You just named some of the cheesiest, most awful songwriters in history. Sure, they wank on a guitar better than 99% of other guitarists, but they can't write interesting music without shoveling 8,000 notes down a listener's ear in the course of one solo, not to mention not one single note played carries any emotion with it. David Gilmour can pull more emotion and beauty out of one note than Steve Vai's can out of his entire catalog.
Don't draw a comparison! Robert's style is unique! His way to play guitar is incomparable wonderful. Ok, I'm a Cure-Fan since I was 4, what else shall I think and feel ;-)

The worst thing is not that he cant play fast , but that he has been doing the same thing over 30 years.
