"These flights occur thousands of times a year."........ Yeah, and you're the one that CHOSE TO BUY A HOUSE THERE. So perhaps stop complaining and move somewhere quieter, NOT next to a defence air base. How hard is it?
to the guy holding the noise meter...... get a life you idiot the RAAF base has been there longer than you and your house. Your one of those Idiots That will buy or build a house next to or near a airport and then complain about the noise. Sucked in I hope the noise doubles for you.
ausiepride2005, you must be one of them, "Willy boys" naive and uninformed. Us, the tax payer, pay your wages and this is what you think of us. If your are RAAF this is not a good reflection on you and you don't deserve to be in it. I hope you bosses trace this and reprimand you.
@saltashlady Mate you're off your head. These blokes are training to fly aircraft that could very well save your sorry ass one day. This type of training is critical to a fighter pilot and without it the RAAF would lack the fundamental skills needed for the air to surface role. You have to realise that the pilots flying these very planes would put their lives on the line so that you can live yours. Salt Ash has been there since WWII, have you been? If not, then deal with it and don't complain.
@saltashlady You think defence force personell don't pay taxes too? So I don't see you can generalise the Australian tax payer and not include defence force members. Also unless you're earning over 120,000 then shut up, because on average RAAF pilots earn around that if not more, so they're putting more money into the economy then you are. Secondly, have some respect, RAAF pilots go through a lot, they get called up in the middle of the night to leave their family and go to a war zone.
364 days out of the year people are complaining about the noise from williamtown raaf base. the one day there is an air show on, 50,000 people show up. awkward.
@NeilJB - congratulations. About time we had someone that knows the issues and can speak with some authority on the subject (35 yrs in RAAF and a Masters in Defence Studies). Keep up the great work. You are doing more for our Democracy than those faceless boffins in Canberra that have imposed this injustice on Australian citizens. The Salt Ash Range is a relic of the past and will not be suitable for the JSF. Keep the Base but don't ever use the JSF at this antiquated weapons range.
@Tomcatsbaby, if you want to learn some facts about the various issues, rather than just shooting from the hip, Google:
Air Power Australia
and:
SafeEars
Lots of relevant info in those sites. In Air Power Australia's site, look in the NOTAMs section for JSF and the opposition, mostly Russian-made. Very interesting reading.
@Tomcatsbaby, RAAF can co-exist with the people in this area, and get all the necessary training done. It just requires a bit of forethought and effort from them to allow it to happen. The F-35 isn't going to do bombing practice at Saltash - they don't do eyeball low-level bombing any more, it's all precision guided stuff. As for air-to-ground gunnery, they intend to practice it, but in reality, will the RAAF risk $200M so close to the odd lucky shot from the ground?
@Tomcatsbaby, re whinging. I'm all for a capable ADF, you'll not find a more passionate supporter of a strong ADO than myself. My beef is with bureaucrats who think they can destroy the lives of Australian Citizens with impunity. One of the principles that I, and so many other members of the ADF were and are committed to, is the right to stand up and have your say when you believe that you have been wronged, without fear of being shot or thrown into jail. That's fair, isn't it?
@Tomcatsbaby, on the subject of research, try doing a bit of your own into just what we will be getting for $200 million each - a plane that doesn't stack up well against other aircraft that may be arriving in the region soon. The F-35 tries to do too many things and ends up doing none of them well. As a multi-role aircraft, it is subject to conflicting design criteria that guarantee it cannot do any of its tasks well. Australia is in great danger of losing the regional edge we used to have.
@Tomcatsbaby, I don't see why you think I'm suggesting the RAAF actually go and buy a bunch of Kittyhawks (not available since about 1945, but I think even you know that too). If you actually READ all the posts below you might start to understand that for most of the people it's not about the RAAF or the noise - it's about bureaucracy dudding Australian citizens. 35 years in the RAAF and a Master's Degree in Defence Studies from ADFA? I think I know what I'm moving into. Do you?
Regarding the argument 'the RAAF was there first', well, that's true to a degree, but in 1945 the RAAF was 'there' with Kittyhawks and other piston-engined aircraft. Personally, I'd love to hear the sound of a V-12 Allison over the range. But I'm afraid the 'here first' argument gets re-set every time a noisier aircraft comes along.
So your suggest that our Air Force replaces its ageing F/A-18's with WW2 aircraft instead of superior technology. You are a bloody dreamer mate. Do your research and know what your moving into, and let our pilots and our Air Force train for what they have to do.
This country is turning into a group of F***ing wingers.. honestly.
@Jobantus, I chose to live here too. When I was buying, I knew that the RAAF was nearby. I should know, I was in the RAAF for 35 years and a fair bit of that at Williamtown. Before I bought I checked for the usual things like mine subsidence, flooding, and noise. My S149 certificate says 'not noise affected'. And my house and land wasn't cheap either. People are complaining because, in some cases, uncaring bureaucrats have reduced their property value and life savings to nothing.
@Jobantus, I live in Medowie too, and I don't mind the noise at all. The problem is that the Council has put building restrictions on quite a bit of Medowie land in response to the much-louder JSF that will (might) arrive in a few years time. Have you checked your land against the ANEF2025 maps? You might be in for a surprise.
Yeah look I have looked at this and I understand what is occuring. For me, I take this in my stride. I CHOSE to live there. I accept that this decision to do so brings with it all that is entailed in living near a military airbase. I do appreciate that the more rabid protesters are in the minority and I am confident that a amicable solution will present itself. I just dont think that the level of compensation they are crying for is warranted. I appreciate your views however. Thanks
Well all I can do is echo the sentiments of the MAJORITY of people living in Newcastle. I live and work in Medowie and find that the aircraft noise is not THAT intrusive!! I simply do not understand this. Everyone of these "residents' have moved in or bought their homes with the knowledge that their house shared a flightpath with a military airbase!! WHY do they deserve compensation for decisions of their own making?? I find it absolutley ludicrous-it is completely un Australian!!! Grow up !!
And finally, there are solutions to many of the problems. Very few of the people involved in the class action want the RAAF to move. They just want to have their rights as Australian citizens recognised. Most of them have a statement from Council that says their property was not affected by noise when they bought it. No Government department, Defence or otherwise, has the right to arbitrarily devalue someone's property without taking some responsibility.
I’d love to have someone explain to me what that ‘there’ really is. Is it just Williamtown, or Saltash, Medowie, or Raymond Terrace? Or does it include Karuah, Oyster Cove, or Swan Bay? Might it go to Bulahdelah and Maitland in the future? The problem is, ‘there’ seems to expand every time the RAAF gets a noisier aircraft. Some of the land affected by this new plane is nowhere near Williamtown - for example, Brandy Hill. Does 'there' include the whole Hunter Valley?
This problem is much bigger than Saltash. A lot of people in Raymond Terrace are affected and Raymond Terrace has been there for 100 years longer than the RAAF.
Funny how this all started about land valuation dropping(new jetplane), & not being able to extened on your own home or even worse, not able to rebuild after your home was destroyed by fire. That is the real issue! I was at one of the first meetings (500+ ppl) & noise was not the issue. Small group of people have taken this over & turned it into something it's not. I have lived in Raymond Tce all my life, bought a house, even worked @ the RAAF base. Fully support RAAF. PSC 2 blame in land $ drop
Yay for the newspaper causing a bunch of people to find your video and say what everyone no doubt thought when reading the article. The base was there before you, you bought knowing it was there so stop your whinging!!!
No one forced you to buy a house near an air weapons range and an air force base, did they? They're not going to stop training pilots to defend the country, no matter how much you stamp your foot and hold your breath.
Stop your whinging! You chose to live there....the base was there well before you. You should have realised this!! You should be greatfull that we have these men and women risking their lives to protect our way of life and in doing so give you the right to make stupid comments in your video!
Whats next?.... Try to ban cars and trucks from driving past your house because they make too much noise?
To that person that flagged Petkez's comment has spam, what was wrong with Petkez's comment (as explained by a newspaper)?
All he/she was doing was viewing the other side of an issue. And Petkez is correct, why move there knowing about the RAAF Base? (Corrected a few issues)
Having lived under the flight path of Kingsford Smith this is nothing. Furthermore why live in an area that has been subjected to noise from military activities for 70 years?
Ah the peaceful, semi rural nature. Sounds great. Yeah doesn't work like that. Research the area before moving.
Also what is council doing allowing for developments in the area anyway?
I have recorded 115 military jets in 90 min, over my home in Salt Ash. It is like a war zone. Low flying military jets flying as low as 100m at 100% power, attaching a small target less then 1 k from my home. Firing guns and dropping bombs. The noise is unbelievable. You don't need to go overseas to experience this just come to Salt Ash NSW.
@befrenda - You don't need an expensive decibel reader - there's an iPhone app called SPL Meter which does a perfectly accurate job of doing the same thing. It's about $5.
FYI...exposure to 100 dB noise for more than 15 minutes can cause permanent hearing damage; 103 dB is twice as loud, so noise at that level can cause damage after half as long, or seven and a half minutes. Chances are you can't even hear the difference between 100 dB and 103 dB, so when you're dealing with noise at that level, it's safest just to wear hearing protection no matter how long you're going to be exposed.
Williamstown has been there since 1941! How long have you? It's your job to do your homework before purchasing a house in that area! So don't cry when you didn't!
I hope you sleep well at night under that blanket of freedom the boys are providing:)
