  • Very Nice ;) :p hum !

  • "Anything you buy at an American grocery store is a sweet potato."

  • I love the nasal way he says "tangy" and "caramelized" hahaha I love Chef John!

  • Made this for Thanksgiving. Everyone LOVED it. No leftovers :-) Much better than the super sweet gut bomb variety.

  • Oh yum! I'll try this too..thanks.

  • This is so exciting to see b/c I hate the traditional marshmallow-topped-too-sweet version of sweet potato and this looks so much more palatable. Thanks chef john! Wish I had seen this before thanksgiving tho...

  • da puhtaytuh is a kumerah...

  • I like how you say potato like "puh-tay-tah." Hehe. I'm from NY and I say it like "puh-tay-toe." Nice recipe, it looks scrummy. :)

  • Best sweet potato dish ever!!! I made this for my boyfriend and I along with the French onion green bean casserole for Thanksgiving. Absolutely amazing recipes. Thank you John!!

  • Chef John, I made this for a friend's Thanksgiving dinner. It was truly magnificent and everyone loved it. Awkward moment was when the Jewish household found out I put milk and butter in it. Good lesson for me!

  • is it casserole or caserolle?

  • Great, great, great recipe, Chef John. Because of nut allergies in my family, I substituted some coarsely ground ginger snaps (not too sweet either) for the crust, and it was awesome!

  • lol "maple serp" derp

  • Wow, thanks for this recipe. Everyone loved it. My husband NEVER eats sweet potatoes and he enjoyed this dish. Also did the green bean casserole dish. Work, but great for us gluten free folk. I used GF flour mix to make the sauce. Came out great.

  • This was a complete hit! Everyone loved it. There wasn't more than a large spoonful left over. Even I ate it... and I hate sweet potatoes. I'm just about to email the recipe to three of my guests.

  • I made this! It tasted delicious.

I didn't do the pistachio crust though, I stuck with my marshmallows; which made it even more delicious! ;]

Chef John, can we put both toppings?

  • tried this recipe for thanksgiving yesterday and it came out delicious. no doubt one of the best if not the best dish yesterday. pistachio crust was absolutely amazing.

  • I made this for Thanksgiving yesterday. Set up my laptop on the countertop and cooked right along with you. I have to say it was PERFECT. Everyone loved it, even the little kids who at first refused to eat anything called a sweetpotato.

Chef John you made our Thanksgiving! Thank you so much!

  • Chef John, this was so good!

  • So all I can say is, Chef John, you are my cooking role model. I made this recipe with slightly more syrup and the results were outstanding. I brought it to church for people who cant afford thanksgiving and everybody was complimenting me the casserole. They asked how I can cook this good and told them to search youtube for "Foodwishes". Whenever I cook, I go to your website. I am 19 and people are surprised by how good the food is. Thank you Chef John.

  • I just made this for Thanksgiving and it's wonderful! Thanks so much!

  • My brother is allergic to nuts. I want to make this, but the pistachios are going to be a problem. Do you have any suggestions for what I can use instead for the crust?

  • Wow I made this a day early it is so good it will not your socks off.

  • Boiling the sweet potatoes now!

  • My grandma makes hers with sugar free marshmallows and syrup and, no joke, it's the best thing on earth.

  • Could I use maple instead of brown sugar for the topping? And replace the flour with flax seed meal?

  • I made it tonight for our pre-thanksgivning-Thanksgiving-dinner. It was the total score! Everyone loved it. This will probably become a regular holiday addition :) Thank you

  • No ol' tappa tappa :/

  • will there be any difference if i use dark brown sugar?

  • my mother decided to make a sweet potato casserole once, and neither of us could eat it. I dont understand adding sooo much sugar/syrup to them. Maybe I'll try this one. We generally cook slices of the sweet potato in a mixture of OJ and a tiny bit of brown sugar and starch to thicken.. oh and of course butter. It's really good :)

  • You said this is a 2 quart casserole dish? Its so pretty. I always love your white dishes where did you get this one?

  • Comment removed

  • Disgusting sweetness makes it yummy!

  • Oh just YUM! :-)

  • Im bought to make this :)

  • Syrup... sirp?

  • skewer... skyrrr?

  • Chopping those Pistachio nuts would be a pain! Cant i just put the nuts in a zip lock bag and use a meat tenderizer mallet to crush them?

  • He just has to describe at the end of every video how good the dish is :)

  • I didnt have any sweet potatoes or pistachios nuts so i used normal potatoes and walnuts .it sorta tasted like shit

  • @haloscott1809 Nice job stealing a comment from another video. You're so funny.

  • @muncher541 what do you mean i stole a comment i acctually did this

  • I can always see your smiling face every time I heard the word "Enjoy"..

  • I wish my great aunt would make it this way! I don't like the marshmallow topping she uses, and hers it too sweet!!

  • I just made this tonight and it was delicious!! I definitely recommend it!! :D

  • :D

  • Yum! looks delish!

  • Thank you so much for this recipe! I think i will make two, one with pistachios and one with pecans! yayyy..yummy!!

  • why would you put melted butter and butter-milk everywhere. unhealthy and eww..

  • @cartouchator actually milk and butter ARE healthy when included in moderation. It certainly beats out partially hydrogenated vegetable oil by a LONG shot. in terms of health Not only do milk products provide valuable calcium and vitamin D, but your body actually needs some fat in order to work properly. I use skim or 1% milk when I cook so that the fat content overall is less while the nutritional value remains high.

  • @cartouchator Buttermilk is actually considered healthier than real milk; usually it has very little fat (because it was removed to make butter) and it's high in lactic acid, making it much easier on the digestive system than milk. It's also high in nutrients like Vitamin B12 and calcium. As for butter well...I use a lot of olive oil as a butter-alternative personally. But it's true that in moderate amounts, butter has health benefits too.

  • This looks so delish. But those strings in there are a turn off for me. :-(

  • THANKYOU! i hate the super sweet and marshmallows!!!

  • Wait, what...do people...do people put marshmallows on this?

    ... I don't get it.

  • @ubermystic sadly, yes. Growing up my school cafeteria always added TONS of brown sugar and marshmallows to it. I actually thought I hated sweet potatoes because of it. It wasn't until I tried plain mashed sweet potatoes at a fancy restaurant as an adult that I realized it was the way they were prepared that had me thinking they were sickly sweet.

  • Great Video Laura! I will definitely make this one!

  • looks f'ing amazing

  • "so don't believe the hype": lmfao--you slay me! Love you lots!

  • "dictator "--lol!!!

  • Mmm Kumara!!

  • Looks great, but do you ever do any Vegan versions???

  • 4.29. sack focus puller.

  • yumm looks great

  • Muah

  • I'm planning on using a whole butternut squash instead of sweet potatoes. Hope it turnes out ok...

  • Think I try this with a walnut topping and a pecan topping on another. YUM!

  • Wonderful!! Your family is so lucky ^_^

  • Any suggestions for an alternate to the pistachios for folks with tree nut allergies? Love the videos, btw!

  • well i was going to make a candied sweet potato pie i seen i a magazine now you post this recipe chef John!! lol what to do what to do!! thanks for sharing either ways!!

  • Chef John, I am abolutely amazed at boiling the sweet potatoes instead of roasting them in the oven. Rubbing the sweet potatoes with olive oil and cooking them in the oven brings out their natural sweetness, are very easy to peel and are fork mash tender when done. All together much less work and a tastier result. Cheers! I'm going to try the pistachio topping though. Looks yummy!

  • @redherringbone other than when you boil them with salt...really brings out the natural flavor and of course you have just used up olive oil and still have to peel..and still have to wait for them to cool down to do that peeling and then you have the pan that is to be cleaned ...and....and...no I think his way is way better...sorry good thoughts though!!

  • Looks awesome!

  • Speaking of Thanksgiving side dishes...Do you have a recipe for Green Bean Casserole that isn't vile? I looking for a version that uses shallots instead of onions, and that does NOT have a can of soup in it, but I'm not having much luck.

  • I have to ask; is this a dessert? I'm from another part of the world, where sweet potatoes are not very common.

  • @kkjelt Nope. It's a side. Even the horribly sweet marshmallow variety is considered a side here in the South.

  • @eicebleu Ok, thanks. I was just wondering, as it has to be very sweet. Thanks for your reply. :)

  • Chef John, I live in the San Francisco Bay Area. Can I visit you and taste test all your foods, please?:-)

  • I think I'm going to do this with Butternut Squash and Pecans instead... That's all I have left, I ate my sweet potatoes and pistachios hahaha

  • My Japanese mother-in-law has just given me a load of sweet potatoes which I couldn't think what to do with. Trust Chef John to provide the answer! Yummo.

  • My house smells like Chef Johns house,,,did your slow cooker pot roast today! It was soooooooo good ,,thanks chef

  • Doing this for sure!!!

    Thanks!

  • 2:45 ... I'd tap that !

  • So eh, is this a dessert or what? Loads of sugar and stuff in it, so I don't know how well it would work as an actual side?

  • dictator, hahahahahahaa

  • I can't stand sweet potatoes, but my in-laws love them. This is what I'm serving this year! Keep your fingers crossed. :D

  • Is this a dessert or a side dish?

  • @sashant1018 A side dish, I'd think, but I'd probably eat this as a main course if I could, lol. :D

  • My 3-year-old daughter watched this with me n at the end she said "mmmmmmmmmmm mommy u want some? I want some" I guess now I have to make it :)

  • @Lizz2128

It means you BOTH have to make it! :)

  • That look yummy

  • Needs more cayenne!

  • Yuuuuuuuuum!

  • Maple serp!

  • i was thinking that thanksgiving passed already and then i realized americans celebrate it in november

  • Thats pretty fantastic.

  • im not from america. but theres sweet potato where im from. do you eat this as a dessert?

  • @darrylee No its a main course vegetable, have just like ordinary potato

  • @darrylee yes

  • @bubblemuffinxp Never trust a skinny cook. ;P

  • Maple Serp!

  • I like baking my potatoes before making the casserole :P I think it makes it taste better.

  • that was a SPOON-FULL? You must be on a diet, Chef

  • Sweet potatoes makes us fart.. a lot... it's different from the usual fart...

  • @aHGirlL but its a sweet fart so its ok lol

  • As a kid, I hated sweet potatoes. As an adult, I love them. YUM!

  • is this a dessert?

  • @acmulhern nope its a side dish

  • i love the drums for effect!!!!!

  • this looks great!!! what a turn on when a guy can cook!!!!! lol

  • OUFFFFF! Sooooooooo delicious!!!!!

  • can we replace the maple syrup with honey?

  • TWO videos from Chef John on ONE day?! So one was a re-post but damn, how awesome!

  • Chef John Marry Me this looks so yummy

  • but yams (orange skinned ones no the asian purple ones) are nothing like sweet potaties (redish). i am confused. but i love yeams fried in butter!

  • dicTATOR HEHEHEHEHE

  • R.I.P. battery... we will always remember you as Chef John's trusty, good, old battery... );

  • Dear Chef John, I always wonder, who eats the food after you cook them?

  • @neopc14 Probably his family

  • @neopc14 his wife.... and himself

  • @neopc14 he eats it with his wife michelle most of time...

  • @neopc14 his family..

  • @neopc14 He and his wife

  • Yuck, marshmallows and sweet potatoes (no offense) sounds about as disgusting as a tuna and banana sandwich.

  • please kidnap me.

  • @robofu12 Ok, where do you live?.

  • @Cytacon its a joke bro!!! :D

  • Wow sounds like a great recipe for something different I am so gonna make this for thanksgiving this year, thank you!

  • DICK TATER LOOOOOLLZOORRR omfg lolllingingingingingig

  • I want to know why they call sweet potatoes yams

  • It looks awesome, but I broke a crown on a Pistachio last week :(

  • What kind of peeler is that!? It makes peeling look easy!

  • @JimbobOMG It's called a Y-peeler. You can find them in any store, they're awesome.

  • yummmm <3

  • @funkyliciousgal08 he said elements

  • hmmm chef johns been making alot more vids seen he was aquirred by allrecipes....

  • you put cayenne in EVERYTHING.

  • WHAT ALMONDS DO U MEAN at 1:50?

  • Sweet potatah aayannd maple srup.

  • Can I use a Walnut crust with brown sugar?

  • @tiger34kin Maybe pecan would be brighter than walnut?

  • COME ON!!!! THOSE ARE YAMS YOU ARE COOKING WITH! QUIT DECEIVING THE VIEWERS! SWEET POTATOES ARE BROWN ON THE OUTSIDE AND YELLOW ON THE INSIDE!!! THEY ARE NOT THE SAME!!!!!

  • @OrangeCountyBeauty No, those are sweet potatoes. Look it up, they are labeled yams to tell difference between the firmness but it's you're actually eating a different type of sweet potato, not yams. Yams are native in Africa and the taste COMPLETELY DIFFERENT from what we Americans call "yams".

  • Awesome dish

  • I had diarrhea once and it looked like that.

  • chef john, please tell people that sweet potatoes are NOT yams. it's ludicrous

  • what camera do you use?

  • i don't get Christmas food....fruity salty sweet spicy....i don't get it

  • maple serp?

  • UGhhhh....I hate marshmellows in my yams!

  • @dodoinurpants I agree. Marshmallows covering yams, is a like a bra covering a sweet pair of yabbos!

  • Question, my friend wants me to make this, I tried to convince her to try the Pistaschio crust, but she insisted she'd rather not...so would another nut work okay? Like a Walnut or Brazilian nut for instance?

  • so is this a desert or a savoury? or both?

  • @xraygegz5 This is not a desert its usually served as a sweet/savoury side dish along with the rest of your meal.

  • can you sub pistachios for anything

  • @kaitybby123 I think pegans would be actually better than pistachios or maybe even pumkin seeds.

  • As long as it tastes good, it's not cheating. ;)

  • my mouth is literally watering... :P

  • Too pedestrian recipe not worth of my time.

  • @henrysinaga Wouldn't that be "not worthy of my time"?

  • @kyuutatsu typo

  • In your mashed potato video you said to cut the potato in half rather than in chunks. -- You said it would cook more evenly, which seemed to be true when I tried the (delicious) recipe. Is there a reason why you chose chunks here?

  • @jcootch the idea of that video was, what i believe, to achieve perfect, lump-free fluffy mashed potato, here he is baking it and mixing it with a lot of wet ingredients so i imagine the idea is kinda invalid in this recipe :)

  • heh, dick tater

  • They weren't the same size. the pieces in the middle were at least twice as big as the end pieces. (Place Snare drum sound here).

  • Looks great to me

  • Pistachio is nasty

  • your battery didn't die , it orgasmed
