I have five American cocker spaniels. Each has his own personality and character. They have one common trait: they love to exercize (I regularly walk them twice a day more or less 40 minutes a walk). From what I've observed and read the English cocker is as lively and active (perhaps even more!). Of course they are affectionate and cuddly dogs but do not appreciate being left alone for long periods (more than 3 hours for example).

I want a dog that won't leave my side or lap while I'm at home but can handle a few hours everyday with the rest of the family while I'm at school. I want an obedient dog that is not too hard to train. As i mentioned already I really want a dog that has lap dog traits. Should I get a West Highland Terrier or an English Cocker Spaniel? I'd prefer answers from people who own either of the breeds. Thanks.

A companion for your cocker is an excellent idea. Hold in mind two things: recognize the right for your new comer to have HIS place in your house and in your heart while protecting your older one from the puppies sometime overbearing presence and invasion. Expect at least two weeks of conflicts between them (growling, agressiveness, impatience, intolerance to the others presence, etc).The latters will recede eventually (9 times out of 10) and change into a beautiful and playful companionship

@camelle104 This is wonderful advice! I got my cockers (boy & girl) maybe 6 months apart (now 9 months, and 1 year & 4 months old) they get along wonderfully! Getting a companion is fantastic, especially when you aren't feeling well enough to go for a walk. When that happens I just open up the door and off the two go to play in the yard for hours. Our problem is the male has an "alpha" personality. he no longer growls at us but steals the girl's toys from her and plays rough. fixing it tho!

@KitayLove i have a older cocker who is about 9 years old and a puppy who is 6 months now. at first it takes gettin uused to eachother but now they get along great. the older one is still the boss and the puppy respects that so they get along pretty well and the older one never plays much because he is not a pup but he actually will play with puppy sometimes but he just gets bored faster than the puppy does. i would recommend it. just let the puppy know that u r boss and the older dog is too,

I have a 12 year old black cocker,which i hunt partridge ,woodcock,and,duck with,and his tale is short ,I think he looks better, but i couldnt have cut it off though,I dont know if they put them asleep before or not., hope they do.

What a great pack you have! I love Cockers I almost adopted one but I ended up adopting a Cavalier instead. Cockers are one of my favorites but I can't afford to have their hair cut every other month...one day! Very cute pups!

Cocker's are the greatest breed EVER!! I have a boy, who looks a lot like the one in the video that is white and buff with the freckles! He is parti with white, buff and red and he is the love of my life! He is the second Cocker I have owned and I don't think I could ever get another breed! They are awesome! Such cute dogs. I had a cocker that looked exactly like the orange/brown one in this video. She passed away 2/9/09 at the age of 14, a few months shy of 15. They are wonderful dogs.
