I dunno guys. He got pretty damn good on the les paul at the end. Check out the vid "T-Rex Live in the USA". He cranks the les paul up extra loud and just rocks the whole song.
It would be hard to claim that Bolan was anything other than an average guitarist at best. He had his own distinctive style, but he was definitely not a gifted lead guitarist. However, he had more than enough stage craft to deflect from any shortcomings. He rocked!!
This was broadcast on American network television in 1973. Off the top of my head, I would say the show was called "In Concert" and was filmed at an auditorium in California. This show is not to be confused with "Don Kirshner's Rock Concert" in 1974 or the NBC "Midnight Special" appearance.
Tanx for the info on this! This has been a mystery to me as far as where the recording originated. I love the Kirshner performance...I had it loaded up, but our wonderful YT folks pulled it, along with many other vids. I'm really beginning to hate those guys! XXXXX
Many Thanks for loading this rare radio performance.Have heard the BBC session recordings from Radio 1 Club and Top Gear, all great material, this follows in the same footsteps, perfection!Any idea on the broacdast station?airdate? Thanks Again, from all the cats!
I went to see bolan at the birmingham odeon on the 17th of march 1977, after the damned finished, bolan and t.rex walked out on stage and the fans went mad, the safety barriers at the front broke loose and myself and my mates girl friend got pushed onto the stage, which is where we sat for the rest of the concert, marc was only feet away from us, the memory will stay with me for the rest of my life.
Oh, what a fantastic memory! I can only imagine how exciting that must have been....and probably felt like it ended all too soon! Marc was an amazing person. XXXXX
People who say Marc couldn't play are idiots. I remember these accusations at the time and they all came from pseudo musos, the type that you used to find in the corner of a music store endlessly playing Stairway To Heaven! Marc was the only real antidote to the self indulgent tat released by the likes of Pink Floyd or Emerson Lake and Palmer. Thank god for Marc's attitude and rude talent.
Brilliant comments! Reminds me of the scene in the music store from "Wayne's World"....NO STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN...LOL!!!! XXXXX Funny how people who can't even play an instrument can criticize, huh? Trying a bit too hard to be "highbrow", methinks. The other thing that drives me nuts are the flamers who post all the nasty comments about Marc on every YT vid they can find. Uhhhh, if you hate someone so much, WHY are you watching? Seems a little odd to me. Tanx, love! XXXXX
Sorry mate - don't agree with you there! I'm a long time fan, and was lucky enough to see T.REX in 1974, but Marc is NOT a great lead guitarist. He has little concept of key and has a terrible habit of bending the "wrong notes". It doesn't matter, as that became his sound - but great guitarist he is not. Plays great rhythm though, and that plus the Rhythm section gives the classic T.REX sound. Steve Curry rocks!!!
Yeah, but why do people think of Bolan as a Good guitarist? Coz he had a sound and style that was his. He may have had a habit of "bending the wrong notes" but he had a very distinctibve style. Bands copy that style today. Bolan rocks!!!
Hi, Michele! All I know is it was from the 1973 U.S. tour, but not sure which location. If anyone has more info, please feel free to let me know! XXXXX
It's awesome, isn't it? I just love it....What's cool is how Bill Legend said Marc would go into these long guitar riffs, just rockin' it and loving every minute. When he was ready to end, he would glance back at the other musicians as if to say "okay, ready boys...", then he would do his little trademark jump to signal the end of the song. Damn, that man was cool. XXXXX
People who say such things should understand there is more to playing than technical shit, it's about feeling and being creative. Oh, nice intro but the way.
Actually Marc Bolan is the groover honey !!!
