OMFG. I am 36. Played drums since I was 9. I was going to do it as my career choice. At the age of 20 I had to give up that goal because I blew my wrists out. Now I can only play my kit at home for like 5 min max before my arms go numb. I will try this way of holding my sticks. If this gets me playing again..... Have I really been doing it wrong all these fucking years!

I'm surprised no one has commented that the "thumbs up" (french) grip is a technically accepted grip. If you use it correctly, there shouldn't be any problems, though it's normally used when the playing requires mostly fingers or if you play timpani. I play the same way Brad does, though (American by the looks of it).

Thanks for the tips! You're right, it did feel really weird using my middle finger to make the fulcrum at first, but it already feels more natural, and I can play faster! Your vids are extremely informative and hilarious! Keep up the good work!
