This game was mindblowing to the 10 year old me but now it looks like shit. I seem to remember it was too hard to be much fun on a home console, in the arcade that makes sense but not on Coleco, pissed me off I couldn't get very far ever.

I saved my paperboy earnings to by the Colecovision in 1983, and i still remember plunking $50.00 down for Zaxxon. 50 bucks then would be like 150 dollars today, or both MW3 & BBC3 today. I still play Defender on my Colecovision with my son today, Nearly 30 yrs later it still works perfectly.

Was watching a show yesterday from 1982 with an episode that had to do with videogame programmers who owned an arcade (and had it rigged to turn on all the games when somebody tried to break in). The first game I spotted was ZAXXON! and here's a review of it, coincidentally. Either that or Mark sent a message to the past to have it displayed so I would see it in the future (the present) so it would freak me out! You win this round, Mark. Also, so awesome they put it on Sonic's U.C.

Mine keeps running all shity and the pixels are everywhere and it seems the actualy programs aren't running properly on the games, like the sprites just reset to a certain point randomly. Any help?

It seems like the contacts on your modules are the problem. Aftte all the years oxidation could be a problem. But Mark has a solution even for that :)

Just search for "classic game room clean" in youtube and you will find it. Instead of isopropanol you can also use special contact cleaner, here in germany there is one called "contact 60" and another one called "teslanol". But the stuff Mark is using also works just fine!

Actually, now that I look at it again, it has an altitude meter. What I now recall using the shadow for was more to show your lateral position relative to the ground because it was not always apparent when you were up high.

For that reason, it was especially tricky shooting the enemy ships between the "islands" when you are in open space with no shadow on the ground to help judge your lateral position.

I recall how Zaxxon (in my case in the arcade) was really different in its "3D" perspective, but also really difficult to get used to.

You had to use the ships shadow on the ground to judge your altitude which took some getting used to.

I later had a game on the Atari 800 called Blue Max that took a similar approach with the plane flying diagonally and a 3D perspective. It also used the device of showing the plane's shadow on the ground. And it had bombs as well as guns adding a new element.

I just looked it up, and the controller I mentioned was called the "Super Action Controller." What a name.

Mark, if you can get your hands on one, it would make for an interesting hardware review. I highly recommend trying while playing Frontline on the ColecoVision if you have or can get that game.

I wish I had them to lend you. Maybe my cousin can lend you one if he held onto his old Colecovision rig.

When I was a kid, I had an Atari 2600 and my cousins had a Magnavox Odyssey 2. I remember thinking how much better MY game system was.

Then my cousins got a Colecovision and I was SO jealous.

It's true. Colecovision really was damned close to the arcade originals especially compared to the 2600,

Colecovision also had a really cool controller with directional knobs integrated with the joysticks (not the regular controller Mark mentions) and it was great for playing Frontline.

When I was a kid, one year on Christmas, my parents got me 4 or 5 Colecovision games. It was awesome, but strange, since I DIDN'T HAVE a Colecovision! Later that night, when we got to my grandparents house, to open presents there, I got the actual game system (Which came with Donkey Kong!) One of the best childhood Christmas's I had. I highly recommend the Colecovision system! :) I hated my Atari, cause the games never looked right. But that all changed when I got my Coleco! Popeye ruled on it!

Zaxxon was one of the few Colecovision games that really didn't come close to replicating the arcade graphics, yet it still blew everyone away. On the other hand it wasn't until years later that an arcade perfect port came out. So for a long time this was the best version.
