Imagine the shock i got when i found out that Maynyard Williams was the son of the actor who played the unforgettable "Greengrass". Over here in Norway, Greengrass will not be forgotten for years to come! My fav. Esc song ever..
I love this song. Awesome vocals and a catchy tune. Totally 80s, totally fantastic. Not sure the song is helped by Maynard doing a Bugs Bunny impression after every bar.lol
It holds up over time, right along with 'J'Aime la Vie' from Belgium and 'Count on Me' from Ireland. They sound just as fantastic now as they did 23 years ago..puts the stuff you hear today to shame.
Agree with you views on Ryder's song holding up over time, but am simply unable to understand your continuing love of the Belgian entry. I teach kids and their voices (squeaky and cute but lacking depth) sound exactly the same as Sandra Kim's does. No maturity in the performance at all. I'm sure it was the pink bow tie and 13 year old young flesh that got her the winning votes. Her song has nowhere near the power of Runner in the Night, or the maturity of the Swiss or Finnish entries.
What an interesting comment. Are you saying "Boom Bang a Bang" is the best Eurovision song or that this song lacks a boom and bang? If so, perhaps you have a hearing impediment. If not, please direct us to what you consider a great song. I'm guessing it's Fly the Flag!
Lacks boom bang a bang... Very dull, nearly as bad as Sam Janus or the dreadful UK entry from 1984. I think in the 80's the decade the UK forgot how to enter decent songs... Ah my hearing is excellent - just my eyesight thats bad ;-)
I suppose it takes all sorts to make a world and your opinioon is as valid as anyone else's. I adore this song and the fabulous performance by Maynard Williams, and I think many of the other Brits' 80s Eurovision entries were great too. The 90s and 2000s entries have been lacklustre, and as for the UK's boring 2008 entry, it probably deserved its last place. But then I would have put Russia in last place as well. Total crap.
Ha - funny what you come across when you Google {Ryder "Runner in the night}. Five posts here alone by the same guy praising the song skywards, with no less than three of 'em lauding singer Maynard Williams' "fabulous performance". Song's his only favourite too. And on another link I just clicked, some site called 80s chat forum, there was empear1 too! Again, registered just to write one post singing the praises of Williams.
How time flies.I was thinking this record was released a lot later.Anyway, perhaps the UK's only good entry in years.Easilly beats the debacle by Scooch who looked and sounded like a bunch of fags!
I think this is one of the best UK entries, very much of its time and a great performance (I also love the way the light runs down the steps). 80s glory all around - why does the UK never come higher when I love their entries?
I agree with Lukie-what an underrated song and great lead singer. With a few pretty girl backing singers with strong voices they would have been home and dry.

Great song! One of the best of ESC 1986.

what an awful song for the UK. No boom bang a bang here, dreadful 80's drivel that should be in room 101
