Do any synth/keyboard players know the name of the synth pad sound they're using (if it has a universally known name)? I've heard it many songs over the years, and I would like to know so I can use it in the future! :)
At the end of my day, when I have done everything I can think of for my children, when finally all of them are sleeping, and some needed extra food,or their shirt ironed,or just someone to listen and I did it all and tried to dream up other things to make their day fun,I come here and I dedicate this song to them...Its the end of my day, like a prayer.
this is my favorite video rendition of the several I've seen...edited brilliantly to really accenuate Shawn's natural, pure beauty and presence...my new all-time favorite image occurs at 2 min. 20 secs..vintage Shawn Colvin...the most beautiful woman I've ever seen but when you feel her "presence" that's when it hits you...I got a lethal dose instantly and I've been bobbin' around in her magnetosphere ever since wondering if she ever comes to visit her captives...still...it's very homey in here
an angel in the flesh, from the start - shawn colvin knows precisely and exactly what to say and how to say it in the most hauntingly beautiful and straight-forward way imaginable - and absolute gem, under-appreciate but so loved by so many of us...
another great song !!! yes, it makes me sick too that great musicians like Shawn aren't more known... and we're always subjected to the mindless herds of morons who churn out their inane and numbnuts crap ... one day soon things will change , i have faith :-)
One of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. I first heard it being played in the background of a scene on "One Life to Live" in the 1990's. It was Max and Luna's song. Beautiful song, beautiful voice, and a beautiful meaning!!!
I love it that two of my most favorite performers have worked and sung together. I'm talking about alison krauss. She even covered this song on her third album. It's done in Krauss's bluegrass style and lacks the soul of this recording but it makes up for it in an upbeat, whistful kinda way. Worth checking out!
I just saw Shawn perform in a very small Vermont theater in front of less than 200 people on a cold March night. What a fabulously pure voice! She sang/played an incredible adaptation of Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" that revealed just another great talent of this fine artist. A tremendous evening with a wonderful musician!
I have heard this song many many times, but had no idea that Shawn Colvin was the original composer to it. Wow. I would love to hear some artists today cover this, that's for sure.
@Grapes428 Noooo, I never want anyone to cover this. This was a lullaby to her child that she was kind enough to share with the rest of us. No covers, no one else could do it justice.
Being a guy, I hate to admit this. Going thru a divorce when Fat City came out, this song kept me away from the edge. She's great...I guess that when you grow up in South Dakota, your mind fills up with images the landscape doesn't provide.
Ah...glad I found this video. I love this song, and the video seems to better match the song's sonic beauty with beautiful imagery and Shawn's beauty.
@fubarcat50 Great musicians usually are. They don't get HUGE air play because they don't write their songs to conform to the attention span of a gnat that most people have.
@FlyingGuySFO yes, someone who gets the big picture. Music to most people is just background noise or party music, but to people who rely on music throughtout their lives, popular music just does not cut it, most of it is garbage.
@FlyingGuySFO i agree. when you can make millions off the articulate wordings of "i'm hot cause i'm fly, you ain't cause you not..." , one can't expect many REAL musicians to get the recognition they deserve.
@fubarcat50 The contrast isn't between talent, it's between priorities, a talented vocalist like Shawn Colvin writes heartfelt folk music with the occasional pop crossover like "Sunny Came Home" whereas a talented vocalist like Rihanna is produced by a team of individuals that aim at achieving pop success, and so she sacrifices her ability in exchange for fame. Shawn Colvin sacrifices fame for her ability. Granted, I will say that Colson is more respectable, but Rihanna is more earnest.
@fubarcat50 ill say this in todays world Rihanna isnt bad compared to most, with that being said though Shawn Colvin could kick any female vocalist butt from anytime hands down. And this is coming from a kid born in 1990
I have uploaded an 'alternative' mix of this song (without the guitar in the instrumental break) - check out the 'horns' version! LOVE YA SHAWN!!!

Actually there was one. Back in 1994, sung by Faye Wong.
The song title is "Sky". Love that song when I was a kid =)

SC has won a couple of Grammies, but I tend to agree.
I get the impression that the goal for her is just to make the music she wants to make, not be celebrity/brand.
Rihanna's closer to being ProTools assisted burlesque act than a singer.
