the level of hypocrisy and ignorance the media and law enforcement try to put across is appaling..khat is not as addictive as tobacco or alcohol which are all too legal. Khat has the same effect as coffee does..its a stimulant and the insinuation that it has brought about violence is as ignorant as expected of Americans. Somalis and some people from East africa chew this plant culturally and socially just as in the west people drink wine or champagne and most chewers don't even drink alcohol!!

There should be a RATIONAL debate and discussion about Qat. But I do feel that most of the negative aspects - like contamination and gang violence - stem from it being illegal. A blanket prohabition never works so public awareness is also needed.
