It's a good idea, but students who were focused on you may become distracted by focusing on the disruptive students as you stand next to them. What I mean is that you're giving more attention to the disruptive behaviour. This would definitely happen where I teach.
@crackerass01 that would definately happen at any of my schools...if a kid is aiming to disrupt, standing next to them may add fuel to the fire, and you may find yourself the but of jokes.

I like these tips, I have noticed that many teachers forget that proximity is an important tool in the teacher's bag of tricks.
