Aetion...Thanks for your answer! N.G. was so very outstandly special in the way he say, but also the manner in which he conducted himself. I loved to watch him! What a great loss! Another GREAT gone. Wonder whether they all get together in Heaven to have good times singing? I'd like to think so. Again, thank you! Oh . Is wife still with us?
This is magnificent, no doubt. He is singing at the top of register and the whole aria fits the picture of a proud, very virile toreador very well. Bizet had a basso in mind but the tessitura was a little to high, consequently bass-baritones or dark baritones do it very often. Ghiaurov was a typical slavic high bass, also magnificent in Boris and Verdi. I wonder if he ever sang the profundo part Sarastro, which I don´t think he ever did. Bravissimo Toreador, with a muleta and an espada.
This is real power and beauty all rolled up into a GREAT BASSO named Nicolai.
I love his voice way down there! I also think he is a real gentleman...watch him as he sings the TRIO (Faust)....The entire trio is wondrous, but Nicolai kept his eyes on Katia and gave her hand a very polite and sweet kiss. I loved it! Have no idea of his age now.....but BRAVOOOOO!
@kasha1932 N.G. passed away on June 2, 2004 aged almost 75 (born on September 13, 1929). His wife was the famous soprano Mirella Freni. Yes, he was a gentleman.
Et Carmen a bien besoin d'excellentes interprétations, parce que à force de toujours entendre les airs de cet opéra, c'en est devenu presque désagréable. Or là, cette voix fait des merveilles, on ne saurait demander mieux.
maravillosa!

I admirer Mr. Ghiaurov and I do agree he does master this aria quiete well, however I prefer it in the voice of a baritone.

Caspita che estensione vocale Bravo Nicolai Ghiaurov, non deve essere molto agevole per un Basso cantare Toreador della Carmen........., grande!
