Left Hand Position For Guitarists

Hey thanks alot I'm just getting started and was hurting for some proper education on how to position my hand.

So is it okay to change the position of you thumb depending on whether you have to stretch your fingers or not? or should your thumb always be in the middle of the back of the neck?
