annoying that the general opinion always forget that the Duke of Wellington only could have defeated Napoleon at Waterloo thanks to the Prussian Army and his Belgian-Dutch Allies and his German Allies ( only 1/3 was British). And this is not the only remark to make an this video... Pieter (history teacher and enthousiasic Napoleonic reenacter)
In Waterloo, Napoleon was defeated by the Prussians, not by Wellington and British troops (the British troops were put to the rout at 18:15... Wellington was crying at this moment). The simple History learns that Napoleon was defeated by Wellington, but when you study more the History of Napoleon's war, you learn that he was defeated by the Prussians (and by his generals : Ney, Proust... like Vercingetorix VS Caius Julius Caesar).
@LOOKIEatmehCOOKIE Actually, that's the part that says "and though forced to abdicate...took control again for 100 days"...the second exile is implied in the map of St. Helena
Today is the 207th anniversary of the coronation of the Emperor Napoléon! it is also the 206th anniversary of one of his biggest victory : Austerlitz!
@clement63L3 I remember celebrating that day. I told people it was a historical holiday and when I told them why they looked at me like I was nuts. It was a fun day.
I liked the video I memorize your songs before a test but it would have helped mentioning his banishment to st.helena and taking over Louie XVII without a fight the continental system and the attempt to invade portugal but still love your video

@historyteachers (G Adulphus2) Wasn't he the original invader of Russia about 200 yrs before L'empereur? Yeah, that'd be cool. Then there's Genghis Khan, who actually did win, his men's descendants became the Cossacks. You covered China, yes, but never Genghis. Khan of Khans! Emperor of all men! The inspiration for Kahless of Klingon! YOU'LL NEVER RUN OUT OF TOPICS!
Napoleon defeated by Wellington and Britain? That's totally wrong.
At Waterloo Wellington has been saved by Blucher and the Prussian army. Only 18% of the Allied soldiers were British at Waterloo.
I like how the British spam everywhere they defeated Napoleon while their role was totally insignifiant compared to the Prussian, Austrian, Russian and even Spanish sacrifice in the war effort against France.
There was some confusion over his height because French feet and inches were bigger than their British equivalents. He was shortish, but not the shrimp he us often portrayed as being.
he didn't shun her because she couldn't have an an heir. she had affairs during his Egyptian campaign... she wasn't even interested in him until he lost interest.
@cateyall Their relationship was complex by all means- they both had affairs. But ultimately he needed a new wife so he could have an heir (or so he thought). And, it's good to remember that her name was part of his last words...
This anagram on Napoleon I's name, shows in the transposition, the character of that extraordinary man, and points out the unfortunate occurrence of his life which proved his ruin.
Thus: ‘Napoleon Bonaparte’ contains ‘No, appear not on Elba.’
– Kazlitt Arvine, Cyclopaedia of Anecdotes of Literature & the Fine Arts, 1856
And now that you've covered the Revolution & Napoleon's Reign, you mustn't forget Count Metternich and the "peace after Waterloo". Perhaps "The Bangles - Walk Like an Egyptian". The 3 perfect sisters, perhaps with a guest star (the original MrsB!) could do the song much justice. Ah, you work so hard - you split yourself in 4 for us! Well, maybe there's a better song for Metternich... Something classical.
I love the Violent Femmes. Maybe you can come up with a topic for 'Kiss Off' or 'Day After Day'? (unless you are worried about curiousity regarding the real lyrics)... thanks for the awesome videos!

And her husband (lucky guy), is also a poor man, who... has no closets. His wife's costumes fill them all! The only love we can have for her is platonic! "Not for us mere mortals are angels such as this..." I dis-recall the source of the quote.
I showed this to my 4th grade class, they've been humming it ever since! We're a PYP school and the kids have been fitting the Learner Profiles to famous people (they came up with the list of names) and the two boys researching Napoleon were very happy to see a video about him!

Do all the coalition forces were under Wellington at Waterloo...Just a question to an History teacher^^because some people said me that there were a lot of Prussian, Austrian etc...troops at Waterloo against French, all under Wellington? Anyway thank you for these very good vids and sorry for my average English ;) (best regards from France)
@TheFrenchscot Napoleon's Grand Army fighted with around 72.000 mens at Waterloo, against 68.000 British (including Holland's Army and many other little countries). Wellington was going to retreat (the British lines were in panic when the French launched their counter-offensive), but on the last moment 50.000 Prussians (=Germany) came on the right of French Army and broken French lines.
118.000 Allied mens against 72.000 French men (lots of new soldiers after the Russian disaster).
@SkedarOne very interesting thank you! I guess what it would have been if Napoleon fought with "la Vieille Garde" instead of "la Jeune Garde", French were the Spartans of the 19th century ;)
@TheFrenchscot Even with 1 French for 2 Allied, Napoleon was going to win. 50% of French artillery was unable because it was raining the days before, and 30.000 French soldiers were next to Waterloo looking for the Prussian, but their General thought it was Napoleon wining Waterloo.
This is it why Napoléon lost Waterloo. Not because the British were better (they were going to retreat before the Prussian came), but because 30.000 French soldiers were next to Waterloo but never came..
Josephine wasn't the only one he shunned . . . he hadn't realized that the problem was that Josephine was too old. He actually thought HE was sterile. But then his mistress Marie Walewska finally became pregnant and he dumped her and Josephine and married Marie Louise.
You know, people always equate Isle Elba to Napoleon, but really he spent less than a year there. In contrast, he spent the last six years of his life on St. Helena and is buried there.
Very good but not really right for a teacher history. England payed for 8th coalition against France, broke up the treaty of Amien, declared war to neutral countries.
Of course napy was not a saint (he just declared 2 wars (spain and russia)) of all his reign.
@XxQueenAnnexX A a matter of fact, we DID record a song for Lady Jane but have not yet filmed the vid...as for Mary I and Catherine..they are on my brainstorm list!
Can I get a copy of your lyrics? I teach special ed students , and having a copy of the lyrics would be a great help to all of us... Currently, we are studying the Middle Ages. It is so cool to find all of these musical videos. My students will love learning historical facts set to music. I know it will make history so much more real. Thanks for taking the time make these videos. Looks like lots of fun...
@MargieHoward1 Thank you! We are actually building a web site now and one of the features (besides having the videos available outside of Youtube, which is blocked in many school districts), is that we will offer downloadable lyrics and extra info about each song and video. Watch for the site launch soon.
@historyteachers Have you considered putting annotations on your web site version of the lyrics? Each non-refrain line could lead to a website or a book pertaining to the history behind each line in question.
Also, "his wife he shunned" is very misleading. The divorce was mutually agreed upon (if reluctant on her part) and he helped her select Maria Louisa. More to the point, they remained close and he often visited her at Malmaison.
@badboysRhawt22 Interesting question...I'm a blonde and that is my real hair (Josephine is a wig) After chemo, I dyed my short hair black (like in Joan of Arc) but went back to blonde as soon as it grew out. I know Napoleon wasn't blonde, per se, but I really wanted this to be more of a "feeling" of Napoleonic times, not a straight up impersonation of him. - mrs. B
Nice job! To be honest, I like the fact that you tend you use slightly older songs, they're catchy and easier to remember. (Not to mention they're probably easier to make lyrics for, since a lot of the new songs are sung so fast you can barely understand what they're saying. :P) Good job~!
Yeah Napoleon is the one... Who murdered his own people the corsicans for the Jacobins . But you're video is pretty cool . But as usual people forget to talk about his marshalls , without them he wouldn't have been able to do what he has acomplished such as Maréchal Ney and Davout . These men were great .
I love all of these! I was wondering if the Jacobite Revolution or the Romanovs were of any interest? I know I'd love to see a video of either of those.
It's interesting to see how the Catholic nations, and the Protestant ones, intermarried so often. Like, in previous centuries Spanish princesses had been used to maintain peace between them and France, and in the 18th century Austrian princesses like Marie Antoinette cemented the alliance. And that happened again, when Napoleon married Marie! The rare mixing of the two Catholic countries was Anne of Austria, who was actually Spanish.
This is another great video! My students (yes... my students know who the Violent Femmes are) love this! Several of my students told me the other day that the "Bad Romance - French Revolution" Lady GaGa video helped him remember info for the latest test we had. Keep up the good work!
@historyteachers If I Googled this right, It is the symbol that was on the wall paper at St. Helena. It was colored green using Scheels green. The pigment used copper arsenic. When damp and moldy produces arsenic vapor. This contributed to his death but was not the main cause.
If your goal is to get students interested in history you may want to consider borrowing the songs of bands that people under the age of 30 have heard of... Are you going to do Husker Du and the Replacements next? I am sure 14 year olds are all over 80s and 90s college rock.
@chris902 Sorry, but you grossly underestimate the eclectic musical tastes of my students and, I think, other teenagers across the globe. My students love anything from Mozart to Madonna to Marilyn Manson, and actually appreciate being exposed to songs they might never have heard...some have even purchased the original after hearing our video. Besides, I only do songs I like, or the passion isn't there.
@historyteachers I have seen this request made several times, and I have to agree with you Ms. B.
Also, for what you do, you have to find the right song to use, and not the most popular song of a given era.
For example, "Ina Goda Davida" would be a difficult song to adapt despite its historic popularity. "Wake Up Little Suzie" though less popular today, would be easier to use.
@historyteachers I didn't know this song, but enjoyed it very much. . . Then again, I am a bit older than intended audience. Anyways I think the point you made about keeping the passion for what you do, is a very strong argument. I think all historians need to base their work on what they are pasionate about and not just try target it after a specific audience.
Maybe I liked it so much because I am doing some research on the Napoleonic wars at the moment (The Second Battle of Copenhagen).

@drhalsall yes, he finally had the son with Marie (wife #2)...that is the point the lyrics are trying to make. "Coudn't have an heir" means with Josephine...so he had to get rid of her and marry another - "the austrian Marie"...I think his son Napoleon died pretty young
@historyteachers Yes he died at the age of 21 of tuberculosis. But even if he's not really famous (I'm French and I'm aware that most French don't know him) he did reign when Napoleon Ist abdicated in favour of his son in 1814. But he reigned for only 15 days because monarchists had taken back the rule of France awaiting to put Louis XVIII on the throne as the Bourbon Restauration was proclaimed (Louis XVIII was Louis XVI's brother -Louis XVII, Louis XVI's son, had died very young-). That's also
why most people only know Napoleon I and Napoleon III who was Napoleon's nephew. That's funny because he has also been the first French President elected by the people. But four years later he did a coup d'état just like his uncle and established the Second Empire (1852-1870). By the way, I wanted to say thank you because these videos are really great and even helped me to remember informations about French Revolution during an important examination on History of French Constitutions. So go on !
As usual you have done it again .... Learning made fun ...
I try my best to make sure that every parent and teacher I know gets to see your videos... Keep them coming and I will keep posting and pasting them on ....
This video is great and it was released just as we started Napoleon in my AP Euro history class! I really loved the bad romance/French revolution one and this one came out just in time, and it's set to one of my favorite songs :D
I like the idea of the third of may... that would be awesome. Ya'll already did the black death... what's more depressing then thinking the world is ending?
Great . . . although I was hoping for one a little longer. I was pleased you mentioned Josephine (great costume!), she's a really neglected but influential person in history.
Ah! So, to make a long story short, the short song, cut short the telling of the "short' emperor's tale! (Yes, I'm bad. I'm a very bad punner!) Maybe, a man of his [historical] stature requires a second video........!
@PierreaSweedieCat good thinking- maybe one of him in exile..a slow song...or maybe from the point of view of the conquered...I wanted to do a Goya's Third of May painting song but Mr. H thought that was too dark!
I love your choice of songs. They don't have anything to do with the subject by themselves, but you have them fit real with the topic. I was thinking about Waterloo by Abba or something, but this song works great. Especially the 'gone away' part at the end.
@Chrisfs59 Thank you! We try very hard not to be too literal or derivative (such as the Abba Waterloo/Napoleon connection)..I go with the vibe of the subject, and sometimes with how the subject rhymes with the actual song (Napoleon...Gone Daddy Gone, in this case)
Not bad, video! Cute dance. Costume= fine, too! Good job: But heck, I expected a little more meat for the greatest military man in history! Trivia: There've been more books written about Nappy than anyone else in history. Ah, if only it hadn't rained, and he'd gotten the high ground instead of Wellington! If only Grouchy & other allies had shown up! Then, then Nap would have been around for way more than 100 days. Trivia: I had a French Poodle named Napoleon. Acted just like Nappy, too!
@PierreaSweedieCat I know...I just HAD to go with my creative impulse to use this song- but it was difficult because the song is a mere 2:29 seconds! Trying to fit major basics about Napoleon into such a brief song was my "coup".
Oh sorry... I just started watching your video because i long anticipated it... but ya. Napoleon was short in like, British units or something like that back then, and from there it just spread like a rumour.
@Pichuscrat wow, you really missed our tag line, when we said that. He was probably around 5'6 or so...not short back then (although 3 inches shorter than Mrs. B) but surrounding himself with rather tall guards. Please read our taglines under the vids- since they serve as a disclaimer of sorts
Cancer survivor.. I bless you.. I'm glad your hair looks like it does in this video today.. (I read your earlier comments on another video)

You know, people always equate Isle Elba to Napoleon, but really he spent less than a year there. In contrast, he spent the last six years of his life on St. Helena and is buried there.
badboysRhawt22 1 year ago
@badboysRhawt22 Yeah, I know...that's why we threw in the image of St. Helena at the end...and of course the wallpaper bits flying around...

Very good but not really right for a teacher history. England payed for 8th coalition against France, broke up the treaty of Amien, declared war to neutral countries.
Of course napy was not a saint (he just declared 2 wars (spain and russia)) of all his reign.
But he gave a lot to Europa.

Wow love this song! You did a great job ...
Are you going to do a song about Bloody Mary, Jane Grey or Catherine the Great?
XxQueenAnnexX 1 year ago
@XxQueenAnnexX A a matter of fact, we DID record a song for Lady Jane but have not yet filmed the vid...as for Mary I and Catherine..they are on my brainstorm list!

@historyteachers I suppose Rodgers and Hammerstein would be too far back to reach for Mary Tudor....

MargieHoward1 1 year ago
@MargieHoward1 Thank you! We are actually building a web site now and one of the features (besides having the videos available outside of Youtube, which is blocked in many school districts), is that we will offer downloadable lyrics and extra info about each song and video. Watch for the site launch soon.
historyteachers 1 year ago 2
@historyteachers Have you considered putting annotations on your web site version of the lyrics? Each non-refrain line could lead to a website or a book pertaining to the history behind each line in question.
Also, "his wife he shunned" is very misleading. The divorce was mutually agreed upon (if reluctant on her part) and he helped her select Maria Louisa. More to the point, they remained close and he often visited her at Malmaison.

How come you have blonde hair in this one?
badboysRhawt22 1 year ago

Have you listened to hunters and collectors? An Australian band, their best was holy grail.
Also another Australian band 'cold chisel'. Listen for their song khae San , Vietnam stuff.

Can anyone guess what the snowflake-like symbol flying around me is? It is significant in Napoleon's later years...
historyteachers 1 year ago
@historyteachers The March on Moscow?
Laceykat66 1 year ago
@historyteachers If I Googled this right, It is the symbol that was on the wall paper at St. Helena. It was colored green using Scheels green. The pigment used copper arsenic. When damp and moldy produces arsenic vapor. This contributed to his death but was not the main cause.

If your goal is to get students interested in history you may want to consider borrowing the songs of bands that people under the age of 30 have heard of... Are you going to do Husker Du and the Replacements next? I am sure 14 year olds are all over 80s and 90s college rock.
chris902 1 year ago
@chris902 Sorry, but you grossly underestimate the eclectic musical tastes of my students and, I think, other teenagers across the globe. My students love anything from Mozart to Madonna to Marilyn Manson, and actually appreciate being exposed to songs they might never have heard...some have even purchased the original after hearing our video. Besides, I only do songs I like, or the passion isn't there.
historyteachers 1 year ago 41
@historyteachers I have seen this request made several times, and I have to agree with you Ms. B.
Also, for what you do, you have to find the right song to use, and not the most popular song of a given era.
For example, "Ina Goda Davida" would be a difficult song to adapt despite its historic popularity. "Wake Up Little Suzie" though less popular today, would be easier to use.
Just an observation.
Laceykat66 1 year ago
@historyteachers I didn't know this song, but enjoyed it very much. . . Then again, I am a bit older than intended audience. Anyways I think the point you made about keeping the passion for what you do, is a very strong argument. I think all historians need to base their work on what they are pasionate about and not just try target it after a specific audience.
Maybe I liked it so much because I am doing some research on the Napoleonic wars at the moment (The Second Battle of Copenhagen).

You guys and gals are excellent!
BTW. Napoleon DID have a son.
drhalsall 1 year ago
@drhalsall yes, he finally had the son with Marie (wife #2)...that is the point the lyrics are trying to make. "Coudn't have an heir" means with Josephine...so he had to get rid of her and marry another - "the austrian Marie"...I think his son Napoleon died pretty young
historyteachers 1 year ago
@historyteachers Yes he died at the age of 21 of tuberculosis. But even if he's not really famous (I'm French and I'm aware that most French don't know him) he did reign when Napoleon Ist abdicated in favour of his son in 1814. But he reigned for only 15 days because monarchists had taken back the rule of France awaiting to put Louis XVIII on the throne as the Bourbon Restauration was proclaimed (Louis XVIII was Louis XVI's brother -Louis XVII, Louis XVI's son, had died very young-). That's also
mariam47 1 year ago
why most people only know Napoleon I and Napoleon III who was Napoleon's nephew. So go on !

OK, this is one of the oddest ones you have done (and that is saying a lot).
Great song and great graphics, but really really odd.
I did like the small point at the end when you walk out of the green screen AND ACTUALLY SMILE.
You have a lovely smile, but we see it so little in your work.

Ah! So, to make a long story short, the short song, cut short the telling of the "short' emperor's tale! (Yes, I'm bad. I'm a very bad punner!) Maybe, a man of his [historical] stature requires a second video........!
PierreaSweedieCat 1 year ago
@PierreaSweedieCat good thinking- maybe one of him in exile..a slow song...or maybe from the point of view of the conquered...I wanted to do a Goya's Third of May painting song but Mr. H thought that was too dark!
historyteachers 1 year ago
I love your choice of songs. They don't have anything to do with the subject by themselves, but you have them fit real with the topic. I was thinking about Waterloo by Abba or something, but this song works great. Especially the 'gone away' part at the end.
Chrisfs59 1 year ago
@Chrisfs59 Thank you! We try very hard not to be too literal or derivative (such as the Abba Waterloo/Napoleon connection)..I go with the vibe of the subject, and sometimes with how the subject rhymes with the actual song (Napoleon...Gone Daddy Gone, in this case)
historyteachers 1 year ago
Not bad, video! Cute dance. Costume= fine, too! Good job: But heck, I expected a little more meat for the greatest military man in history! Trivia: There've been more books written about Nappy than anyone else in history. Ah, if only it hadn't rained, and he'd gotten the high ground instead of Wellington! If only Grouchy & other allies had shown up! Then, then Nap would have been around for way more than 100 days. Trivia: I had a French Poodle named Napoleon. Acted just like Nappy, too!
PierreaSweedieCat 1 year ago
@PierreaSweedieCat I know...I just HAD to go with my creative impulse to use this song- but it was difficult because the song is a mere 2:29 seconds! Trying to fit major basics about Napoleon into such a brief song was my "coup".

Napoleon wasnt actually short if you REALLY look deep in the facts.
Pichuscrat 1 year ago
@Pichuscrat wow, you really missed our tag line, when we said that. He was probably around 5'6 or so...not short back then (although 3 inches shorter than Mrs. B) but surrounding himself with rather tall guards. Please read our taglines under the vids- since they serve as a disclaimer of sorts
