um....isnt your drywall patch sticking out futher than your wall a problem? When that happens to me i take a fine grit sandpaper and kinda file down the backside of the patch until it becomes a LITTLE bit thinner so as to compensate for the length the patch will pertrude from the wall.
That's a good idea. You can also notch a little more out of the wood where the nail plate goes which is what I usually do.
