano player Mickey Merrit

  • Bruce Bouton is now playin' steel guitar with Reba McEntire and he's also a studio steel guitarist. All the guys in the band and Ricky himself are great musicians.

  • i've known that he was aa studio steel player...forgot he was with Reba. do you know him?

  • Actually, Bruce is a buddy of mine. I'm a steel guitarist too, and Bruce and I got in touch through e-mail a few years ago. I think it was in this video where I saw a steel guitar for the first time when I was a kid.

  • that's great man! i haven't talked to bruce since his days of working for Ricky. My dad is the bass player in this video...that's how i know bruce
