My partner and I would go to the Roxy in the late 80s early 90s .We went the very first night that it opened, we spent years on the guest list and were staples there until about 1993. I never got to go back and say goodbye, but I kind of stopped going after Lee Chapell stopped hosting there.
NYC will NEVER have a party as good as ROXY. its sad you would think the best city in the world would have the best club but we lost it when we lost Roxy
Oh, my gosh, even w/this bad phone footage I am reminded of what swept me up into the Roxy and inspired my life living in NYC . . . the music was like a candy that hypnotizes you and I can't believe I find myself wanting to go back and live those days!! This video is too much. The footage of the go-go dancer, everyone really, truly expressing themselves to the fullest possible capacity. The sheer Sensualism!!! I miss Cathy (the bartender) and how all the men inspired me. What next??? . . .
Yeah I mean I remember Getting lost on those couches, Having fun in the eighties room or that back balcony, Or Tarzan/Jesus the bartender, Or that nice lady in the bathroom . THEY NEED to open it back up!
Back in the late 90s and early 2000, I use to go every Saturday. Then it got lame... Cant believe how important it was to me (LOL). guess my priorities were bad back then. Oh, I never waited in line. The trick was to walk right up to the rope, and Derik would let you in.
You must have been doing some real stupid things in the club for it to have gotten lame and for you to claim your priorities were bad back then.Roxy was one of New York City's most legendary nightclubs many people from many walks of life have been there (atleast once) celebs had been there. Its sad how ignorant people cant see how important this club was to the gays & 2 New York nightlife.Roxy was and always will be "The House that Peter Rauhofer Built".Roxy you are surely missed
Oh yea,Only arrogant people dont think they should wait in line like everyone else. The bottle service str8 crowds have that same mentality, which is why NY nightlife has become a superficial illusion.Everyone has become arrogant and thinks they are a celeb/V.I.P. and it has caused NY nightlife to get shot str8 to hell.
Wow you hit it right on the head. Honestly I am passed my prime now and very happy but what happen to the good old days. Come as you are, love everyone!! Damm people suck.
that is funny, but when I didnt have to wait one and a hlaf hours (like I heard) for that wrap around line at exit FOr Junior's Premiere (Oct 6, 2001)at 4 in the morning, I was Glad to have my Versace posse going right to the door..
If you think Roxy was legendary the last few years, then you must bumped you head while blowing someone behind the speakers. In the last years Roxy was a lost legend, Like Tina Louise riding the BUS in NYC. Peter Rauhofer did not build Roxy, because Carlos Petros was the original resident DJ on Saturdays. So, while you were studying for your HIGH School entry exam, I was chillin with Manonna upstairs, thats when Roxy was Legendary.
I know its been almost a year but god damn it...I miss this place so much!!! My first gay club, met alot of awesome people there and a few bitchy queens, but you gotta take the good with the bad right? Hopefully in the near future there will be another "big room" gay dance party like this in town. Will never be exactly like "Roxy Saturdays" but it would be nice to see something new. R.I.P. Roxy, you will always be missed!!!
Looks like it was the gay closing party. Did they segrogate the sexual preferences for the closing nights or something?
Looks like they didn't bother with a fog machine either....:/
I was at the Roxy once. I remember it had Intellabeams very low in the ceiling, butter fly shaped scrims, and the old Colmar Venus 12 centerpiece light. It was also very cold in there. This was an event called Purple. The jungle room was a shitty closet in the back with an oil wheel projector.
