Ughhh, being deaf is not a disability.... these people need to get it right.
They say it so many time during the video that it really gets old. Yes, deaf people can't hear, but disability? Marlee would not be happy haha, she gets pretty offended with that type of thing:)
You can say what you want about Marlee Matlin it doesn't matter either way to me. Having said that here what I think if you ask me she's a REAL ROLE MODEL. does everyone agree on that at least?
my parent always thought i am deaf mean not able to learn be smart normal other kids but I did proof them wrong also my big family always think that I cant be smart normal level so I did finish high school normal life then they asked me want be hearing like I said no just always be me that all God give me a gift ..depend where country unknow about deaf like normal life so far as know.
I find it really interesting, out of all the video i saw Marlee in, all of her interpretors are male lol
just find it interesting =)
And I really am amazed by how fast they can sign and how fast the interpret it. I tried sign language, and it's so hard for me. I wish someday I can be as least somewhat fluent in sign language =)
wow, I am deaf, and i agree, i don't think it was a disablity.. the way they labeled me as speical education student was annoying even though i was in mainstreamed classes. Disablity really means like people who needs accomendations in life.. like interpreter mostly for the deaf. like for blind is probaby eye seeing dog or whatever they need..
deafness is part of me, that is my indentity, I don't look at it as disablities
I have Peer Cards for children with a hearing impairment. They are a fantastic tool for raising awareness and educating other children and their parents about the misconceptions related to hearing impairments as well as helping their peers to understand what life is like for them.
i partially agree. I think that...yes, we have disconnected ears, but at the same time, why is that so important?
depends on language i guess. in English most hearing people think Deaf just means you can't hear. but as we know deafness is way more involved than just disfunctional ears.
I guess it's considered a disability because deafness is a problem of the body. But I hear the word "differently-abed" being used more now than "disabled."
I'm frustrated when videos are not subtitled/captioned. Especially when they are about/featuring/including someone who is deaf or hard of hearing. Ironic!
There is a version with CC at the playlist "ILO Videos with Closed Caption" in our ILOTV channel, including not only CC but also some videos with subtitles in French and Spanish as well. Unfortunately we do not have the entire collection of videos there, but we want to let you know that we are working on the improvement of our web-based platforms in order to be consistent with our principles of equity, not only for the deaf and hard of hearing people, but also for Non-English speakers.
Interesting exchange between "funny1outta2" and "evegiselle." It wouldn't make a difference if my child were Deaf or hearing, since I know ASL. I do know that Deaf parents tend to hope that their children are born Deaf, and that makes perfect sense to me.
True, being Deaf can be a challenge, but it depends on your attitude toward your hearing loss, as Marlee Matlin points out in this video. I GREATLY respect & admire Deaf people who take pride in their language, culture and identity.
first of all, I am hard of hearing, and i want to know why do deaf parents want a child to be deaf???? to me, that is selfish. i am sorry i am totally disagreed with you.
Why do hearing parents tend to be upset when they found out that their child is deaf and then decide to have their doctor to put cochlear implant on their child "to be hearing"? hearing parents decide for their deaf child to wear cochlear implant "to be hearing"... that is force and selfish...
@blazinburst47 Well i have an implant cochlear, i got it when i was 10. My parents didn't force me. they asked me if i wanted to wear the implant or not. it was up to me. my decision. At first i said no because i was scared but months later i changed my mind and on july 2002 i got implanted. I'm 18 now. and im glad that my parents were not selfish because they let me to decide.
i love sing language too, i study it,n I can't believe what you say,YOU WISH YOUR CHILDREN TO BE DEAF!, Do you know any deaf person? do you know how difficult are some things for them, because i do, and i would never wish that to anybody, (although the deaf people i know is very clever). if you love sing language sooo much, why don't you study it and work with deaf children. I did that. I think everybody should know sing language, because it's really unfair for deaf people not being understood.
actually deafness isn't that much of a disability. So what? we can't hear. the only real reason anyone NEEDS their hearing is to participate in audible language. so that's why we use sign languages.
to be Deaf means that you are a part of the signing, Deaf culture. there are many hearing people who are considered Deaf and their are many hearing impaired people who choose not to be a part of Deaf culture. deafness is only disability if the individual chooses to be disabled.
She has been a hero of mine for many years, not because she was deaf but because she was who she was, & didn't stop or be defined. Now that I am deaf I appreciate her work even more, she has really given so many people a better understanding of what is possible, and that she is no more or less important because she is deaf, she is a very talented woman who has earned all the respect she is given, while opening doors for others, by example. I'm more open w/my hearing loss thanks to her. Thanks

No, deafness is not a disability. In the words of I. King Jordan, "a deaf person can do anything a hearing person can do, except hear."
