  • i want that snare

  • The first 1:40 is the definition of "smooth."

  • Is he playing a Novax 6?

  • I still wonder to this day why he didn't keep this song acoustic like on Inside Wants Out.

It's pretty badass how this intro is kind of what he play on the acoustic version on Where The Light Is.

  • HOLY FUCKZOIDSSS. THE BASSIST IS DOPE

  • If the drummer would really suck, john mayer wouldn't ask him in his band, or am I wrong?

  • 23metalmaniac I am not talking about john mayer read the post better.

  • awesome thanks man

  • has anyone even figured out the very beginning to this version the part right after he does the bass intro??

  • @RoughstockRider88 He plays 7th fret d and b strings slide it up to 8 and 10th fret. Using histhumb to hit 0, 7 , 10 on the Low C

  • @OttoAndMusic you pluck the d and b string up while playing the bass part with your thumb am i right or wrong?

  • @RoughstockRider88 Yes, the bass part is played with the thumb. You want to finger pick this all, no picks involved :)

  • anyone know the name of the drummer?

  • @pantera6 According to Wiki, Stephen Chopek.

  • I'm addicted to the licks at 1:13- 1:22. ADDICTED.

  • Cant the girls just shut up? -.-'

  • is 2:16 to 2:22 a Sting song?

  • Gonna take one of those moments. It's okay cause I'm 4 beers deep. But every time I hear this song it reminds me of the love of my life. Which is sad to say considering the lyrical content. Such is life, I suppose.

  • the 1 dislike is from argon.

  • Hahaha I love the bass player. Just chillen hittn his notes.

  • I'm really looking forward to see how his playing evolves in the next decade or so. Hopefully, we'll have a chance to hear it. I say this because I really like his style as is, and I'm thinking it will only grow to be more complex and interesting or expressive. Possibly a real great guitarist of our times to be remembered.

  • @flimflam0069 Keep in mind this video is from 2002, so it;s already been 9 years. 1:13 to 1:22 IS MY FAVORITE PART OF THIS VIDEO.

  • 1:15

    The face!

  • i listen to this live song so much that i don't like the studio version anymore

the begin is the best with all that solo's

  • JM is feelin' this shit!

  • the drum solo is my favorite part. its a very tight and well executed solo

  • how do you write this stuff? crazy skills

  • Gonna spend a lifetime givin it back, i wonder how many people at this concert got the reference. I dig this song!

  • Definitely my favorite version of this song

  • The drummer ruined his spotlight by playing what is the easiest thing to play on the drums.....

  • @pharoah246 "simplicity is not stupidity"

  • Let's say... the guy's not Neil Peart but he quite knows how to drum

  • probably been said millions of times but man what an awesome guitar!

  • One big idiot dislike this.. Why??

  • @Gregospinky it looks like a ovation viper but im not sure

  • The crowd is awful in the sense that girls yell all the time...

  • I love his sex face

  • James Brown's Get on the Good Foot at 1:56 haha

  • Steve Jordan just has this groove to his drumming that makes you raise your eyebrows like "Well that's different" and this guy's just cliche...

  • that shirt is sex.

  • 00:00 - 10:36 That's the best part.

  • he looks like a hunchback at 6:29

  • the drummer looks like an alien

  • i think there's nothing wrong with the drummers performance. just look at the overall performance. remember a good musician doesn't need to be a flashy player. just do the thing that would make a song sound good. even though your just playing three chords on it.

  • @Maruceroooo @fantinmoreno

    Oh guys.

Conversations like that just make me cry.

    I love this world.

  • why the heck is john playing the piano...

  • Everybody who's complaining about the drummer just don't know what drumming is... this guy did a nice solo, with great beats and fills and you say that he was a robot?! YOU DON'T KNOW NOTHING ABOUT DRUMS SO DON'T SAY WHAT YOU DON'T KNOW!!

  • @Maruceroooo hey dude! Calm down... I've been a drummer for 10 years now, don't wanna say I'm the best or whatever, but I DO know what I'm talking about...

And if you like this drummer, that's perfectly ok with me. That was just my opinion...

    Cheers

  • @fantinmoreno Ok, maybe I overreacted a little, but his body language say nothing about his drum skills... If you're a drummer for that long you know that he's good. Of course, not the best, but he's a good drummer.

If you're comparing him with the others JM's drummers, well.. as you said, it's your opinion and I respect that.

  • @Maruceroooo well it has not only smth to do with his body language... He's perfectly in the tempo that's true, but almost too much in my opinion. I don't know how to explain -not being an English Speaker basically doesn't really help with vocabulary haha- but he lacks FEELING in my opinion, and we can hear that in his sound a lot. He hits hard, but without emotion...

But he's good nonetheless. He wouldn't have played with JM if he was a bad drummer :)

  • @fantinmoreno Don't worry, english is not my primary language also, but I did get it what you mean. To be honest, I didn't see the "heart" in his solo too..

I saw one of your videos and you really know what you were doing, so I apologize for saying all that stuff.. I thought that you were one of the haters that just justify his arguments by the "look".

That was a really constructive conversation, something rare in youtube, lol.

  • @Maruceroooo haha it's totally okay man ;)

it's true that there are too many haters on youtube, it's okay that you were misunderstood ^^

Glad we had this exchange! Cheers

  • who is the bassist?

  • @MrGeLeFu - David LaBruyere

  • @mayergeek cool! thanks

  • This drummer has a really nice backbeat. Who is he?

  • @dudy71 stephen chopek

  • Comment removed

  • Damn, too bad he got rid of this drummer. He fit this genre way better than JJ Johnson even came close to.

  • Comment removed

  • his making out with mic! :))

  • does anybody know what pedal John is using for the rotary effect?

  • Watch the whole DVD and you can see Mayer struggling a bit with his voice with the later songs. This was I think was an encore, and his voice is just hoarse here, comparing to his other, more recent live performances, he got better with dealing with it.

  • I love John Mayer. Hes one of my leaders when it comes to guitar playing and music all round.

but you gotta admit, sometimes his guitar playing faces are like orgasm faces right? :):):):):):):):):):):):):):)

  • nice buddy rich phrasing in the beginning of the bass solo.

  • Super good!!!!!!! Very nice playing!

  • but hes an ace drummer!

  • @rory6087 Everybody says he's worse than Steve jordan or J.J Johnson, and he does not play with any feeling, they think so because he doesn't make the ugly ''I feel the music'' faces.

Bullshit, he is an ace indeed, awesome playing.

  • @johnnnybruce I completely agree!

  • @johnnnybruce

he always makes funny faces, what are u talking about?

  • @fish5141

o i realize now ur talking about the drummer not JM hahaha

  • @johnnnybruce truly. He plays tight. Hes just not as known, ppl perfer a fimailiar face. althought im glad john got a different drummer. I like Steve the best.

  • @johnnnybruce

are you kidding me? he makes all the 'I feel the music' faces possible while playing...great guitarist though...:P

  • @johnnnybruce the reason why he doesn't make the ugly "i feel the music" face is because he doesn't feel the music, which is why he's worse.

  • Just gotta love the funkiness of this whole groove. For a blues player, this guy can really funk!!

  • I've got both 'Any Given Thursday' and 'Where the Light Is' (no biggy, they're both on YT:) ) and compared to Continuum era - the early JM looks, hm, maybe not like a roadie, but like Just-A-Dude.

You get the point, you know Stu Hamm, he is a virtuoso, but, judging by appearance, you wouldn't tell...

Stephen Chopek on drums, Boys and Girls!

  • This isn't Stu Hamm. Stu is quite a bit older. I think you better check him out. stu has a rounder face and his hair is quite a bit more that this cat, whom by the way is very good.

  • This skin head drummer is damnnnnnnn good!

  • @mutleyrj

    he lloks like a robot!!

    haha

  • The best your right

  • FUCK THOSE DAMN GIRLS

  • That drummer is such a groove killer..

  • to answer 2 question:

    @salm37

    -its drop C tuning

    @pcalloni

-yes, there are angled frets. It is still a guitar. The reason is so that the low string doesn't rattle and buzz while it's tuned soooo low.

  • @TheKylesMusic

yeah drop c is everything tuned down a whole tone, then then bass e (then d) is then dropped a further tone to c

this is just standard tuning with the bass e dropped to c

  • Is that standard tuning or is it drop d?

  • @salm37 The low E is tuned to C and the rest are standard

  • @salm37

    drop c

  • Did anyone notice that his guitar has angled frets?! What kind of instrument is that?

  • @pcalloni2 they are called fanned frets and it's Novax Expressions guitar. so his low C string doesn't buzz

  • It's a novax xr 6 string.

  • little fast eh?

  • I love how he's playing it all Charlie Hunter style with the bass and guitar elements and techniques mixed together.

  • this song is so underrated i love both versions

  • soooooooo true

  • I love that John Mayer can do the same set list for every concert but still makes each show unique.

  • is that a parker guitar???

  • that drummer is sick

    try it guys

listen to the album version though

you hear a lot better what he's doing

but then, i agree, JJ johnson and steve Jordan are beasts!

  • He was not the drummer for room for squares, it was Nir Z.

  • @JimiJordan22 yes you're right man! ;) I love Steve Jordan :D

  • God I hate this drummer....

  • God I agree...

  • this drummer is a robot, I'm so happy that JM got JJ Johnson and Steve Jordan later.

  • @fantinmoreno Very true! I didnt like JM by the 1st time I heard him due to this drummer...he is a freaking robot, no feeling at all...JJ and Jordan are the real deal!

  • @fantinmoreno his last name (Chopek) fits his style. But it's pronounciation is same as for suppository in Polish. Just a trivium.

  • @fantinmoreno and Keith Carlock for the current tour!

  • @bamwow09 oh come on! seriously??? he doesn't hire the worse ones then :D

  • @fantinmoreno

I agree! JJ Johnson and Steve Jordan is the real deal:)

  • @fantinmoreno and now keith carlock

  • @fantinmoreno He's actually very good pretty close to jj johnson

  • @fantinmoreno You're obviously not a drummer are ya? This guy has chops. While Steve Jordan is...well...Steve Jordan and there's no arguing his greatness, Stephen Chopek is no slouch either and I'd say he fits John Mayer's style pretty nicely.

  • @drumrkane well, I actually am a drummer, my channel's here if you need a proof.

Chopek has chops for sure, It's just his way of playing, of hitting the drumkit, which makes me feel like he's a robot.

But it's just a matter of taste to like a drummer's style of playing or not, so I can understand you like Chopek!

    Cheers!

    (I loved LaBruyere though!)

  • @fantinmoreno couldnt have put it better myself.

  • JM can be a one man band

  • @hyper316 naw, hes got such a good band. no doubt hes good but cant sound this good himself.

  • @japneezdrummer

hm watch the live in LA version he sings much better in it. In my opinion it sounds even better than this!

  • i like that bassist.

  • I'm not a huge fan of Any Given Thursday, because my favorite JM music is the Trio stuff and the Continuum stuff (although Neon is one of my favorites, and there are a lot of other good ones on his first two CDs), but I gotta say, it has by far the best version of Neon and Covered in Rain.

  • It kinda like where the light is neon better, but then i watch this one and im not toos ure

  • Yeah I like the where the light is one a lot, but I think they can't even be compared, because it's acoustic.

  • good point, i didnt think about that

  • it's the best music video I've seen . it's wonderful

  • trying to figure this out on guitar

  • good luck

  • drop your low e to a c!

  • thanks!

  • Yeah I'm trying to figure out David's bass solo. That whole jam has so much cool jazzy dissonance. I fucking love it. David uses a lot of diminished fifths in his solo.

  • i have played the drums for a while and this is pretty hard for me.

  • first time see him on keyboard

  • yeh man anyone who says mayer cant play needs to dig this Jazz is one if not thee hardest musical style for guitar or any instrument n theory for that matter its a nice blues jazz hybrid intro ,

  • Peeeeeeeeeeeeerfect!

  • awesome!!!!
