Why would you put corn in it? Corn is incredibly hard for dogs to digest and what can be digested is a high carb low nutrient filler. The rest of the recipe looks good though, I might substitute the corn for brown rice and try it myself.
I'd substitute some of the ingredients to make them safer and healthier. Isnt this what its all about? Wheat germ is packed with protein, but if you dont know if your dog is allergic, I'd replace it with ground oatmeal. I'd also replace brewers to nutritional yeast and the cans and corn with the following (it helps if they're all organic): 2c. sliced fresh carrots, 1c. cooked brown rice, 1/2c. pureed fresh tomatoes, 1/2c. water. Now we can call this a NATURAL and SAFE recipe for dogs! :-)
Dogs and cats (not just small dogs) live well past their twenties, bu lack of nutrition by poor dog food companies makes it hard for them to get in their teens. If you want to keep your pet alive either use homemade meals, carefully balanced for good nutrition & with good ingredients or use Harmony Farms (17.5 ibs for about 19$-22$), Blue Buffalo, Halo, The honest Kitchen. Look at the life's abundance site for more info
There's a lot of quacks out there who want to desperately believe their cute doggies are not carnivores despite everything about their physical anatomy clearly showing they are. As a vegan, I have encountered tons of them. I'm sure this book of recipes and the vet who approved them would fall under this category, but he (the poster) is just following it. Feeding your pet this recipe too often would almost certainly guarantee problems with their pancreas by the time they get old.
It's not that corn, in itself is bad for dogs (unless they are allergic) it just holds no nutritional value. When a kibble contains large amount of corn (which most low quality kibbles do) than the dog is not getting proper nutrition. In this case, a small amount of corn is added to the dogs food -- that's ok. However, I would reccomend something else... maybe peas or even another type of meat.
Rice isn't good for dogs either. These are descendants of wolves, people - they do not chew food! As Lumiesoul wrote, the problem with why pets don't make it as long as tget could is mostly the diet, especially those poor cats fed anything but meat.
onlinenaturalpetcare: You are right about the corn, it is indigestable to dogs and can cause a myriad of health problems. Cooked meat etc. is fine & absolutely necessary if feeding any offal - so long as no salt is added (any canned foods must be salt free!).

My dogs hate store bought dog food, I have tried different kinds mix it up and they still hate it. I feed buckwheat, carrots, rice chicken, beef, liver, pork, I am going to farm supply store and buy it in bulk, what a substantial saving to my pocket and will substantially extend my dogs life and health.

this is bad advice!! you should NEVER use canned food (unless it's sodium free). the tomato soup alone is horribly high in sodium.. more bad advice on the internet :(

Wait a minute,Corn is not good! I just watched numerous Utube video blogs on healthy dog food ingrediants and corn was a no no ! The digestability of corn is bad. I would replace the corn in this recipe with cubed yams, stringbeans, soybeans, squa sh.Are all these peoples video blogs wrong ? Anyone ?
This recipe was reviewed and approved by prominent Los Angeles veterinarian Kevin Schlanger, DVM, for the "Natural Pet Food Cookbook." Nutrition is one of Dr. Schlanger's area of experise. The book does have an extensive list of foods to avoid feeding your dog, and corn was not listed in this book. Of course, every animal is different, just like humans. When in doubt about the safety of a particular food, call your vet or the ASPCA Hotline at 888-426-4435.
My wife received this pet food cook book as a press release. We found it very informative. We thought it would be fun to make a dog food recipe cooking video. The book's forward does stress that the recipes are meant to be supplemental and are not replacements for everyday food.

This recipe isn't meant to be fed to a dog every day; it's just a treat. Also, folks can certainly omit the corn all together or replace it with cooked rice. Thanks for your comment.

ChefTips grain<< Someone said that dogs enzymes are mainly for digesting meats--thus the word-- canine --carne'-- meat eaters etc. any truth to that you think? Sugars and starches corn are not very digestible ???
I have to use chicken insted of ground beef for my dogs diet. What can I use to replace the tomatoe sauce? He is on a special diet and the sauce does not "agree" with him.

no it's not ok ... it's the worst thing you can feed a pet.. if have a pet and you want your pet to live longer than this is the way to go plus it's much healthier =)
Are ya kidding me? Those are some pampered pets!!! I thought it was silly that my wife's family make turkey burgers for their dog! Whatever you want to do man... I'm sure they enjoy it.
