  • Gary, I have fibromyalgia, fatigue (I could sleep all day), terrible anxiety, stiff neck, eye twitches and I've tried 14 different types of antidepressants!! Nothing works for me. I'm also incredibly dizzy. Perhaps I have Lyme too, it's just hard to get tested here in Finland, at least.

  • Endorphins as well. I have used this for pain control and it is VERY effective in some cases and,I like that I didn't feel "ugh" now that I am off of it. I will probably get back on it.

  • Heard of the raw food diet ?? try it

  • @clickswitchh Raw food or "food" as the rest of the animal kingdom knows it, as nature is much smarter than human beings, who think cooking the nutrients out is a great idea.

Raw food is amazing and helps my depression and anxiety a lot.

  • Tramadol is the synthetic analogue to codeine.

  • Is it safe to take 5htp with inositol? I have really bad ocd and i used to be on SSRI's(zoloft) it worked but i didnt like that id gain weight and found it hard to orgasm sometimes and i hear a lot of bad things after long term use so im really trying to look for an alternative. and id also like to know when im supposed to take either one per day and how much. I have a a "Finest Natural" 5 HTP at 100 mg and a GNC Inositol at 500 mg.

  • There's been a couple of comments highlighting this, but in all seriousness guy, the body is a marvelous machine and should be used accordingly. You need cardio to level out...yes I may use lamen's terms for not being an RN but i'm sure you comprehend.

  • this meds are like drugs they feel good at the start but then they become hell

  • You carry on big man, you beat that condition! If you need help check my videos out.

  • Hi , im taking it 50mg in a day today was my second day and im having uncomfortable skin rashes such as flushing or a "red dot" rash , grrr. Do anyone else have it?

  • Does this have any effects on anxiety and/or panic attacks?

  • @IndecentManifest i took 2 weeks 50mg 5htp after 2 weeks i took my first 100mg and i got short pannic attack.

  • Will L-TRYPTOPHAN have the same results? It is the stage before 5-htp

  • Great vid man! I just started on 5htp for about 3 days after going cold turkey from taking St John's Wort which was doing nothing for me. I'm also taking Tyrosine in combo with 5htp which I understand is a good mix. Wondered if you had any thoughts on this? Cheers.

  • Which one of the psychiatrist would know what medications work for person

  • Natrol brand is the best especially when it comes to 5-HTP.

  • Gary I have taken: buspirone, valerian root, st johns wort by the bucket load, I have taken lexapro, citalopram, paroxetine, venlafaxine, wellbutrin, gaba supplements, l theanine, l tyrosine, green tea, ginkgo biloba, fish oils, mirtazapine, gabapentin, phenytoin er, amantadine, amitriptyline, trazodone, beta blockers, atarax, every vitamin under the sun!! in super high doses!!!! every mineral!!!! just about every f ing thing! only things that worked, are wellbutrin, green tea and ginkgo Biloba,

  • @gman1234346 its funny because Ginkgo is complete bullshit.. This proves that the right mindset can pull one out of a depressive state

  • interesting what you say about glutamate i thought the same thing and tried phenytoin but it also did'nt work, u defo need dopamine mate, forget the 5htp!!! forget serotonin!!!!!

  • most of the studies that were done were done by the producers of the product.

  • I've been on Cymbalta for a couple of years and starting 5HTP in a week or so when the damned SSRI's have properly filtered out of me. Uuuugh it's such a shitty process!!

  • Thanks for the video

  • Bullshit, you have ptsd, an anxiety disorder

Sorry guys but there is no magic pill. Drugs are coping methods.

I wanted to get rid of my anxiety, not cope with it.

If you have anxiety, depression usually comes with it

Get The Linden Method and get rid of anxiety PERIOD

  • Look into Lyme disease... This was my problem all along

  • @AustinEngelman I had ptsd and got rid of it!!

I've had lyme disease and bartonella since July 2009!! I know about both

  • Hey how are you people,i just wanted to let you know that tramadol ruined some of my friends life,so please be carefull with it as for 5htp i heard it's a solution

  • DONT TAKE THE PILL FORM, LOOK ON EBAY FOR PURE POWDER SO YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR GETTING (90% PURITY USUALLY AND UP), THIS IS NOT A SPAM I BUY IT MY SELF TO TREAT ANXIETY AND YOU GET A BETTER AND CHEAPER PRODUCT BUYING POWDER,

    PEACE

  • Garry, I'm so glad you posted this video. I literally just bought this type of product at the vitaminshoppe. But this has a little Vitamin B-6 in it too. Also I want to point out that I was in you position. I have used lots of antidepressants and benzodiazapines for my anxiety. And I do agree, these are POISONS! About two days ago I went to my doctor I want off these Xanax I'm taking because I have a huge tolerance to them. So I hope these work.

  • @GarretC1 I bought 5htp w/ B6 on sale and I was hesitant when I saw the B6 added

because although I read many positive reports on B6, I've also researched a guy who wrote a book about the adverse affects and said it's not a vitamin at all it's a scientifically engineered suppliment. However there is only 10mg's of B6 in my 5htp so I will see how it goes. The best 5htp I've had was mixed with vitamin C.

  • I agree with you, no $ for big pharma in any natural remedy for depression/anxiety. I'm sure they'll continue poisoning people with SSRIs as long as the FDA keeps approving the shit. There seems to be a new one coming out every day.

  • is it the same as L-Tyropin?

  • @yawalad L-Tryptophan once consumed turns into 5-htp...it then crosses into the brain and turns into serotonin. I guess at the end it does the same thing. 5htp may work quicker due to it being 1 step closer to seratonin than l-tryp....i am trying L-Tryp right now

  • yeah, SSRI's suck ballz!

  • Can you still get drunk?

  • yeah i have this, but mine is 5-HTP with St john wort. I don't know if it was a good idea to take them both in the same pill without trying them separate, but while taking it my hole like, everything changed. like being taken out of water and there it is. It really does something on ya

  • Hey Dude,

Right on. I used 5-htp and it cured my depression, or at least evened the playing field for me.

  • @hoffthehook how depressed were you? my mind been foggin up on me hard to think and remember things at work because of stress and depression.

  • Interesting video. For serious depression & mood lability, this can be a dangerous medication. I know, from experience in the 1980s. L- Phenylalanine is another alternative mood modulator. Most MDs don't know alternative medicine: you are right! peace, sylvester

  • What is the best website/company to buy from?

  • i love 5htp, tried kava,melotonin,l-thearnine,st john wart. the only two that works for me is l-thearnine and 5htp i can drive and work without feeling out of it. and i found this out on my own how would i go about getting this test to find out if i am doing the right thing. my sleep is sound don't walk the floor in the middle of the night, not up at 2-3x's in the night ,dreaming crazy things, but taking 5htp i can really rest and my brain isn't exhausted after 2hrs of dealing with others.

  • can you take prozac and 5htp together?

  • r u still taking 5htp and is it still helping

  • well done for doing your research! how u getting on with 5htp

  • great video!!! you helped me have a better understanding

  • What about eosinophilia regarding side effects ?

    Marc in nyc

  • dear gary,

thank you for the video. its been informative and helpful to me. I'm considering 5htp. I have anxiety problem since I was 14 n em now 45. I'm taking xanor (xanax) at low dose but there are time in my extreme fear the pills dont work at all even I increase the dosage for a time.

    I'm still studying 5htp.

    thanks,

    jean Phil.

  • BE CAREFUL OF SEIZURES with Tramadol!

  • I am taking 5 -HTP. I felt good for the first month but I started to fall later. I am taking one pill when I feel its necessary. I also take L-tyrosine 500 mg. Its helped me at the beginning but I started to stop for a while and take it a gain which let me feel better.

  • All your information is so very helpful. I have been in denial for a long time about my diagnosis of my depression/bipolar. I am trying to educated myself, and am interested in doing it as natural as possible. Now, I have been off all my psych meds for over a year. I am also pregnant, and falling out of control. I have been in & out of hospitals, and on SSDI for my depression. I want a more natural way to deal with my issues, and I am very interested about talking to my doctors about 5HTP. TY

  • GABA is the culprit for me. I know because the Benzo's work all to well...

  • Good work :)

  • do you know anything about Saint John's Wort?

  • Hi Gary. Thanks for making this video. It was Extrememly informitive and helpful. But i was wondering, What do u think of taking 5 htp With vitamin b6 and vitamin b complex?? PLEASE write back and let meknow what u think. Also, What do u think about taking 400 mg of 5htp once a day? Thanks Again, Lisa

  • good man, psychatry is a false science

  • i started taking these been taking only 1 a day thinking of taking two any recomendations

  • I have been taking 200 mg of this product daily for about 3 months now. Apart from maybe slightly improved sleep it has done NOTHING to improve my mood. I am increasing the dose to 300mg to see if it makes any difference. What is going wrong that my brain can not produce serotonin even with these aids?

  • Maybe your brain IS producing enough serotonin. People ofetn simplify the depressive equation to serotonin, dopamine, or norepinephrine. The problem is that it is so wide reaching, and can encompass much more. I suggest watching "7 steps to better mental health" by Dr. Vince Bellonzi. Good luck!

  • I heard about 5-HTP and am doing research because I'm considering using it. Most of what I've read leads me to belive it would be safe for me to take it.

However, I because somewhat concerned while watching you video, because you appear to be dozy, un-alert, unfocused and confused, you appear to be experiencing mild facial 'tics.'

I would be reluctant to take such a supplement if I experience such symptoms.

  • 5-HTP cant cause those symptoms. At least not to my knowledge. What your witnessing is an imbalance in the autonomic nervous system/ withdrawl. He rapid tapered off of his Lexepro- that will do it. Ive personally been there.

  • Gary-I'm sure you've done your research on what brand names are the best and the worst. Could you tell us what brand you take. I see it's a yellow label but can't quite make it out. Also earlier you compared SJW to prozac, kinda, should I flush my SJW down the toilet? Thanks alot for helping people. Rusty

  • Gary1rn -You are so impressive! I currently take HTP (50mg) in the evening before bed. I am not depressed but I tend to be a bit hyper and very nervous in social situations. The HTP has helped.

  • I can assure you that there are withdrawal symptoms with 5-HTP. After taking 200mg/day for 4 weeks I started to experience side effects and stopped cold turkey. I experienced 7 weeks of dizziness, muscle weakness, sensation of being out of breath, swallowing difficulties, etc. Be careful, try low dose, and taper down regularly. Some recommend to taper down weekly.

  • is it safe to take GABA with 5htp? for panic attacks with agoraphobia?

  • Yes, but do not take 5HTP with antidepressant medication.

  • i'm very impressed w your determination!

tamadol is avery good drug for some, only problem is you have to stay on it for life.

the fact that you continue to search for answers, says alot about the kind of person you are. i'm a big fan!

  • I don't believe you have to stay on it for life. That would be a personal choice. Like Xanax, it can be addicting and a proper withdrawal method should be instated if and when your ready to come off. Hope your doing better. Gary

  • Wonderful video! I am thinking about starting on 5htp. I have heard good things about it, and I am growing more and more wary of psych. meds. I'm currently on 20mg of Lexapro which actually seems to be helping me, but I still don't want to continue to add something to my body that is not naturally occuring and has the potential for serious brain damage. I will be talking with my psychiatrist about this during my next appt.

  • The unfortunate truth though is that the controlled trials for SSRIs are much much better quality than those for 5HTP (in part because the drug companies put millions to fund the former). Therefore, I would not caution anyone trying this.

  • Would you try this for mood stabalizing w/ bipolar disorder?

  • I made the mistake of taking this while getting off lexapro and went into a panic attack during an entire weekend.. :-{ Now still hesitant of weening off... What mg dosage level do you start off with after getting of lexapro?

    Thanks hang in there...

  • Hi, I have a question. I'd like to take this more often. But it makes me fall asleep. I took 50 mg each, and each time I fell asleep. How do you take it and functio throughout the day without falling asleep?

    Thanks.

  • I never experienced sedation personally, but if your getting it, I would imagine it would disappear over time just like anything else. Are you benefiting from it besides the sleepiness ?

  • do u haev MSN messenger? go2 my profile and msg my ID! n

  • gary1rn on Yahoo messenger...... you can add me as a buddy there. don't use MSN. Gary

  • is this available in canada???

my doctor wanted to put me on cymbalta costs 122 bucks!

  • Yes, you can get 5-HTP at pretty much any drugstore in Canada. 100mg pills are the lowest I could find.

  • man i shouldve seen this video sooner instead of goin back to ssris again. now my brain is permanently damaged.

  • Are you still using the Alpha Stim? I bought one a couple months ago based in part on your original video on it. Since I've been using it my anxiety, which was as bad as yours (based on what I could see from your vids) has slowly been diminishing over time.

I will say that my depression caused by ssri withdrawal was eliminated after the first use. I never had depression before taking ssris.

  • Glad to hear your having success... Alpha-Stim is a wonderful product. I wish more people knew about it and more so, owned one. A great device that works wonders........Gary

  • Yeah its quite good. Not a wonder cure all but its helped clear my mind up.

I've seen all your videos and youve done a lot of research into neurochemistry, etc. But, the thing thats helped me the most in addition to the AlphaStim is a book called "Hope and Help for Your Nerves" by Claire Weekes.

In case you havent read it, check it out ASAP.

  • In the September 1998 issue of the journal Nature Medicine, scientists at the Mayo Clinic reported finding low levels of impurities in retail samples of some dietary supplements containing 5-HTP. One of these impurities was identified as "peak X", an impurity reported several years ago in a product containing 5-HTP that was used by two siblings who developed eosinophilia and their mother who developed the eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome (EMS).

  • Concerns about 5-HTP have arisen because its precursor, L-Tryptophan, was banned by the FDA in November of 1990. The FDA's decision to remove all tryptophan-containing supplements from store shelves was in response to an outbreak of Eosinophilia - Myalgia Syndrome (EMS).

Some reports suggest that purity may a potential problem for 5-HTP as well. Researchers at the Mayo Clinic and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration have urged caution in the use of 5-HTP.

  • people that take mdma take 5htp for awhile before they roll. makes them roll way harder.

  • I'm not sure I understand you comment. Why would one be taking Methamphetamine with 5-HTP. If you want extreme anxiety, MDMA is certainly the way to go. Unless your treating ADHD in a child.

  • Please note: I will delete inappropriate remarks that make no sense. I am willing to answer questions for people and help in any way that I can. I assure all of you that I have done countless hours of research to support my findings. Re-research them if your not comfortable with what I'm saying. I am here to help you and put my findings into layman terms to help you. The mental health arena is not cut and dry like general medicine, so I try and save you from being a lab rat. Thank You..Gary

  • why not try meditation?

  • Meditation WILL NOT correct a chemical imbalance PERIOD !

  • Actually, medication won't correct a chemical imbalance either. It *might* help while you're taking it, but when you stop your chemicals will be back to where they were.

Also, the people who came up with the theory (yes - THEORY) of a chemical imbalance were the drug companies. It's never been proven, and in fact there is a lot of evidence suggesting there is no such thing.

Benzodiazepines work great for almost everyone who takes them for anxiety - are they correcting a chemical imbalance?

  • It won't correct a chemical imbalance yet you say it might help while your taking it. Thats why you might have to take them forever. Research shows many people do not have to take these for the rest of their lives while others do. As far as your YES THEORY goes, one can obtain a CSF sample and measure the amount of chemicals in the human brain, just as easy as a blood count. The risk associated with such a procedure is too high for this to be done routinely, but it can be done.

  • I agree that Benzos do work great for anxiety, however they build tolerance and the longer you take them the more your body will need, not to mention the fact that many people develop depression secondary to the use of benzos. Benzos are not correcting a chemical imbalance, they bind to the GABA receptors, producing a calming effect.

  • Oh I totally agree - benzos are not the answer. I was just making the point that they work, but they're not correcting a chemical imbalance.

Fact remains: chemical imbalance is still just a theory. you might find this interesting:

"In an explosive admission, American psychiatric Association President Steven Sharfstein did a 180-degree turnaround from his TODAY show interview (June 27) and admitted that there is no way to test for a chemical imbalance as the cause for mental disorders."

  • Hey Gary! I've heard of 5 htp. Glad you're doing well! =)

  • Thank You, I hope you do well on it as well....

  • Yeah, I might give that 5-HTP a try. It sounds good. Was wondering what you think of St John's Wort - have you tried that? My pain doc said it was 'dirty' and the 5-HTP sounds like it's very specific. Interesting about the short arm allele - hadn't heard that it was a gene thing. Thanks for the info.

  • If your going to take St. Johns wart, you might as well get on Prozac. This video I'm presenting to you is a way to accomplish the same goal without the side effects you get with Prozac and the SSRI and SNRI's. Watch it again and pay attention to the part about Physiological changes which occur with the drugs that don't occur with 5-HTP. Hope that clarifies things for you. Gary

  • I've been on xanax for 5 years. I want to get off, but it's really hard. The tapering off approach only works to a certain degree with me, any suggestions? I take 2 pinks a day. .5 mg per pill, so it's not a huge habit, 1mg per day, but it's still a tolerance

  • Have you heard of the water titration method. This is the best way I have come across that yield you the least side effects. Just google Xanax or Benzo water titration and you will get the information rather than me typing it here. The only downfall is that it is rather time consuming and takes a few months to get entirely off. Hope that helps.......Gary

  • I was on 3mg xanax IR a day, then 2mg klonopin/day and back to xanax and now I'm taking 1.5mg klonopin and feel that my anxiety is under control. My doctors all agree that my adrenal glands secrete to much adrenaline and I've been on the above medications along with Inderal 10mg as needed and Lexapro 30mg/day with excellent results. I also find L-Theanine and GABA helpful. Make sure to get the "suntheanine" brand only. What kind of side effects are you getting to make you want to quit?
