Why did they change it at all? I never had a chance to go see the original and I was considering going to see this one, but I can't. I want to have good memories of RENT.
Is it weird that the only thing I /really/ don't like is the set? It's too "new". The great thing about the old set was how grungey it looked. I could get used to costumes and new actors but...the SET.
Saw it today too. It was amazing. I thought the staging and set was better than the original. I also enjoyed a lot of the characters more. Maureen was so amazing and different. The only characters i didn't enjoy were roger. But the projection they use and tightness of the set makes this such an amazing production of rent. Angel, mark, joanne, collins were all amazing. For those who think it's too soon for a revival, i disagree only after seeing it. the technical improvements are amazing.
I went today...It was amazing! I was second row center stage. I also got to meet MJ Rodriguez who played Angel. I loved how small it was it just felt more intimate.
Saw this cast yesterday. Ive seen Rent for years with the original cast and the final cast and this cast is great! They are really good, especially Collins
I might get fed to the sharks for saying this, but...I really like this production. True, nothing will top the original, but the changes are nice. Adam Chanler-Berat is phenomenal as Mark (my new favorite) and Annaleigh and Corbin are gorgeous together. I love the costumes and setting changes. Its a revival. Not everything has to be the same. Revivals are about changing some material to keep it fresh and interesting
omg this is just awful.... i played angel in rent.... she's supposed to be the craziest, outgoing kool party maniac person but at the smae time classy and elegant. This angel looks cheap and disgusting
They suck like seriously how can you change the words to songs. And they all act like actors not like they are characters but just normal people that are singing songs.
Okay, yes, the costumes and the lighting are awesome. Yes, Angel and Collins are fantastic. Mark has a nice voice. Roger has the looks he needs to be Roger. Et cetera. BUT...
its a revival...its not supposed to be like the original...the costumes, choreography, etc should be different. if you don't like it then don't go see it or watch these videos!
I thought I wouldn't like the costumes and the flashier lighting but i thought all the new lighting and production enhanced the production. For "what you own" they had news reels going and to me that connected me to the time period more than the other show. I loved loved loved ANGEL, he was better than any Angel I've seen. This is my opinion but i beg u do not judge before you know
I am a gigantic Renthead. I saw the OB show and then saw the offbroadway show and I'm shocked to say I liked it as much if not more than the original. I know you cant beat the original but honestly RENT offbroadway was epic and i recommend you see the show before you judge.
Saw the revial a few weeks ago and thought it was great! Saw these videos just now and like all of you, i was disappointed. As someone previously said, Rent is a show that you simply cant understand unless you are in the theatre, part of the audience, watching and engaging in it. Sure, you can sit on YouTube and judge these actors, but theatre was never meant to be filmed. I thought this was a wonderful revival that shouldnt be hated on until one actually sees it live. Very talented, young cast!
I've obsessed over the original (and closing) cast on youtube and I love them. While watching these videos online it doesnt seem like the revival's very good, but in person it was AMAZING when I saw it a few weeks ago. Just sayin, dont judge unless youve seen it properly
I think Rent is a show you need to see live for any justice. Something here sounds a bit off but thats probably because you arent sitting there in the theatre PLUS Annaleigh Ashford is in it so its got to be friggen amazing.
i really don't like this. i mean, i understand it's just a preview, but i fell like it's too modern for the show. maybe i'm just a sap for the original, but i don't feel like it's too good.
i love the new set, angel (and his costumes) are freaking FIERCE, but i'm not sure about this one. i think that the original is so great, plus everyone is so attached to it, that it's really hard to reinvent the production. but i'll have to see it before i judge it.
Im happy, from the comments it seems outstanding but from the video it seems okay. Imma go with the commants. I CANT BELIEVE IM GOING TO SEE THIS!!!!! *sobs* best birthday present ever.
i saw it two weeks ago and this preview does NOT give it justice!!! i thought i was phenomenal!!! RENT is the kind of show where i feel you can either nail it or or severely fuck it up and they nailed it in my opinion. i especially loved Annaleigh Ashford as Maureen and Adam Chanler-Berat as Mark! FABULOUS show, crap preview...fin.
i feel like its too quiet...its not as in your face as in should be. im not denying the talent of the actors i just personally dont think it gives the original play justice.
@eisnergurlzz58 Honestly, it does seem quiet, but I just saw it Saturday and, because it is in a smaller theater, and maybe some other factors, it is very in your face and loud. Not at all like the video.
@eisnergurlzz58 OMGGG!!!! Thats what i was looking for. when i was watching this and listening to it. I was like it doesnt sound like it has enough...idk. Like its not loud enough. and I couldnt think of it. yeah there not doing it justice. its supposed to be like BAM! and its all new. I prefer the old version. but eh... you never know.
@eisnergurlzz58 I think this is quite true. I mean the concept of the show being really in your face was what gave the OBC a type of amazing theatrics essence, something admitedly is hard to come by now a days...
@eisnergurlzz58 I totally see what your saying but it's weird because I saw it this week and it was wayyyy louder than it sounds in this video. this video makes it sound subdued and muted, but it person it's just as loud and in your face as the original! you're right though, in this video la vie boheme sounds like whispering, but in the theatre it was super loud and pumped up!
I am a huge rent fan. When i saw online that there was a revival, i rushed to see what it was like. This was niot what i was expecting. I think that it was a clever idea tontry to chsnge the old rent up, new costumes, set, and lights, but i think the past productions are much better. I am notntrying to bash thisnproduction, i still love rent, i just prefer the original portrayals. The way the actors play the characters is very different than past casts, although actors should makentheir charact
@merbethmango Honestly i think the change in costumes is great. I love Rent but id always want to look at a Stereotypical Mark, Roger, Mimi, etc. Having a difference in costume design makes things fresh and new. Being that I have seen Rent so many times new designs make things more interesting and it still has some inspiration from the orignal cast
Saw the Broadway production five years ago. Saw this last night. I have to say, the re-imagined direction and costumes worked wonders. This is coming from a theater snob: This production was pretty damn incredible. Angel and Collins were the best parts.
Adam Chanler-Berat, Annaleigh Ashford, and Marcus Paul James...seriously, almost too much awesomeness for one video. And the female soloist in Seasons of Love - girl, you keep on doing your thing!
@Kassaremidybelllynn Although unfortunately, I have to agree, this needs work. Not gritty and real-life enough. I'm good with the cast, as I stated before (still fangirling over the awesomeness of Adam, Annaleigh, and Marcus), but let's work on the other stuff now.
It's not HORRIBLE, but I have to admit, it could be better. The thing is though is that I believe that Jonothan Larson had a certain vision of how RENT was to be, and I don't think this modern-y new set and costumes and flashy-ness and all that jazz was it. RENT is supposed to be tough and edgy, not this...
Don't hate me though, this is just my opinion as a die-hard RENThead
PS The Roger and Mark could DEFINITELY be better :/
Is there video of Take me Or leave me or Muareen's whole performance art protest bit? Annaleigh is the main thing I'm interested in about this revival.
I don't know what the new Rent is like, but from the previews it seems that it's a little more staged than the original . Anyways I'm still happy it's back I really curious on how it turns out!!=D
The man playing Mark is great. But, honestly... this is just a mess. It was too soon for a revival, and this is just proof. The set and the costumes are both total disasters. This is just further ruining a legacy that the original created. That raw edge in Daphne's voice or the cheap feel of the costumes just isn't there. This looks like Halloween on stage.
Ok...Isn't Angel supposed to be a Drag Queen? The costume that she's wearing in this La vie Boheme, while extremely flamboyant, is not a drag costume at all.
@LeeExe This is from a New York Times Article... The quote is from the director:
"I wanted our new Angel to be a bit more of a club kid and to be dressed more male, so it would be very clear to audiences that Angel and his lover, Tom Collins, are two men in a relationship,” Mr. Greif said. “I think the original ‘Rent’ became a little safe in the sense that audiences could easily just assume that Angel was played by a woman.”
@college023 Oh, well, that's his opinion and I'm not going to trash without watching the show.
However, for the entire second act, apart from "A Happy new Year", Angel isn't in drag, right? I mean, I don't know in the obc, but in the live on broadway recording, she just wear a tank top, so it's clear that it's a man playing Angel. Also, one of Collin's lines are "I like boys" and Angel's response is "Boys like me". So it was pretty clear to me that they were "two men in a relationship"
I was there for opening night! These videos make them sound weaker. You must watch it live. It was phenomenal! All cast members bring a new flavor to these iconic roles. Absolute brilliance.
The problem with what they're trying to do here is they're trying to make Rent Modern. Rent Doesn't belong in 2011, it's a period piece. People will go see Rent because it's rent, not because you throw in random extravagant costumes. And if they don't, oh well...rent has done 15 brilliant years and changed a many of people's lives including mine, and i respect if it's its time to go. But don't do this to it, don't make rent into something it's not. Mark stays mark, scarf and all. simple as that.
@80sbrilliance That's ridiculous, first of all it's still set in the 90's and it’s still a period piece. You just said that people will see Rent because it's Rent and you're right, the most important thing is the score and the book which hasn't changed. If you’re’ saying that you don't support Rents return because Mark doesn't have a scarf, you're an idiot.
@Platinum400 Ok, so you complely missed my point. It's not because of something as medicore as a scarf, it's what that they're trying to make it modern, so it appeals to the 2011 crowd. But maybe it's not meant for that. that's all I was saying, not to sound "idiotic" or anything.
@80sbrilliance Okay but you still mentioned the scarf which sounded strange to me because I find it insignificant in any way. I've seen the production live and yes they've changed some things and I don't personally care for some of these cast members but the songs and ultimate message of Rent is still the same and to me that's all that matters.
@Platinum400 you idiot! rent is set in the 80's E-I-G-H-T-I-E-S! NOT IN THE 90'S i sugesst YOU know before speaking! rent is set in the LATE E-I-G-H-T-I-E-S 1990 IDIOT!
@oNegLeEk This version is set in the 90's...... and in the original RENT the "late 80's" could be1989 so if they celebrate new years during the show it could have been in the year 1990, idiot.
uggggh....get shingledecker out of there :/ I was hoping this cast would bring it back but i guess not. Hopefully I'll get to see live and not just base it off of a few clips, hope they can change my mind!!
The sound mixing is all a bit lackluster, I think that's the problem more than the singing. It makes some of them sound weak and dull because their mics aren't loud enough.
When I first saw this, I was not at all impressed. But remember, the show hasn't even had its official opening yet, so the cast is still feeling things out and getting themselves comfortable. Try not to judge the production just by this video. I saw it live and went into the show with low expectations because of these clips, but it was phenomenal. Every single cast member was incredibly talented. It's impossible to capture all of the magic in a 3 minute video.
The last time I saw Rent on Broadway Adam and Anthony reprised their roles. I even met Anthony. I'm going to try to be fair because I really love Rent.
They dont seem all too into it in certain parts. The costume change has its positives and negatives. I adore this angel, but mark is.. eh. There singing kinda sucks, i hope there just getting over the flu or something =/
The costumes look more like caricatures than what the characters would actually wear. Some of the stuff doesn't even look 90s at all. The Mark's Mom and Others Character just went from edgey to slutty and Maureen has apparently decided to forget about performance art and pursue a career as a pirate. And yes, this Mark seems totally annoying.
The Mark is FANTASTIC. Annaleigh Ashford is precious. And I'm excited to see what she brings to Maureen. The Roger is...lacking. The Angel is good, but his new look...oy. The female soloist in Seasons of Love is so good! She went from belting to so tender. It was amazing! All in all, I'm excited to see what comes out of it! :D
come on guys. I loved the original Rent, but unfortunately things don't live forever. I didn't think it was that hard to get your head around, bearing in mind it gets brought up in the musical many times, 'No Day But Today', ring any bells? As for the performers, @WickedMusicalBuffalo I think it's very cruel to say the 'Adam isn't doing it for you', from 2:51 of clips, I would say that is incredibly Bigoted. The cast look fantastic. I think it's incompetent to compare them to the original.
@Wealllovechicken I'm not saying I don't like the production I just don't think Adam is a great Mark. I think they chose him because of his popularity from Next To Normal.
Well no, I strongly disagree with you, Adam states in an interview that during Next to Normal rehearsals, even before the N2N had even began, Michael Grief said to him that he would make a great Mark, I would like it but YT wont let me. So I don't think for one second that they gave him the role because of his popularity. Can I just ask have you seen this is new rent, because if you havent I don't you think you can say whether you like him or not, from 2:51 worth of clips. @WickedMusicalBuffalo
@Wealllovechicken It's alright that you disagree I just don't think Adam is a great Mark. Move on with your life now please I'm not going to keep replying to your stupid comments.
No, let me rephrase that for you, 'I don't think Adam is a great Mark, from the 2:51 minutes of clips, but once I've seen the rest of the 2 hours and 28 minutes, I might make another decision! I'm sorry I'm carrying this on, and I know everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I find your claim ridiculous when you havent seen the show and seen only 2:51 minutes. But you still haven't answered my question, have you seen this new rent, because if you have, it's okay @WickedMusicalBuffalo
Saw this production and it was fantastic. A BIG improvement on the original which I was not a fan of. In this smaller space, it is much more heartfelt and moving and the performers are terrific. But please do not base anything on these clips. They are by far the worst moments in the show. Unlike the clips, the show is not annoying and smug. Give it a chance. You will love it.
This preview makes me both "excited and scared" Excited that Rent is back, excited to see Adam, but scared that I cannot stop comparing Rent on Broadway to this, and I don't mean the sets, or even the cast, but just the whole thing, the original direction and staging is just so brilliant. Another sad thing, was the cast doesnt sound great, good, and maybe better in person, but some pitch issues, and some not so stand out voices. Still, I CANNOT wait to see RENT.
@WWEQAF I know what you mean, it can't beat the original (I have seen it & had the EXACT same concerns and excitement) but you actually get really into it when you actually see it. Its a really fresh new take on it & it was amazing to see. Adam doesn't disappoint (Although, it may just be me...but he still has some of the vulnerable "Henryness" about him) & Annaleigh ashford (Who i was a bit skeptic about, love her just wondered what she would be like as maureen) was amazing!!! It is FANTASTIC!!
it sounds really weird, i can't get used to this

RENT = My dream.
I'm so proud of the new cast :)
malcolmlewis013 6 months ago 2
I don't know what the new Rent is like, but from the previews it seems that it's a little more staged than the original . Anyways I'm still happy it's back I really curious on how it turns out!!=D

Seasons of love is probably the only thing that i think is pretty good...the rest of it needs some work, at least in my opinion
AlexPlowman 6 months ago
i think i just threw up in my mouth can you take this trash away and bring the real rent back not this piece of trash
oNegLeEk 6 months ago
The man playing Mark is great. But, honestly... this is just a mess. It was too soon for a revival, and this is just proof. The set and the costumes are both total disasters. This is just further ruining a legacy that the original created. That raw edge in Daphne's voice or the cheap feel of the costumes just isn't there. This looks like Halloween on stage.
8bittrauma 6 months ago
Ok...Isn't Angel supposed to be a Drag Queen? The costume that she's wearing in this La vie Boheme, while extremely flamboyant, is not a drag costume at all.
LeeExe 6 months ago
@LeeExe This is from a New York Times Article... The quote is from the director:
"I wanted our new Angel to be a bit more of a club kid and to be dressed more male, so it would be very clear to audiences that Angel and his lover, Tom Collins, are two men in a relationship,” Mr. Greif said. “I think the original ‘Rent’ became a little safe in the sense that audiences could easily just assume that Angel was played by a woman.”
college023 6 months ago

80sbrilliance 6 months ago 2
@80sbrilliance That's ridiculous, first of all it's still set in the 90's and it’s still a period piece. You just said that people will see Rent because it's Rent and you're right, the most important thing is the score and the book which hasn't changed. If you’re’ saying that you don't support Rents return because Mark doesn't have a scarf, you're an idiot.
Platinum400 6 months ago
@Platinum400 Ok, so you complely missed my point. It's not because of something as medicore as a scarf, it's what that they're trying to make it modern, so it appeals to the 2011 crowd. But maybe it's not meant for that. that's all I was saying, not to sound "idiotic" or anything.
80sbrilliance 6 months ago
@80sbrilliance Okay but you still mentioned the scarf which sounded strange to me because I find it insignificant in any way. I've seen the production live and yes they've changed some things and I don't personally care for some of these cast members but the songs and ultimate message of Rent is still the same and to me that's all that matters.
Platinum400 6 months ago
@Platinum400 you idiot! rent is set in the 80's E-I-G-H-T-I-E-S! NOT IN THE 90'S i sugesst YOU know before speaking! rent is set in the LATE E-I-G-H-T-I-E-S 1990 IDIOT!
oNegLeEk 6 months ago
@oNegLeEk This version is set in the 90's...... and in the original RENT the "late 80's" could be1989 so if they celebrate new years during the show it could have been in the year 1990, idiot.
Platinum400 6 months ago
@oNegLeEk Actually, the opening monologue spoken by Mark says it starts in 1991. :)

uggggh....get shingledecker out of there :/ I was hoping this cast would bring it back but i guess not. Hopefully I'll get to see live and not just base it off of a few clips, hope they can change my mind!!
laughpro3 6 months ago
Question: Did Shingledecker use his head voice at the end of "Rent" the title song?

This video is not half as good as the show is live.

just4erika 6 months ago
This video doesn't do this production justice at all. I just saw the show, and it was way better then this makes it look.
1ReelLife 6 months ago
The sound mixing is all a bit lackluster, I think that's the problem more than the singing. It makes some of them sound weak and dull because their mics aren't loud enough.
aquaticstone 6 months ago
I really like the new set style. But I do NOT like the costume changes, especially Angel's costume :(. The vocals are a little dissapointing as well.
thamilton2010 6 months ago
When I first saw this, I was not at all impressed. But remember, the show hasn't even had its official opening yet, so the cast is still feeling things out and getting themselves comfortable. Try not to judge the production just by this video. I saw it live and went into the show with low expectations because of these clips, but it was phenomenal. Every single cast member was incredibly talented. It's impossible to capture all of the magic in a 3 minute video.

They dont seem all too into it in certain parts. The costume change has its positives and negatives. I adore this angel, but mark is.. eh. There singing kinda sucks, i hope there just getting over the flu or something =/
n0daybut0day 6 months ago
The costumes look more like caricatures than what the characters would actually wear. Some of the stuff doesn't even look 90s at all. The Mark's Mom and Others Character just went from edgey to slutty and Maureen has apparently decided to forget about performance art and pursue a career as a pirate. And yes, this Mark seems totally annoying.
GingerSpiceCurry 6 months ago 2
ummm...angle..loving it..but this costume has got to stop!!!
kissrk2 7 months ago

Wealllovechicken 7 months ago
@Wealllovechicken I'm not saying I don't like the production I just don't think Adam is a great Mark. I think they chose him because of his popularity from Next To Normal.
WickedMusicalBuffalo 7 months ago
Well no, I strongly disagree with you, Adam states in an interview that during Next to Normal rehearsals, even before the N2N had even began, Michael Grief said to him that he would make a great Mark, I would like it but YT wont let me. So I don't think for one second that they gave him the role because of his popularity. Can I just ask have you seen this is new rent, because if you havent I don't you think you can say whether you like him or not, from 2:51 worth of clips. @WickedMusicalBuffalo
Wealllovechicken 7 months ago
@Wealllovechicken It's alright that you disagree I just don't think Adam is a great Mark. Move on with your life now please I'm not going to keep replying to your stupid comments.
WickedMusicalBuffalo 6 months ago
No, let me rephrase that for you, 'I don't think Adam is a great Mark, from the 2:51 minutes of clips, but once I've seen the rest of the 2 hours and 28 minutes, I might make another decision! I'm sorry I'm carrying this on, and I know everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I find your claim ridiculous when you havent seen the show and seen only 2:51 minutes. But you still haven't answered my question, have you seen this new rent, because if you have, it's okay @WickedMusicalBuffalo
Wealllovechicken 6 months ago
Saw this production and it was fantastic. A BIG improvement on the original which I was not a fan of. In this smaller space, it is much more heartfelt and moving and the performers are terrific. But please do not base anything on these clips. They are by far the worst moments in the show. Unlike the clips, the show is not annoying and smug. Give it a chance. You will love it.

A few comments...
WWEQAF 7 months ago
@WWEQAF I know what you mean, it can't beat the original (I have seen it & had the EXACT same concerns and excitement) but you actually get really into it when you actually see it. Its a really fresh new take on it & it was amazing to see. Adam doesn't disappoint (Although, it may just be me...but he still has some of the vulnerable "Henryness" about him) & Annaleigh ashford (Who i was a bit skeptic about, love her just wondered what she would be like as maureen) was amazing!!! It is FANTASTIC!!
