@sissieurope in southeastern europe in the balkans there was conflict as recently as the 1990s and there is tension in other parts of europe as well. germany, italy, britain, the netherlands and france have muslims and there seems to be some tensions within those communities as well. further, as you say we will see how it turns out in the future.

@sissieurope yes, i am aware that there are serious issues in various parts of europe and in certain cities of The United States. it is a concern because of my home town there are already tensions of various ethnicities and when religious intolerance is put into the mix it can be an extreme problem.

Of course, the real Cid was often villainous, and the real Ben Yusef was often heroic, but the movie has to color them purely good and evil. @4JBrewer It would be interesting to see a Muslim filmmaker of the status of Anthony Mann make an historical actioner about Ben Yusef, and color the Cid as a pure villain. Even Darth Vader, before he became Darth Vader, was a loving man who went the wrong path; ideologically, I'm not sure even Ben Yusef could be accused of that, as Muhammed did indeed command the spreading of Islam through conquest. Not substantially different from the evangelic commission of Jesus to the disciples.

I'm Spanish and,although he was a thief and kind of villain he became an icon in the Spanish history.he wasn't as loyal as many may think he was,but in the end of the day he gave his life for Spain and all what he did was forgotten.Viva El Cid,his horse (Babieca)which was buried with honours and which has a monolith to be remembered,and of course his sword(Tizona)which is in a museum in the Spanish city of Burgos.another spanish knight lived before el cid,Don Pelayo,check him out on internet.
