Jepet - he is allowed to be racist to the French. 1. It is in his freedom and human rights to say wants. 2. Britain/England was at war with France for 1500 years ( the reason I wrote England was because Britain did not become one until 1707 - the union act. )
Kasoner18 - it is called tradition, as the British colonised Canada they wear they uniforms of the British army and they swear allegiance to the Queen and her empire and Commonwealth
We should be a republic. Anything less is an insult to democracy. Plain and simple. And let's get some better hats for crying out loud, those are rediculously British. The only Canadian parts of this parade are the heros wearing the uniforms.
the reason the british get along with auzies, kiwis and canadians is because there not all full of themselves and are willing to respect others respect is due to all of our allies but more to our true connections
Thanks breakdown. It sure would be great if all of NATO would carry the same weapon. I am not sure if the Brit's use a 5.56mm or if their weapon fires a smaller round? I know the French fire something on the smaller side. I sure miss the old 7.62 M-14 and the Brit's used the FN-FAL. That was a great weapon if you didn't use full auto.
@rctsos A Canadian is an American who didn't have the balls to kick the Limeys out. A Brit that I worked with, told me that when a Canadian is in London he tries to act like a cowboy, and when in Texas, he tries to act like his Lordship! We kicked out many of our Tories (traitors!) to Canada. Good riddance to bad garbage!
french and british come together, as it should be in canada. i am scottish and have relations in canada. if you are french you might have relations in canada also. they seem to be getting on ok. or we could go down the eastern european route where every village is a principality. i dont think we want to do that.
I was in the Canadian Army over 50 years ago, and am an Englishman, been in the US 40 years. The "reds" were NOT worn prior to a Canadian Identity crisis afer the FLQ terrorist attacks , mainly in Quebec. The Van Doos wearing reds? Richelieu must be rolloing in his grave. Whats with this longer tunic cut ? Looks like something froma Hollywood skit.
Good show though, brings the tourists in. But how about a REALLY Canadian uniform, like the RCMP.The RCMP stetson was an Army hat first.
As a Canadian, I am proud of our ties with the British Commonwealth. It hasn't always been easy or even good at times, but it's who we are, after all, most traditions bring people together. Some people say they have no use for it, which just means that Canada has changed alot in the last 70 years or so. It should serve as a reminder of how a large country with a relatively small population has achieved so much for the world.
MASTA...learn some history. The uniform is of the ROYAL 22nd Regiment. The title, Royal, being conferred by the Queen of Canada. Yes, she's also our queen. It is also not a typical scarlet, nor a typical bearskin, as they are not a Guards regiment, but you knew that right? Canada SHARES many traditions with Britain, including military traditions. Most Canadians are proud of their history, but then we come across gits like you.
Most countries with ties to the United Kingdom borrow customs. The U.S. Marine band has red jackets, the Army drum major use bearskin hats, the U.S. Army even has bagpipes. It's part of the tradition of many nations.
Your « interesting historical fact » is crap, just like you. Yes, weak and stupid you are indeed.
The name Canada comes from the Huron-Iroquois word « Kanata » which means « village ». It was used to place of Stadacona, the future location of Quebec City.
Back in the 80's I was posted with 2RCR (when they were part of 5 Bgde). When we went to parades in Valcatraz it was such a hoot! The 2RCR RSM would be freaking out because he could not do a proper sizing..... he had to put all the people who understood french in the centre rank..... they would interpret the words of command for the rest of us.
it is a canadian uniform but it is based on the guards uniform from the british army..and of course the bear skins!!but then they were stolen from the french at waterloo..lol
I don't think you'll find a Grenadier who would agree with you on the reason behind their wearing of the bearskin or it being classed as 'parade dress' as it was worn in the Crimean and specifically the battle of Alma.
There's no need to be facetious. The point in discussion was the manner in which the Bearskin was awarded. The body from which they were taken is in dispute but the bearskin caps are worn in reverence of a particular event in the battle, namely the Guards defeat of the French Chasseurs and the taking of their bearskins.
At Waterloo when the Prussians arrived Napoleon sent his Imperial Guard to break the increasingly-frail British line. There's now some scepticism to which units it was but the original story goes that Napoleon's Grenadier Guards (who wore the bearskins and had never been broken) were beaten by the 1st of Foot, who in honour of this were awarded the title and the bearskin caps. So stolen and rewarded are both appropriate I suppose.
Wrong. The ENGLISH court spoke Anglo-Norman for about 200 years not 800. No such thing as the 'French' or 'France' as we know it back then thus saying they spoke French makes no sense at all.
That's not what I meant. Every noble in Europe spoke french as a matter of course, often much better than their local language. Some couldn't even write in their supposedly native language.
Since nobility made up the bulk of the officers corps, there must have been many excellent French speakers in there.
That wouldn't make them French or a foreign bocdy, just like fracophone Canadians shouldn't be considered that.
Bah, you should consider it an honour that you have French-speaking brothers-in-arms fighting under your queen's banner, instead of complaining about it.
Well, incase you havent noticed, us brits and the french have a lil bit of rival history going on :P But im happy with all our allies, its just ...strange.
YOU ARE ALL MISSING THE POINT...Thank God you can argue about whether Europeans spoke French or not... Its better to worry about that, than say, a real issue like... The rise of Islamic fundamentalism... WAR is here, where do you stand?
Nope im pretty sure that design of uniform is very similair, almost identical to the british uniform....its just strange seeing people in british uniforms speaking french. And before another person tells me there allies, i dont care lol, 100 years of war, its just weird.
The R22eR was first founded in 1914 for all of the man who spoken french. Its not that we force the man to speak french, but its for those who speak french, a soldier could work all his life in french. And by the way, you see that they are dress in red because the R22eR are affiliated with the Royal Welch Fusiliers in england. And the hat, come from the emperial guard of napoleon.
People! The Regiment is the Royal 22nd, a Senior Regiment in the Canadian Forces. RCR, Central Canada, PPCLI, Western Canada and then the Royal 22nd, Quebec. The main language in Quebec is French, therefore this Regiment is French Speaking.
I am not sure I understand why you think it is laughable? I believe this is the Royal 22nd Regiment and I believe that traditionally it has always been a Quebec based regiment. The blood that Canadian Army soldiers have shed across the globe comes from Quebecois as well as Canadians of Scottish, English and Irish descent as well as thousands from other ethnic backgrounds.
Yes, the Quebec Citadel is currently manned by the R22eR but the unit itself was not established until the beginning of WWI. The soldiers at the citadel are reenacting historical British units though which manned the Citadel until the withdrawal of the British Army throughout Canada starting after 1867. So from a purely historical representation standpoint, using French commands is a slight inaccuracy. I wont deride the contributions made by French-Canadians in combat, but I do laugh at their...
incessant need to assert their language whenever possible. Being a current member of the Canadian Army, I feel I have somewhat of a valid opinion on the subject.
While I respect your opinion I never thought of the R22eR as "reenacting" any unit as I thought other units in the Canadian Army also utilised bear skin caps and scarlet tunics.
It must be a difficult situation to have to be "forced" to use the French language in an army that really does not have any historical roots in Francophone culture. (cont'd)
Don't forget though that a historical precedent does exist for British or Imperial units to utilize their native tongue. The present Royal Irish Regiments motto "Faugh A Ballagh" (Clear the Way!) or the Gordon Highlanders "Bydand" (Steadfast!) Submitted with Respect and thanks for your service.
You know zip about the Canadian Military or Canadian History, and you state that you're in the Forces, BS. What Regiment or branch of the Forces? I don't think the R22R, RCR or the PPCLI are reenacting in Afganistan.
I find it more than a little laughable when you have Quebecois representing historical British units...at least they could use English commands instead of French.
@arsenaljsutliffuk Not me. I am pretty content with the commonwealth and Great Britain.
